Adiantum capillus-veneris
Anogramma leptophylla
Cheilanthes acrostica
Cheilanthes maderensis
Cosentinia vellea
Notholaena marantae
Pteris vittata

Text by George Konstantinou
The family Pteridaceae is one of the largest and most diverse families of ferns. It belongs to the order Polypodiales and includes small to large terrestrial, lithophytic or, more rarely, aquatic ferns.
According to the PPG I classification, the family includes approximately 53 genera and more than 1,200 species worldwide, distributed throughout tropical, subtropical and temperate regions. It is particularly diverse in dry and semi-arid regions, where many species have developed specialized adaptations for coping with limited moisture.
According to the organized checklist of the flora of Cyprus, the family Pteridaceae is represented in Cyprus by 6 genera and 7 taxa. All seven are native non-endemic species. No endemic, alien, hybrid or uncertain-status taxa of the family are recorded in Cyprus.
General characteristics
The members of Pteridaceae are perennial or, more rarely, annual seedless vascular plants. They do not produce flowers, fruits or seeds but reproduce by spores.
The rhizome may be short or long, creeping, ascending or erect and is usually covered with hairs or scales. Roots and leaves arise from the rhizome. In ferns, the leaves are also known as fronds.
The young fronds are usually coiled inwards and gradually unfold as they develop. The lamina may be simple, pinnate or repeatedly divided. Its texture varies from thin and delicate to leathery or densely hairy.
The sporangia are formed on the lower surface or along the margins of the fertile leaves. In many species of the family, they are grouped into elongated or linear clusters. The folded margin of the leaf may form a false indusium that protects the developing sporangia.
Reproductive cycle
Like all ferns, the members of Pteridaceae display an alternation of generations. The visible plant is the sporophyte, which produces spores inside the sporangia.
When the spores mature, they are released and dispersed mainly by the wind. If they reach a suitable moist substrate, they germinate and form a small, usually green and heart-shaped gametophyte known as a prothallus.
The male and female reproductive organs develop on the prothallus. Water is necessary for the male reproductive cells to move towards the egg. Following fertilization, a new sporophyte develops and gradually becomes independent.
The family Pteridaceae in Cyprus
In Cyprus, the species of the family display significant ecological differences. Some depend on permanently moist and shaded places, while others are adapted to dry, hot and strongly exposed rocky surfaces.
Adiantum capillus-veneris is associated with springs, well walls, wet rocks, streams and other places where water continuously seeps or flows.
In contrast, species such as Cheilanthes acrostica, Cheilanthes maderensis, Cosentinia vellea and Notholaena marantae occur mainly on rocky slopes, in rock crevices, on dry-stone walls and in stony soils, where they can withstand long periods of drought.

Ecology of the Cypriot species
Adiantum capillus-veneris
It is a perennial fern with characteristic slender, glossy, black or dark brown stalks and delicate, usually wedge-shaped pinnules. It requires permanent or nearly permanent moisture and grows around shaded springs, on wet limestone rocks, in caves, on well walls, along water channels and on stream banks.
Anogramma leptophylla
It is a small, delicate and usually annual fern. Its short life cycle is completed during the wet period of the year, before the intense summer drought. It occurs on shaded or semi-shaded rocks, in moist crevices, on banks and in thin layers of soil over rocky substrates.
Cheilanthes acrostica
It is a small fern of dry and warm rocky habitats. Its fronds are divided and possess characteristic adaptations that limit water loss. It occurs mainly in rock crevices, on stony slopes and on old dry-stone walls.
Cheilanthes maderensis
It also grows in dry rocky places and crevices, often in warm and exposed habitats. During prolonged periods of drought, its fronds may contract or dry superficially, thereby reducing moisture loss.
Cosentinia vellea
It is a characteristic fern of dry Mediterranean rocky habitats. Its fronds are covered with dense, pale-coloured hairs that reflect part of the solar radiation and limit water loss. It occurs on sunny rocky slopes, in crevices and on dry-stone walls.
Notholaena marantae
It is a drought-resistant fern of stony and rocky places. The lower surface of the leaves may be covered by a protective layer of powdery or waxy material that helps reduce water loss and protect the sporangia.
Pteris vittata
It is a perennial fern with long, pinnate fronds. It occurs on rocks, old walls, wells, banks and other places with some available moisture. It may also appear in human-made habitats, particularly on old stonework and near buildings.
Adaptations to drought
Several Cypriot members of the family are adapted to the difficult conditions of the Mediterranean climate. Their principal adaptations include:
- small and deeply divided fronds,
- dense hairs or scales on the leaf surface,
- folding or contraction of the leaves during drought,
- protective powdery or waxy secretions,
- growth inside deep rock crevices,
- and a seasonal growth cycle coinciding with the rainy periods.
These ferns may enter a state of severe dehydration during the summer. Following the first rains, some rehydrate and restore the function of their leaves, while others produce new fronds from their protected rhizomes.
Ecological importance
The ferns of the family Pteridaceae participate in the plant communities of rocky, shaded and moist microhabitats. Their roots and rhizomes retain small quantities of soil inside crevices and contribute to the gradual formation of organic matter.
Species that depend on springs and other moist places can serve as indicators of stable local moisture. The drought-adapted species form an important part of the specialized flora of rocky habitats.
Uses and importance to humans
Adiantum capillus-veneris is cultivated as an ornamental plant and has been used in traditional herbal medicine in various regions. Ornamental or traditional use does not mean that wild plants should be collected from their natural populations.
Some species of the genus Pteris have been studied for their ability to accumulate arsenic in their tissues. This characteristic has generated scientific interest in the possible use of certain species for the phytoremediation of contaminated soils. However, the presence of a fern in an area is not in itself evidence of contamination.
Threats and protection
The most important potential threats to the Cypriot members of the family are:
- the destruction or alteration of rocky habitats,
- quarrying and excavation,
- the demolition or cleaning of old stone walls,
- the drying of springs and moist walls,
- water abstraction or diversion,
- the pollution of springs, streams and wells,
- vegetation-clearing operations involving herbicides,
- fires,
- prolonged drought,
- and the reduction of available moisture due to climate change.
Particular attention is required for small populations growing at isolated springs, wells, caves or specialized rocky sites. A small-scale intervention may destroy their entire local microhabitat.
