Lithostege palaestinensis Amsel, 1935 – Cyprus
TEXT AND PHOTOS: GEORGE KONSTANTINOU – LATSIA, 29/3/2006
Lithostege palaestinensis is a moth belonging to the family Geometridae and subfamily Larentiinae. Its occurrence in Cyprus is documented in scientific literature.
Description and identification
The wingspan is approximately 28–32 mm. The overall colour is greyish white, with fine dark scaling and no conspicuous pattern. It closely resembles Lithostege farinata, but in L. palaestinensis dark scales also occur on the hindwings.
In the Cypriot material described in the 2005 publication, males measured 30.3–31.5 mm and females 31.9–32.5 mm in wingspan. The forewings were described as grey and the hindwings as white, both lacking transverse lines. The labial palps are long and white, and the antennae are simple in both sexes.
Separating related species of the genus may require examination of the genitalia. A study from Turkey, published in 2019, also used DNA barcoding to confirm the distinction between L. palaestinensis, L. griseata and L. ancyrana.
Occurrence in Cyprus and flight period
The first published record for the Cypriot fauna was presented by Can Doğanlar and Arap in 2005, based on specimens collected in 2002 and 2003.
Records came from Akdeniz, Akova, Dip Karpaz, Lefke and Dikmen. At Gypsou, listed as Akova in the study, 25 males and 44 females were collected on 10 April 2003.
Collection dates for this species in that study ranged from 16 March to 3 May. The photographic record from Latsia on 29 March 2006 falls within the same spring period. Specimens in the survey were collected using light traps.
Distribution and elevation records
Besides Cyprus, the species is reported from southern and eastern Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Israel, Palestine, Iraq, northern Saudi Arabia and Iran.
The 2011 revision includes specimens from elevations of 240–2,500 m, at different localities outside Cyprus.
Larvae and host plants
Published literature lists plants of the family Brassicaceae as larval hosts, including Sisymbrium officinale, Sinapis arvensis and Isatis tinctoria. The 2011 revision additionally lists Berberis incana. These are literature records for the species and do not represent feeding observations from Cyprus.
Conservation status
The European Red List of Moths, published in 2026, classifies the species as Least Concern (LC) for both Europe and the European Union of 27 member states. This is a regional assessment.
