Το Plants of the World Online των Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew

Reseda alba

Reseda lutea

Reseda luteola

Reseda minoica

Reseda orientalis

Reseda odorata

Reseda phyteuma

The family Resedaceae, known as the mignonette family, is a family of flowering plants belonging to the order Brassicales. It includes mainly annual, biennial or perennial herbs and fewer shrubs, distributed primarily in the temperate and subtropical regions of Europe, Africa, Asia and North America.

In its modern broad taxonomic circumscription, the family includes approximately 11 genera and 107 species worldwide. Plants of the World Online of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew currently recognizes 11 accepted genera. The largest and best-known genus is Reseda, which includes approximately 55 species and displays its greatest diversity in the Mediterranean, western Asia and northern Africa.

According to the organized checklist of the flora of Cyprus, the family Resedaceae is represented in Cyprus by 1 genus and 7 taxa: 5 native non-endemic species, 1 alien or naturalized species and 1 species of uncertain status. No endemic or hybrid taxa of the family are recorded in Cyprus.

General characteristics

The members of Resedaceae occurring in Cyprus are herbaceous plants of the genus Reseda. They may be annual, biennial or short-lived perennial, with erect, ascending or branched stems.

The leaves are alternate and may be simple, entire, lobed or deeply divided. The lower leaves often form a loose basal rosette, while the upper leaves are smaller and arranged along the stem.

The flowers are usually small and arranged in elongated racemes. They are often bilaterally symmetrical or slightly asymmetrical and may be white, yellowish, greenish or pale yellow.

The number of sepals and petals varies. The petals are usually unequal and often deeply divided, creating a characteristic fringed appearance. The stamens are several and usually conspicuous.

The ovary is superior and generally consists of fused carpels. The fruit is a capsule that often remains open at the apex before complete maturity. It contains several small, usually kidney-shaped seeds.

Relationship with other families

Resedaceae belongs to the order Brassicales and is evolutionarily related to families such as Brassicaceae, Capparaceae and Cleomaceae.

Like many other members of the order, plants of Resedaceae contain glucosinolate compounds. These substances participate in the chemical defence of the plants and may be responsible for the distinctive smell or taste released when their tissues are damaged.

The family Resedaceae in Cyprus

All Cypriot taxa of the family belong to the genus Reseda. They occur mainly in open and sunny places, on dry or seasonally moist soils, in cultivated fields, fallow land, along roadsides, on stony slopes, in sandy areas and in disturbed habitats.

Several species are adapted to the conditions of the Mediterranean climate. They germinate after the first rains, develop during the winter and flower mainly in spring or early summer, before the most intense summer drought.

Ecology of the Cypriot species

Reseda alba

It is an annual, biennial or short-lived perennial herb with erect inflorescences and usually white flowers. It occurs in open places, along roadsides, on fallow land, in coastal soils, cultivated fields and other disturbed habitats.

Reseda lutea

It is an annual, biennial or perennial plant with deeply divided leaves and yellow-green flowers. It grows on dry soils, banks, roadsides, stony sites, cultivated or abandoned land and areas affected by human disturbance.

Reseda luteola

It is usually a biennial herb with an erect stem and long, narrow inflorescences of small yellowish flowers. It favours open places, roadsides, uncultivated ground, banks and disturbed sites.

Reseda minoica

It is a Mediterranean species of the genus Reseda that was taxonomically distinguished relatively recently from related taxa. Its presence in Cyprus emphasizes the phytogeographical connection of the island with the eastern Mediterranean.

Reseda orientalis

It is a species of the eastern Mediterranean and the wider region of western Asia. In Cyprus, it forms part of the native flora of open, dry and rocky habitats.

Reseda odorata

It is a well-known ornamental plant with small but strongly fragrant flowers. It has long been cultivated in gardens for its fragrance. Its recording as an alien or naturalized species in Cyprus is probably associated with escapes from cultivation.

Reseda phyteuma

It is an annual or perennial herb with a broad distribution from Madeira and Europe to the Mediterranean and the southern Caucasus. In the Cypriot checklist, it is recorded as a species of uncertain status, meaning that the origin or stability of its presence on the island requires further assessment.

Pollination and dispersal

The flowers of Reseda produce nectar and attract various insects, mainly bees, small flies and other insects that visit the inflorescences for food.

The capsules contain several small seeds. When they mature, the seeds are released through the open upper part of the fruit and fall to the ground or are transported over short distances by wind, water, animals and human activities.

Growth along roads, in cultivated land and in disturbed places facilitates the transport of the seeds with soil, agricultural machinery and vehicles.

Adaptations to the Mediterranean climate

Many species of the family cope with summer drought through their annual or biennial life cycle. The seeds remain in the soil during the dry period and germinate when suitable moisture conditions return.

The deep or multiple divisions of the leaves reduce the total surface exposed to intense solar radiation and may limit water loss. The ability to grow in poor, stony or disturbed soils allows the species to exploit sites with limited competition from other plants.

Uses and importance to humans

Reseda luteola, internationally known as weld or dyer’s rocket, was an important dye plant. Its aerial parts were used to produce a yellow dye, particularly for colouring textiles. It was one of the most important sources of yellow plant dye in Europe before the widespread introduction of synthetic colours.

Reseda odorata, known as mignonette, is cultivated as an ornamental plant for the strong and pleasant fragrance of its flowers. Although its flowers are neither large nor particularly conspicuous, their scent made it a popular plant of traditional gardens.

Some species of the genus have been used locally in traditional herbal medicine. These traditional uses do not constitute proof of safety or therapeutic effectiveness and should not be applied without specialist guidance.

Alien taxa

The only taxon of the family recorded as alien or naturalized in Cyprus is Reseda odorata. Its presence is associated with its cultivation as a fragrant ornamental plant.

Monitoring its populations outside gardens is useful for determining whether its occurrence remains casual or whether it can maintain self-reproducing populations.

Threats and protection

Most species of the family grow in open or disturbed habitats and do not depend on dense natural vegetation. Nevertheless, their local populations may be affected by:

  • agricultural intensification,
  • the use of herbicides,
  • the destruction of field margins,
  • excessive maintenance or clearance of roadsides,
  • residential and tourism development,
  • quarrying and excavation,
  • the loss of sandy and coastal habitats,
  • the spread of competitive alien plants,
  • and changes in rainfall caused by climate change.

The retention of small uncultivated strips, traditional agricultural landscapes and natural vegetation along fields and roads can contribute to the protection of the species of the family and many other annual plants.
