Το Angiosperm Phylogeny Website αναφέρει περίπου 62 γένη και 2.525 είδη, ενώ το Plants of the World Online των Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew αναγνωρίζει σήμερα 49 αποδεκτά γένη.

The family Ranunculaceae, known as the buttercup family, is a large family of flowering plants belonging to the order Ranunculales. It has an almost worldwide distribution but displays its greatest diversity in the temperate and cold regions of the Northern Hemisphere.

Estimates of the worldwide size of the family differ according to the taxonomic approach. The Angiosperm Phylogeny Website reports approximately 62 genera and 2,525 species, while Plants of the World Online of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew currently recognizes 49 accepted genera.

According to the organized checklist of the flora of Cyprus, the family Ranunculaceae is represented in Cyprus by 11 genera and 49 taxa: 38 native non-endemic taxa, 4 endemic taxa of Cyprus, 4 alien or naturalized taxa and 3 taxa of uncertain status.

General characteristics

The members of the family are mainly annual or perennial herbs. Some species are climbing plants, such as members of the genus Clematis. The roots may be fibrous, tuberous or swollen and, in several species, function as storage organs.

The leaves are usually alternate, simple or compound and often deeply lobed or dissected. The flowers may be solitary or arranged in inflorescences. They are usually bisexual and actinomorphic, but in genera such as Delphinium and Consolida they are zygomorphic.

The sepals, petals, stamens and carpels are usually free. The stamens are often numerous and spirally arranged. The carpels may also be numerous and free from one another.

The fruit may consist of achenes, as in the genera Ranunculus, Adonis, Anemone and Clematis, or follicles, as in Nigella, Delphinium, Consolida and Staphisagria.

The family Ranunculaceae in Cyprus

In Cyprus, the family displays significant diversity and includes plants with different life cycles and ecological requirements. Its species occur from the coastal zone to the highest summits of the Troodos Mountains.

Many taxa are annual plants of cultivated fields, grasslands, fallow land and open phryganic habitats. Others grow in forests, scrub, rocky slopes, mountain grasslands, seasonally wet soils, streams, small ponds and water reservoirs.

The largest genus of the family in Cyprus is Ranunculus, with 24 taxa. It is followed by Nigella with 7 taxa, Adonis and Delphinium with 4 taxa each, and Anemone, Clematis and Consolida with 3 taxa each.

Endemic taxa of Cyprus

Delphinium caseyi is a rare endemic species of Cyprus. It is a plant with a restricted distribution, associated with specialized rocky habitats. Its small and localized populations make it particularly vulnerable to changes in its habitat.

Ranunculus cadmicus subsp. cyprius is an endemic subspecies of the Cypriot mountain flora. It occurs in mountain habitats characterized by lower temperatures and greater seasonal moisture.

Ranunculus kykkoensis is an endemic species of Cyprus, known from a limited number of localities. Its conservation depends on the protection of the natural microhabitats in which it grows.

Ranunculus millefoliatus subsp. leptaleus is also an endemic subspecies of Cyprus. It forms a characteristic element of the island’s distinctive floristic differentiation.

Ecology and habitats

Species of the genera Adonis, Nigella, Consolida and Delphinium occur mainly in open places, cultivated fields, grasslands, fallow land, stony soils and phryganic habitats. Many are annuals and complete their life cycle during the rainy period and spring.

Anemone coronaria is one of the most characteristic wildflowers of the Cypriot spring. It displays considerable colour variation, with flowers that may be red, purple, pink, white or blue.

Clematis cirrhosa and Clematis viticella are climbing plants that use shrubs and trees for support. They occur in scrub, forest margins, stream valleys and other places with suitable vegetation.

Ficaria chrysocephala and Ficaria ficarioides are associated mainly with cool or seasonally moist places. The minute Myosurus minimus grows in wet or seasonally inundated soils.

The genus Ranunculus displays the greatest ecological diversity. It includes species of dry grasslands and cultivated fields, species of woodland and mountain habitats, and aquatic or semi-aquatic species.

Ranunculus rionii, Ranunculus saniculifolius and Ranunculus sphaerospermus are associated with aquatic or seasonally inundated habitats, such as small ponds, dams, seasonal pools and shallow waters.

Pollination and dispersal

The flowers of most species are pollinated by insects, particularly bees, flies and beetles. Their vivid colours, pollen and nectar attract pollinators.

The fruits of Ranunculus, Adonis and Anemone consist of numerous achenes. In some species, the fruits possess hooks, hairs or other structures that facilitate their transport by animals or wind.

In species of the genus Clematis, the style persists on the achene and develops into a long, feathery structure, allowing the fruit to be dispersed by the wind.

Uses and importance to humans

Many members of the family are cultivated as ornamental plants. These include species of the genera Anemone, Clematis, Consolida, Delphinium, Nigella and Ranunculus.

Nigella sativa has been cultivated since antiquity for its aromatic seeds, which are used as a spice and in traditional medicine. It should not be confused with other species of the genus Nigella, whose properties and suitability for consumption may differ.

Species of the family have also contributed to the study of flower evolution, pollination and the production of secondary chemical compounds.

Toxicity

Many members of Ranunculaceae contain irritating or toxic substances. Various species contain glycosides that can produce protoanemonin when the plant tissues are damaged.

Contact with the sap of certain plants may cause skin irritation, inflammation or blistering. Ingestion may cause irritation of the mouth and digestive system, nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea.

Species of the genera Delphinium, Consolida and Staphisagria may contain powerful alkaloids. Wild plants of the family should not be used as food or medicine without reliable scientific identification and specialist guidance.

Alien taxa

Four taxa are recorded as alien or naturalized in Cyprus: Clematis vitalba, Consolida ajacis, Nigella sativa and Ranunculus bulbosus subsp. bulbosus.

Some may have been introduced as ornamental or cultivated plants and subsequently escaped from gardens and cultivation. Their monitoring is necessary to assess their spread and behaviour in Cypriot habitats.

Threats and protection

The principal potential threats to members of the family in Cyprus are:

  • the destruction and alteration of natural habitats,
  • agricultural intensification,
  • the use of herbicides and pesticides,
  • the abandonment of traditional agricultural practices,
  • the drainage of seasonal wetlands,
  • water pollution or diversion,
  • residential and tourism development,
  • quarrying and roadworks,
  • fires,
  • overgrazing or the complete cessation of grazing,
  • the collection of conspicuous wildflowers,
  • and climate change.

Particular priority should be given to the protection of the four endemic taxa and their restricted habitats, as well as to the conservation of seasonal wetlands supporting aquatic and semi-aquatic species of the genus Ranunculus.
