Melia

Melia azedarach L.

The family Meliaceae, known as the mahogany family, is a family of flowering plants belonging to the order Sapindales. It includes 58 accepted genera and approximately 700 species, distributed mainly throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of the world.

The family includes important forest and ornamental trees, such as the mahoganies of the genera Swietenia and Khaya, the neem tree Azadirachta indica, species of the genus Cedrela and the widely cultivated Melia azedarach.

According to the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora, the family Meliaceae is represented in Cyprus by 1 genus and 1 taxon. It is the alien and naturalized species Melia azedarach L.

General characteristics

The members of the family are mainly evergreen or deciduous trees and shrubs. Their leaves are usually arranged alternately and are generally pinnate or bipinnate, without stipules.

The flowers are usually small, radially symmetrical and arranged in many-flowered inflorescences. They may be bisexual or unisexual. A characteristic feature of many species is the stamens, whose filaments are united to form a conspicuous tube around the pistil.

The fruit may be a capsule, drupe or berry. The seeds of certain species possess wings and are dispersed by wind, while the fleshy fruits of other species are eaten and transported by animals.

Many members of the family produce bioactive chemical substances that may possess insect-repellent, insecticidal, medicinal or toxic properties.

The family Meliaceae in Cyprus

The only species of the family included in the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora is Melia azedarach L. It is a tree of Asian and Australian origin that has been widely planted in many countries as an ornamental and shade tree.

In Cyprus, it is cultivated in gardens, courtyards, parks, squares and along roads. It has also escaped from cultivation and may occur self-sown in disturbed habitats.

The species is classified in Cyprus as Naturalized non-invasive (NN).

Alien and naturalized taxa

Melia

  1. Melia azedarach L. – Species – Naturalized non-invasive (NN)

Total: 1 genus and 1 taxon.

Melia azedarach L.

Melia azedarach, known in English as chinaberry tree, bead-tree, Persian lilac, pride of India or white cedar, is a deciduous tree with a native distribution extending from tropical and subtropical Asia to northern and eastern Australia.

It usually reaches a height of 7–15 metres and forms a broad, rounded crown. The trunk has greyish-brown bark, which develops cracks and furrows in older trees.

Leaves

The leaves are large, compound, bipinnate and sometimes tripinnate. They may reach approximately 40 centimetres in length. The leaflets are ovate to lanceolate, with an acute apex and a toothed or serrated margin.

The foliage creates dense shade during the warm period of the year. The tree is deciduous and loses its leaves during winter.

Flowers

The flowers are small, fragrant and arranged in large, loose, many-flowered inflorescences. The five petals are pale purple, lilac or almost white.

A conspicuous dark-purple staminal tube occurs at the centre of the flower. The flowers attract bees and other pollinating insects. In Cyprus, flowering is recorded mainly from April to May.

Fruits and seeds

The fruit is an almost spherical or slightly ellipsoid drupe. It is initially green and becomes yellowish to yellowish-brown when mature.

The fruits often remain on the bare branches for much of the winter, after the leaves have fallen. The hard endocarp contains the seeds and possesses characteristic longitudinal grooves.

The fruits and seeds contain toxic substances. Their consumption may be dangerous to humans and certain domestic or livestock animals. They must not be used as food.

Habitats in Cyprus

Melia azedarach may be encountered in:

  • gardens, courtyards and parks,
  • squares and urban areas,
  • along roads,
  • abandoned cultivated land,
  • old properties and ruined settlements,
  • field boundaries,
  • margins of watercourses,
  • piles of soil and other disturbed ground.

The species tolerates drought, high temperatures and a variety of soils. It grows best in deep, well-drained soils with sufficient moisture and sunlight.

Reproduction and dispersal

The species reproduces mainly by seeds. Its flowers are pollinated by insects, while the fruits may be eaten by certain birds, which contribute to the transport and dispersal of the seeds.

The fruits are also transported by water, soil and human activities. Young plants may appear beneath cultivated trees, along roads, around old properties and in other disturbed sites.

The tree may also resprout from its base or roots following cutting or injury.

Ecological role

The dense crown provides shade and resting or nesting sites for birds. The flowers are a source of nectar and pollen for bees and other insects.

The mature fruits are eaten by certain bird species despite their toxicity to many mammals. Older trees may provide cavities, cracks and other microhabitats for invertebrates, birds and small vertebrates.

However, in areas where it spreads extensively, it may compete with local vegetation and form dense stands, particularly in disturbed or riparian habitats.

Uses

Melia azedarach is planted as an ornamental and shade tree because of its rapid growth, broad crown, fragrant lilac flowers and decorative yellow fruits.

Its wood is used locally in furniture-making, construction, woodcarving and as fuel. The hard endocarps have traditionally been used as beads for making necklaces and other objects.

Extracts from different parts of the plant have traditionally been used as insect repellents or insecticides. Such uses require particular caution because of the plant’s toxicity.

Toxicity

The fruits are the most dangerous part of the plant, particularly when consumed in quantity. They contain bioactive compounds that may cause digestive, neurological and other serious disorders.

Children and domestic animals should not have access to fallen fruits. The presence of fruits in courtyards, schools, playgrounds or areas where animals graze requires attention.

The mention of traditional medicinal uses does not mean that the plant is safe for self-treatment or internal use.

Monitoring and management

Although the species is classified in Cyprus as naturalized non-invasive, monitoring its spread near natural ecosystems and watercourses is useful.

Young self-sown plants may be removed before they develop a large root system when they occur in ecologically sensitive areas. Simple cutting may cause resprouting, so the base and root suckers need to be checked.

In urban areas, the fall of the fruits, their toxicity and the possibility of branch breakage during strong winds should be taken into consideration.
