Έχουν αρχίσει να μας φτάνουν τα πρώτα φλαμίνγκο Greater flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) όπως διαπιστώσαμε στις 23/9/2017 αλλά ακόμα δυστυχώς δεν έβρεξε και οι 2 μας αλυκές είναι χωρίς νερό.

Η αλυκή Ακρωτηρίου έχει ελάχιστο νερό με περίπου 200 φλαμίνγκο, ενώ η αλυκή Λάρνακας δεν έχει καθόλου νερό.

Τα φλαμίνγκο έρχονται στην  Κύπρο καθοδόν προς την Αφρική που πάνε για να ξεχειμωνιάσουν, ένας μεγάλος αριθμός από αυτά σταματά στην Κύπρο και ξεχειμωνιάζουν στις αλυκές μας προσφέροντας στους ντόπιους αλλά και ξένους τουρίστες ένα υπέροχο θέαμα.

Τα φλαμίνγκο που φτάνουν αυτές τις μέρες, αλλά και πολλά άλλα υδρόβια αποδημητικά πουλιά βρίσκουν τις αλυκές χωρίς νερό και έτσι συνεχίζουν τον δρόμο τους για την Αφρική.

Το ίδιο φαινόμενο έχει συμβεί και πέρσι με αποτέλεσμα να είχαμε μια πολύ φτωχή χρονιά με φλαμίνγκο ιδίως στην αλυκή Λάρνακας.

Αρκετά όμως  βρίσκουν καταφύγιο στις 2 μεγάλές λίμνες επεξεργασίας λυμάτων στην Λάρνακα που βρίσκονται πίσω από το αεροδρόμιό, και φιλοξενούν εκτός από τα φλαμίνγκο και χιλιάδες άλλα  αποδημητικά πουλιά, όπου μερικά από αυτά να είναι πολύ σπάνια για την Κύπρο.

Το τμήμα δασών έχει φτιάξει εκεί παρατηρητήριο πτηνών όπου το επισκέπτονται πολλοί ξένοι άλλα και ντόπιοι παρατηρητές και φωτογράφοι αγρίων πτηνών.

 Οι μεγάλοι αριθμοί φλαμίνγκο όμως δεν έχουν φτάσει ακόμα. Όπως έχει ανακοινωθεί από την μετεωρολογική υπηρεσία το επόμενο τριήμερο έρχονται βροχές. Ας ελπίσουμε ότι θα βρέξει ικανοποιητικά να γεμίσουν οι αλυκές, και έτσι να βρουν τα πουλιά καταφύγιο.

The First Flamingos Have Begun to Arrive, but the Salt Lakes Are Without Water

The first Greater Flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus) have begun to arrive in Cyprus, as we observed on 23 September 2017. Unfortunately, however, it has not yet rained and both of our salt lakes are without water.

Akrotiri Salt Lake contains only a very small amount of water and approximately 200 flamingos, while Larnaca Salt Lake has no water at all.

The flamingos arrive in Cyprus while travelling towards Africa, where they spend the winter. A large number of them stop in Cyprus and overwinter at our salt lakes, offering both local people and foreign tourists a magnificent spectacle.

The flamingos arriving during these days, together with many other migratory waterbirds, find the salt lakes without water and therefore continue their journey towards Africa.

The same phenomenon occurred last year, resulting in a very poor year for flamingos, particularly at Larnaca Salt Lake.

A considerable number of birds, however, find refuge in the two large sewage-treatment ponds in Larnaca, situated behind the airport. Apart from flamingos, these ponds host thousands of other migratory birds, some of which are extremely rare in Cyprus.

The Department of Forests has constructed a birdwatching hide there, which is visited by many foreign and local birdwatchers and wildlife photographers.

The large numbers of flamingos, however, have not yet arrived. According to an announcement by the Meteorological Service, rain is expected during the next three days. Let us hope that sufficient rain will fall to fill the salt lakes, allowing the birds to find refuge.
