Text by George Konstantinou
The family Potamogetonaceae, commonly known as the pondweed family, is a family of aquatic flowering plants belonging to the order Alismatales. It comprises 5 accepted genera and approximately 110–120 species worldwide.
The members of the family are fully submerged or partly floating plants of fresh and brackish waters. They occur throughout almost the entire world and form an important component of the vegetation of lakes, rivers, streams, channels, reservoirs, seasonal wetlands and coastal lagoons.
According to the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora, Potamogetonaceae is represented in Cyprus by 3 genera and 8 taxa. Of these, 6 are native non-endemic and 2 are alien and naturalized.
Morphological characteristics
The members of the family are annual or perennial aquatic herbs. They may possess creeping rhizomes growing within the sediment or slender stems anchored to the bottom by roots.
The stems are generally flexible and adapted to water movement. They may be simple or highly branched and can form dense underwater stands.
The leaves display great morphological diversity. They may be completely submerged, floating or of both types on the same plant. Submerged leaves are frequently thin, linear or membranous, while floating leaves are generally broader and more leathery.
In many species of Potamogeton, conspicuous stipules are present at the bases of the leaves. The form of the leaves, stipules, stems and inflorescences is important for species identification.
The flowers are small, inconspicuous and generally grouped into spikes. They may develop above the water surface or remain submerged. Pollination takes place by wind, at the water surface or underwater, depending on the genus and species.
The fruits are small, one-seeded and generally form dense groups. They can float or be transported by water, birds and other animals.
Distribution and habitats in Cyprus
In Cyprus, species of the family occur in natural and artificial wetlands. They grow in rivers, streams, springs, small lakes, seasonal pools, dams, reservoirs, irrigation channels and lagoons.
Some species prefer fresh water, while others tolerate brackish or saline conditions. Their presence depends on the duration of flooding, depth, clarity, salinity, current speed and composition of the bottom.
Species of Potamogeton occur mainly in fresh waters with a permanent or relatively prolonged presence of water. Althenia and Zannichellia can grow in shallow, seasonal, brackish or saline waters.
During periods of high water levels, they can form extensive underwater stands. When seasonal wetlands dry out, annual plants survive as seeds, while perennial species may survive through rhizomes or other underground structures.

Genera of Cyprus
Althenia
The genus Althenia includes slender, fully submerged plants generally growing in shallow brackish or saline waters. The leaves are extremely narrow and thread-like, and the flowers are exceptionally small.
Althenia filiformis can complete its biological cycle rapidly in seasonal wetlands before they dry out completely.
Potamogeton
Potamogeton is the largest genus of the family. It includes plants with submerged or floating leaves that may range from extremely thin and linear to broad and elliptical.
The species display great morphological variability according to water depth, flow, clarity and chemical composition.
Zannichellia
The genus Zannichellia includes slender, submerged plants with narrow linear leaves. The flowers are small and unisexual and develop in the leaf axils.
The species and subspecies occur in fresh, brackish or slightly saline waters and can complete their life cycle within a relatively short period.
Native taxa
Althenia filiformis F. Petit
Althenia filiformis is a small, slender and fully submerged aquatic plant. It has thread-like leaves and inconspicuous flowers and grows mainly in shallow, seasonal and frequently brackish or saline waters.
Because of its small size and seasonal occurrence, it can easily be overlooked. Reliable identification frequently requires examination of the flowers and fruits.
Potamogeton nodosus Poir.
Potamogeton nodosus is a rhizomatous aquatic plant with submerged and floating leaves. The floating leaves are generally broad, elliptical to lanceolate and borne on long stalks.
The flower spikes rise above the water surface. The species can grow in rivers, channels, lakes and other fresh waters.
Potamogeton pectinatus L.
Potamogeton pectinatus is a fully submerged plant with long, extremely narrow and thread-like leaves. It forms dense underwater stands and tolerates a wide range of salinity.
It grows in fresh or brackish waters, lakes, lagoons, channels and other standing or slowly flowing waters.
Potamogeton pusillus L.
Potamogeton pusillus is a slender, fully submerged plant with narrow linear leaves. The stems are thin and highly branched and may form loose or dense stands.
Its identification can be difficult because of its similarity to other fine-leaved species of the genus.
Zannichellia palustris L. subsp. palustris
The subspecies has slender stems and narrow, linear leaves. It grows submerged in shallow fresh or slightly brackish waters.
The small, generally curved fruits form groups in the leaf axils and provide an important characteristic for its identification.
Zannichellia palustris subsp. pedicellata (Wahlenb. & E. Rosén) Hegi
The subspecies is morphologically similar to the typical subspecies but is distinguished by details of the fruits and their stalks.
It may occur in shallow, seasonal, fresh or brackish waters, and its identification requires mature fruiting material.
Alien taxa
Potamogeton coloratus Hornem.
Potamogeton coloratus is an aquatic plant with thin, translucent, submerged or floating leaves. It is associated mainly with clear, shallow waters, springs, channels and wetland habitats.
According to our organized checklist, it is classified in Cyprus as an alien and naturalized species.
Potamogeton perfoliatus L.
Potamogeton perfoliatus is a fully submerged perennial plant. The leaves are broad, without an obvious stalk and partly surround the stem at their base.
It grows in lakes, rivers, channels and other permanent waters. In Cyprus it is classified in our checklist as an alien and naturalized species.
Reproduction and dispersal
Species of the family reproduce through seeds and vegetative means. Rhizomes, stolons, tubers and stem fragments allow many species to survive and expand.
The small flowers are pollinated by wind or water. In some species the inflorescences rise above the surface, while in others reproduction takes place entirely underwater.
The fruits and seeds are transported by water flow, floods and waterbirds. They may attach to the feet or feathers of birds or be transported through their digestive systems.
Plant fragments may also be transported between wetlands on fishing equipment, boats, cleaning machinery and through the movement of water or mud.
Ecological importance
Underwater stands provide shelter and breeding sites for aquatic invertebrates, young fish, amphibians and other small organisms.
The leaves and stems provide surfaces on which algae, bacteria and other microorganisms grow. These organisms are eaten by snails, insects, crustaceans and fish.
The fruits, seeds, leaves and underground structures are consumed by waterbirds. Some ducks and other birds depend seasonally on abundant aquatic vegetation.
The plants reduce water velocity, trap suspended particles and help stabilize sediments. Through photosynthesis, they produce oxygen and contribute to the quality of the aquatic environment.
Indicators of wetland condition
The composition of aquatic vegetation can provide important information about the ecological condition of a wetland.
Some species tolerate salinity, turbidity or increased nutrient concentrations. Others require clearer water and more light.
The sudden disappearance of submerged plants may indicate increased turbidity, eutrophication, pollution, changes in salinity or severe changes in water level.
Assessment must be based on repeated observations because seasonal species may appear for only a short period each year.
Threats
The most important threat is the loss or alteration of wetlands. Drainage, excessive water abstraction, water diversion and sudden changes in water level can destroy entire stands.
Pollution and excessive fertilizer input cause eutrophication. Intense phytoplankton growth reduces clarity and limits the light reaching submerged leaves.
The disposal of soil, dredging, mechanical vegetation removal and channel cleaning can destroy plants, rhizomes and the seed bank of the bottom.
Prolonged droughts and rising temperatures resulting from climate change can reduce the flooding period of seasonal wetlands.
Alien aquatic plants, fish and other organisms may also alter water clarity, increase disturbance of the bottom or compete with local vegetation.
Protection and management
Protecting the family requires the conservation of the natural hydrology of rivers, springs, seasonal lakes and other wetlands.
Waste disposal, excessive fertilizer use near wetlands and unjustified mechanical removal of aquatic vegetation should be avoided.
Cleaning work in channels or reservoirs should be carried out in sections and during an appropriate season, leaving unaffected areas from which the vegetation can become re-established.
Monitoring should include water level, salinity, clarity and quality, as well as accurate species recording.
For alien taxa, monitoring their spread and preventing the accidental transfer of plant fragments to new wetlands are important.
