Arbutus
Erica
625. Erica manipuliflora Salisb.
626. Erica sicula subsp. libanotica (Barb.-Boiss.

Hypopitys
Arbutus
Arbutus andrachne L. × Arbutus unedo L.
Το Plants of the World Online το αναγνωρίζει ως αποδεκτό φυσικό υβρίδιο της ανατολικής Μεσογείου, με φυσική παρουσία στην Κύπρο και την Τουρκία.
Erica sicula subsp. libanotica (Barb.-Boiss. & Barbey) P. F. Stevens
Στη σύγχρονη ταξινομική μεταχείριση του Plants of the World Online, το όνομα αυτό θεωρείται συνώνυμο του Erica sicula subsp. sicula.
Hypopitys monotropa Crantz
Το Plants of the World Online τη θεωρεί συνώνυμο του αποδεκτού ονόματος Monotropa hypopitys L. Και σε αυτή την περίπτωση διατηρείται η ονομασία που χρησιμοποιείται στον οργανωμένο κατάλογο της κυπριακής χλωρίδας.

Text by George Konstantinou
The family Ericaceae, commonly known as the heath family, is a large and diverse family of angiosperms belonging to the order Ericales. It includes mainly shrubs and small trees, as well as some herbaceous mycoheterotrophic plants without chlorophyll.
Many members of the family are adapted to acidic, nutrient-poor soils. Their roots frequently form specialized mycorrhizal associations with fungi, which facilitate the absorption of nutrients.
According to the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora, the family Ericaceae is represented in Cyprus by 3 genera and 6 taxa:
- Arbutus – 2 species and 1 hybrid
- Erica – 1 species and 1 subspecies
- Hypopitys – 1 species
Of the six taxa, five are indigenous and non-endemic, while one is a natural hybrid.
Morphology
Most members of the family Ericaceae are evergreen or deciduous shrubs and small trees. Their leaves are generally simple, without stipules, and may be alternate, opposite or arranged in whorls.
In the genus Arbutus, the leaves are leathery and relatively broad. In Erica, they are very small and narrow, frequently with downward-rolled margins, a feature that reduces water loss.
The flowers are generally bisexual and radially symmetrical. The corolla frequently consists of fused petals and may be cup-shaped, bell-shaped or urn-shaped. The anthers usually open through small pores at their tips.
The fruit may be a berry, drupe or capsule. In the strawberry trees of the genus Arbutus, it is fleshy and provides an important food source for many wild animals.
Hypopitys monotropa differs strikingly from the woody members of the family. It is a herbaceous plant without chlorophyll, with pale yellowish or brownish stems and scale-like leaves.
Distribution and habitats
The family Ericaceae has an almost worldwide distribution, with particularly high diversity in temperate regions, mountain ecosystems and areas with acidic soils.
In Cyprus, its members occur in:
- pine and mixed forests,
- shrublands and maquis vegetation,
- rocky limestone slopes,
- mountainous and submontane areas,
- cool, shaded woodland habitats,
- areas with igneous or other suitable soils.
Arbutus andrachne, Arbutus unedo and Erica manipuliflora are components of Mediterranean woodland and shrub vegetation. Erica sicula subsp. libanotica and Hypopitys monotropa have a much more restricted occurrence in Cyprus.
Indigenous non-endemic taxa
Arbutus
623. Arbutus andrachne L. · Species · Indigenous, non-endemic
An evergreen shrub or small tree characteristic of the eastern Mediterranean. It is distinguished by its smooth bark, which peels away in thin plates to reveal a striking reddish, orange-red or cinnamon-coloured surface.
The leaves are leathery, glossy and usually have an almost entire or finely toothed margin. The flowers are white or pinkish, urn-shaped and borne in upright or slightly hanging clusters.
The fruits are spherical and fleshy, becoming orange to red as they mature. It grows on rocky slopes, in pine forests, shrublands and other habitats with Mediterranean vegetation.
624. Arbutus unedo L. · Species · Indigenous, non-endemic
An evergreen shrub or small tree known in English as the strawberry tree. Its leaves are leathery and glossy, with distinctly serrated margins.
The flowers are white or pinkish, urn-shaped and borne in hanging clusters. The spherical fruits have a granular surface and mature from yellow to orange and finally red. Because they require many months to ripen, flowers and mature fruits may be present on the same plant at the same time.
It is very rare and has a restricted distribution in Cyprus. In the Red Data Book of the Flora of Cyprus, it is classified as Critically Endangered (CR).
Erica
625. Erica manipuliflora Salisb. · Species · Indigenous, non-endemic
An evergreen, much-branched shrub with small, narrow leaves and numerous pink to purplish-pink flowers. The flowers form dense, elongated inflorescences near the tips of the stems.
It occurs mainly in dry shrublands, open stony habitats and pine forests. Its autumn flowering provides nectar and pollen for insects during a season when relatively few other Mediterranean plants are in full bloom.
It has a very restricted occurrence in Cyprus and is recorded at elevations of approximately 100–175 metres. In the Red Data Book of the Flora of Cyprus, it is classified as Vulnerable (VU) under criterion D2.
626. Erica sicula subsp. libanotica (Barb.-Boiss. & Barbey) P. F. Stevens · Subspecies · Indigenous, non-endemic
A small to medium-sized evergreen shrub with slender woody stems, small narrow leaves and pink flowers. It grows mainly in rocky, frequently limestone habitats.
It has a disjunct and highly restricted geographical distribution in the eastern Mediterranean. In Cyprus it is local and rare, making its populations vulnerable to wildfires, development and alteration of its rocky habitats.
Hypopitys
627. Hypopitys monotropa Crantz · Species · Indigenous, non-endemic
A perennial mycoheterotrophic plant without chlorophyll. It does not photosynthesize and appears above ground only when it produces its fleshy, pale yellow to brown flowering stems.
Its leaves are reduced to fleshy scales. The flowers are borne in terminal inflorescences, which initially curve downwards and gradually become upright during development and fruiting.
The plant obtains carbon and nutrients through a specialized relationship with mycorrhizal fungi, which are also connected to the roots of forest trees. It does not, therefore, directly parasitize the trees but depends on the underground fungal network and the integrity of the forest ecosystem.
It is extremely rare in Cyprus and is recorded in cool, shaded woodland habitats. In the Red Data Book of the Flora of Cyprus, it is classified as Critically Endangered (CR) under criteria C2a(i) and D1.
Hybrids
Arbutus
1948. Arbutus ×andrachnoides Link · Hybrid · Natural hybrid
A natural hybrid between:
Arbutus andrachne L. × Arbutus unedo L.
It displays morphological characteristics intermediate between those of its two parent species. Its bark may be smooth and reddish on some sections, as in Arbutus andrachne, but rougher or less strongly exfoliating on others.
Its leaves usually show an intermediate degree of serration, while its flowers and fruits combine characteristics of both parents. The hybrid may arise where the two species grow in close proximity.
Plants of the World Online recognizes it as an accepted natural hybrid of the eastern Mediterranean, native to Cyprus and Türkiye.
Taxonomic notes
The organized checklist of the Cypriot flora uses the name:
Erica sicula subsp. libanotica (Barb.-Boiss. & Barbey) P. F. Stevens
In the current taxonomic treatment followed by Plants of the World Online, this name is regarded as a synonym of Erica sicula subsp. sicula. The name used in the Cypriot checklist is retained in this article.
Similarly, the checklist uses the name:
Hypopitys monotropa Crantz
Plants of the World Online regards it as a synonym of the accepted name Monotropa hypopitys L. Once again, the name used in the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora is retained here.
Endemic, alien and uncertain-status taxa
The organized checklist of the Cypriot flora records no:
- endemic taxa of Cyprus,
- alien or naturalized taxa,
- taxa of uncertain status
within the family Ericaceae.
It does, however, include one natural hybrid: Arbutus ×andrachnoides.
Ecology
Strawberry trees are important components of Mediterranean woodland and shrub vegetation. Their flowers provide nectar and pollen for insects, while their fleshy fruits are eaten by birds and mammals, which contribute to seed dispersal.
Species of Erica provide food for pollinators, while their dense shrubs offer cover for small animals. The autumn flowering of Erica manipuliflora is particularly important for insects during the dry Mediterranean season.
Hypopitys monotropa is a characteristic example of the close ecological interdependence between plants, fungi and forest trees. Its survival depends on the preservation of the underground mycorrhizal network and the particular conditions of the forest soil.
Threats and protection
The main potential threats to the rare members of the family in Cyprus include:
- wildfires,
- clearance of natural vegetation,
- residential and tourism development,
- road construction and earthworks,
- quarrying activities,
- alteration of rocky habitats,
- degradation and drying of forest soils,
- collection of rare plants,
- prolonged drought and climate change.
Particular priority should be given to protecting the known populations of Arbutus unedo, Erica manipuliflora, Erica sicula subsp. libanotica and Hypopitys monotropa.
Protection of Hypopitys monotropa requires conservation of its entire woodland microhabitat, rather than only its visible flowering stems.
