567. Bryonia cretica L.
568. Citrullus colocynthis (L.) Schrad.
569. Ecballium elaterium (L.) A. Rich
1779. Cucumis melo L.

Text by George Konstantinou
The Cucurbitaceae, commonly known as the gourd family or cucumber family, is a family of flowering plants belonging to the order Cucurbitales.
It comprises mainly creeping or climbing herbs with characteristic tendrils. The family includes many familiar cultivated plants, such as cucumbers, melons, watermelons, pumpkins and squashes.
According to the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora, Cucurbitaceae is represented in Cyprus by 4 genera and 4 taxa:
- 3 native non-endemic species,
- no endemic taxa,
- 1 alien species,
- no hybrids,
- no taxa of uncertain status.
The four genera included in the checklist are Bryonia, Citrullus, Cucumis and Ecballium.
Principal morphological characteristics
Most members of the family are annual or perennial herbs with creeping, trailing or climbing stems. Their stems and leaves are frequently rough or covered with stiff hairs.
The leaves are alternate, simple and generally heart-shaped or palmately lobed. Stipules are absent.
A characteristic feature of the family is the presence of tendrils, which allow many species to attach themselves to neighbouring plants or other supports. The tendrils may be simple or branched.
The flowers are generally unisexual, meaning that each flower is either male or female. Male and female flowers may occur on the same plant or on separate plants.
The corolla generally consists of five fused petals and may be white, yellowish or yellowish-green. The ovary of the female flower is inferior and located below the other floral parts.
The fruit is generally a fleshy berry with a firmer outer rind, botanically known as a pepo. In some genera, however, the fruit has a specialized mechanism for opening and dispersing its seeds.
Distribution and habitats
Cucurbitaceae has a worldwide distribution, with particularly high diversity in tropical and subtropical regions.
In Cyprus, its members occur in different habitat types:
- scrublands and hedges,
- field and road margins,
- abandoned cultivated land,
- dry and stony slopes,
- sandy coastal sites,
- stream and torrent beds,
- areas around settlements,
- gardens and cultivated places,
- soil heaps and other disturbed sites.
The native species have different ecological requirements. Bryonia cretica is a climbing geophyte, Citrullus colocynthis spreads across dry and sandy soils, and Ecballium elaterium frequently occurs in disturbed and nutrient-rich places.
Native non-endemic species
567. Bryonia cretica L.
Bryonia cretica is a native non-endemic species of Cyprus, commonly known in English as Cretan bryony. It is a perennial climbing geophyte with a large underground root.
Its stems develop seasonally and climb over shrubs, hedges and other vegetation with the aid of tendrils.
The leaves are alternate, broad and palmately lobed. The flowers are small and greenish to yellowish-green.
The fruits are almost spherical berries that become bright red at maturity. The plant, and particularly its fruits, should not be regarded as edible.
In Cyprus, it occurs from sea level to approximately 300 metres. It grows in scrublands, hedges, field margins, ravines and other places where it can climb over surrounding vegetation.
It flowers mainly from February to April.
568. Citrullus colocynthis (L.) Schrad.
Citrullus colocynthis is a native non-endemic species, commonly known in English as colocynth or bitter apple.
It is a perennial herb with long creeping stems that spread across the ground. Its leaves are deeply lobed, rough and frequently greyish-green.
The flowers are yellow and unisexual. The fruits are almost spherical, green with pale stripes when young and yellowish at maturity. They resemble small watermelons, but their flesh is extremely bitter.
It should not be confused with cultivated watermelon or collected for consumption.
In Cyprus, it is recorded from sea level to approximately 150 metres. It occurs mainly in dry, sandy, gravelly or stony places, on roadsides and open plains.
It flowers mainly from May to July.
569. Ecballium elaterium (L.) A. Rich
Ecballium elaterium is a native non-endemic species, commonly known in English as squirting cucumber.
It is a perennial geophyte with thick, fleshy and generally spreading stems. Unlike many other members of the family, it lacks tendrils and does not climb.
Its leaves are broad, heart-shaped to triangular, with wavy or toothed margins and a rough surface. The flowers are yellowish and unisexual.
The fruit is elongated, green and covered with stiff hairs. When mature, it suddenly detaches from its stalk and ejects fluid and seeds under pressure. This characteristic mechanism disperses the seeds away from the parent plant.
Mature fruits should not be squeezed or directed towards the face and eyes. The plant is not suitable for consumption.
In Cyprus, it is recorded from sea level to approximately 875 metres. It occurs on roadsides, waste ground, fields, rubble deposits and other disturbed sites.
Endemic taxa
No endemic taxon belonging to Cucurbitaceae is included in the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora.
The alien species
1779. Cucumis melo L.
Cucumis melo is the cultivated melon, commonly known in English as melon or muskmelon.
It is an annual herb with creeping or climbing stems, tendrils and broad, shallowly or more deeply lobed leaves. The flowers are yellow, and the fruits vary greatly in size, shape, colour, surface and taste.
It is classified among the alien taxa in the organized checklist. Flora of Cyprus records it as a casual, meaning that it may occur outside cultivation without having been shown to form stable, self-sustaining populations.
Occurrences outside cultivation may originate from discarded fruits or seeds, crop remains and the movement of agricultural material.
Its flowering outside cultivation in Cyprus has been recorded in July.
Hybrids
No hybrid belonging to Cucurbitaceae is included in the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora.
Taxa of uncertain status
No taxon of uncertain status belonging to Cucurbitaceae is included in the organized checklist.
Seed dispersal
The four taxa display different methods of seed dispersal:
- The red fruits of Bryonia cretica may attract animals that contribute to seed movement.
- The fruits of Citrullus colocynthis frequently remain on the ground for long periods, and their seeds are released as the fruit breaks down.
- Ecballium elaterium actively ejects its seeds together with fluid from the mature fruit.
- Cucumis melo is dispersed mainly through human cultivation and the movement of fruits and seeds.
The explosive mechanism of Ecballium elaterium is one of the most characteristic forms of active seed dispersal in the Cypriot flora.
Identification of the species
The four species can generally be distinguished as follows:
- Bryonia cretica is a climbing geophyte with tendrils and red mature fruits.
- Citrullus colocynthis has long creeping stems, deeply lobed leaves and spherical fruits resembling small watermelons.
- Ecballium elaterium lacks tendrils and produces elongated, hairy fruits that eject their seeds.
- Cucumis melo has creeping or climbing stems with tendrils and displays great diversity among its cultivated forms.
Reliable identification should consider the tendrils, leaves, indumentum, flowers, fruit form and the manner in which the fruit matures or opens.
Ecological and economic importance
The flowers of Cucurbitaceae provide nectar and pollen for bees and other insects. Insect pollination is particularly important for fruit production.
The creeping stems of Citrullus colocynthis may provide cover over bare sandy or gravelly soils.
Cucumis melo is economically important as a cultivated food plant. Many other important crops, including cucumber, watermelon and pumpkins, also belong to the family but are not included in the organized checklist as taxa occurring wild or outside cultivation in Cyprus.
Caution regarding consumption and handling
Being related to familiar edible crops does not mean that all wild Cucurbitaceae are safe to eat.
Bryonia cretica, Citrullus colocynthis and Ecballium elaterium should not be consumed or used in homemade medicinal preparations.
Mature fruits of Ecballium elaterium may eject their contents suddenly. Squeezing or handling them near the eyes and face should be avoided.
Threats and protection
Possible local threats include:
- destruction of coastal and sandy habitats,
- residential and tourism development,
- agricultural intensification,
- use of herbicides,
- removal of hedges and field margins,
- road construction,
- uncontrolled vehicle movement,
- waste disposal,
- prolonged drought.
Conserving natural hedges, dry open land and sandy coastal habitats contributes to the protection of the native species.
