Greenbottle Fly – Calliphoridae, possible Lucilia sp. – Cyprus

Text by George Konstantinou.

Metallic green flies are among the most striking small insects visiting flowers. Many belong to the family Calliphoridae and the genus Lucilia, known in English as greenbottle flies. Behind their brilliant appearance lies an interesting biology linking the decomposition of organic matter with flower visitation and, in certain species, important scientific applications.

The photographed fly shows features consistent with Calliphoridae and probably the genus Lucilia. Its identification remains at this level, without assignment to a particular species.

The family Calliphoridae and the genus Lucilia

Calliphoridae belong to the order Diptera and the superfamily Oestroidea. A recent scientific study recognises more than 1,800 species worldwide, with the total depending on the taxonomic boundaries applied.

The genus Lucilia Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 includes approximately 60–70 species under its traditional, narrower definition; a recent phylogenomic study reports 64. Newer research proposes a broader definition incorporating related genera. Its species do not all share the same distribution or feeding habits.

Appearance and identification

Many Lucilia have a brilliant metallic green, blue-green or coppery-green thorax and abdomen. They possess large compound eyes, short antennae and conspicuous body bristles. Like other flies, they have one pair of functional wings, while the hind pair has been modified into halteres, organs contributing to balance during flight.

The photograph shows the strongly metallic green body surface, reddish eyes and transparent wings. Colour alone, however, is not a reliable diagnostic feature. Similar appearances occur in different species and even in other groups of flies.

Distinguishing Lucilia species requires combinations of fine characters, including bristle arrangements, features of the head and wing bases and, where necessary, genital morphology.

Distribution and habitats

Calliphoridae occur worldwide and occupy varied terrestrial environments. Lucilia is also widely distributed, but many species are restricted to particular geographical regions, while some have an almost cosmopolitan distribution.

Adult metallic green flies may occur in gardens, flowering vegetation and other places offering food. Their breeding sites depend on the requirements of each species’ larvae. The photograph shows an adult on a flower; it does not reveal the substrate in which its larva developed.

Adult feeding and flower visitation

Adults and larvae often exploit different food sources. Adult Calliphoridae can obtain sugars from nectar, honeydew, fruit and plant exudates. Protein-rich food sources are also important, particularly for reproduction in certain species.

Flower visitation is a substantial part of the biology of many flies in this family. Through contact with flowers’ reproductive structures, they can transfer pollen. Their effectiveness as pollinators depends on the fly species, flower structure and visiting behaviour.

Life cycle

Lucilia undergo complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa and adult. In carrion-feeding species, females deposit eggs on a suitable organic substrate. The larvae are legless and pale, usually developing through three larval instars.

After completing feeding, they leave the substrate and seek a sheltered place to pupate. The pupa lies within a puparium formed from the final larval skin. The adult fly subsequently emerges from it.

Development time is strongly influenced by temperature, as well as species and feeding conditions. Consequently, a single number of days cannot describe the life cycle of all species.

Larvae and decomposition

Many Lucilia species develop in dead animal tissues. Their larvae contribute to the breakdown of organic matter and the recycling of nutrients.

However, Calliphoridae encompass a considerable variety of lifestyles. Depending on the species, larvae may be saprophagous, parasitic or predatory. Important differences exist even within Lucilia, so the habits of one familiar species do not automatically characterise the entire group.

Veterinary and medical importance

Certain species, including Lucilia sericata and Lucilia cuprina, can cause myiasis under suitable circumstances: infestation of humans or animals by fly larvae. This ability concerns particular species and situations.

At the same time, specially produced Lucilia sericata larvae, raised under controlled conditions and appropriately disinfected, are used medically to remove necrotic tissue from certain wounds. This is a specialised therapeutic application involving medically reared larvae.

Forensic entomology

Carrion-feeding Calliphoridae play an important role in forensic entomology. Larval age and developmental stage, combined with temperature and other evidence, can help estimate the minimum time since a body was colonised.

Correct identification is essential because different species develop at different rates. This application requires specialist examination and cannot rely solely on the adult fly’s external appearance.

Ecological role

These flies connect different ecosystem functions: the larvae of many species contribute to decomposition, while adults visit flowers and can assist pollination. Observing them demonstrates that flies are an important component of natural diversity.

Further groups and species are presented in the organised Diptera catalogue of Biodiversity of Cyprus.
