Text by George Konstantinou
The Convolvulaceae, commonly known as the bindweed family or morning-glory family, is a family of flowering plants belonging to the order Solanales.
It comprises mainly climbing, twining or creeping herbs, together with erect herbs, subshrubs and shrubs. The family also includes the parasitic plants of the genus Cuscuta, which have a very different form and way of life.
According to the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora, Convolvulaceae is represented in Cyprus by 6 genera and 24 taxa:
- 17 native non-endemic taxa,
- no endemic taxa,
- 4 alien taxa,
- 1 hybrid,
- 2 taxa of uncertain status.
The six genera included in the checklist are Calystegia, Convolvulus, Cressa, Cuscuta, Dichondra and Ipomoea.
Principal morphological characteristics
Most members of the family are annual or perennial herbs with creeping, trailing or twining stems. Some species of Convolvulus are erect herbs or low subshrubs.
The leaves are usually simple and alternate, without stipules. They may be heart-shaped, arrow-shaped, lanceolate, linear, lobed or deeply divided.
The flowers are generally bisexual and radially symmetrical. The corolla consists of five fused petals and has a characteristic funnel-shaped, bell-shaped or wheel-shaped form. Five radiating folds or bands are frequently visible externally.
The flowers may be white, pink, lilac, purple or blue. Many open during the morning and close later in the day.
The fruit is usually a dry capsule containing one to four seeds. The seeds frequently have a hard coat that allows them to remain viable in the soil for long periods.
The parasitic species of Cuscuta
Species of Cuscuta differ greatly from other members of the family. They are obligate parasitic plants with very slender, thread-like, yellowish, orange or reddish stems.
Their leaves are extremely reduced, and they cannot survive independently for long. Young stems coil around a host plant and produce specialized absorbing organs known as haustoria, which penetrate the host’s tissues.
Through these structures, they obtain water and nutrients. They may parasitize wild plants, shrubs and agricultural crops.
Distribution and habitats
Convolvulaceae has a worldwide distribution, with high diversity in tropical and subtropical regions. Several species also extend into temperate areas.
In Cyprus, members of the family occur in:
- cultivated and abandoned fields,
- phrygana and scrublands,
- rocky and stony slopes,
- forest margins and clearings,
- roadsides and path margins,
- hedges and walls,
- moist soils and stream banks,
- salt lakes and coastal saline soils,
- sandy beaches and dunes,
- gardens and urban areas.
Some species are characteristic of dry Mediterranean habitats, while others are associated with moist, coastal or saline sites.

Cuscuta campestris is a parasitic species capable of attacking numerous wild and cultivated plants. The movement of contaminated seed or plant material may contribute to its spread.
The hybrid
1947. Convolvulus ×cyprius Boiss.
Convolvulus ×cyprius is the only hybrid belonging to Convolvulaceae included in the organized checklist.
As a hybrid, it may combine morphological characters of related Convolvulus species. Reliable identification requires examination of the stems, leaves, indumentum, calyx, corolla and fruit fertility.
The × symbol in its scientific name indicates its hybrid origin.
Taxa of uncertain status
Convolvulus
- Convolvulus cantabrica L. · Species
Cuscuta
- Cuscuta epilinum Weihe · Species
The two taxa are included in the uncertain-status category because their presence, origin or population status in Cyprus requires further confirmation.
Adaptations to different habitats
The family includes plants with very different ecological adaptations.
Species of dry habitats may possess:
- narrow or small leaves,
- dense hairs,
- deep root systems,
- woody bases,
- short growing and flowering periods.
Cressa cretica is adapted to saline soils and occurs in coastal wetlands, salt lakes and other places with high salt concentrations.
Ipomoea imperati is associated with sandy coastal habitats. Its creeping stems can spread across the sand and contribute to its stabilization.
Ipomoea sagittata grows mainly in moist, marshy or seasonally flooded habitats.
Identification
Identification is based on a combination of characters:
- creeping, erect or twining growth,
- leaf shape and division,
- presence and type of hairs,
- corolla size and colour,
- form and size of the sepals,
- number of flowers per inflorescence,
- form of the capsule,
- size and surface of the seeds,
- habitat type.
For species of Cuscuta, it is also necessary to examine:
- stem thickness and colour,
- form of the flower clusters,
- shape of the corolla and calyx,
- form of the stigmas,
- manner in which the capsule opens,
- host plants.
Ecological and economic importance
The flowers of many Convolvulaceae provide nectar and pollen for bees, butterflies, moths and other insects.
Creeping coastal species contribute to sand stabilization, while Cressa cretica forms part of the specialized halophytic vegetation of coastal wetlands.
Some Convolvulus species may behave as agricultural weeds. Convolvulus arvensis possesses an extensive underground root system and can regenerate following mechanical disturbance.
Parasitic Cuscuta species can affect the growth of their host plants and may cause problems in agricultural crops.
Other members of the family are economically important. The sweet potato, Ipomoea batatas, belongs to Convolvulaceae, although it is not included in the organized checklist as a plant occurring wild or outside cultivation in Cyprus.
Threats and protection
The principal potential threats to species of natural habitats include:
- destruction of coastal dunes,
- drainage of wetlands,
- changes to natural hydrology,
- residential and tourism development,
- agricultural intensification,
- use of herbicides,
- road construction,
- uncontrolled vehicle movement on beaches,
- spread of alien climbing plants,
- prolonged drought and climate change.
Particular protection is required for sandy coasts, salt lakes and moist habitats supporting specialized members of the family.
