Meikle.

Ο αιωνόβιος δρυς ανήκει στο αποδεκτό taxon Quercus infectoria subsp. veneris (A.Kern.) Meikle, της οικογένειας Fagaceae.

Το Plants of the World Online του Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew

835. Quercus infectoria subsp. veneris (A.Kern.)

Quercus infectoria var. veneris (A.Kern.) H.Lindb.
Quercus lusitanica subsp. veneris (A.Kern.) Holmboe
Quercus veneris A.Kern.

Η σημερινή αποδεκτή ονομασία είναι Quercus infectoria subsp. veneris (A.Kern.) Meikle.

TEXT AND PHOTOS: GEORGE KONSTANTINOU – Kato Pyrgos, Tylliria, 13/5/2016

The centuries-old Aleppo oak at Kato Pyrgos

An impressive centuries-old oak belonging to Quercus infectoria subsp. veneris (A.Kern.) Meikle grows in the village square of Kato Pyrgos, Tylliria, Nicosia District. The tree is an important natural and historical landmark of the community and has been officially designated by the Department of Forests of the Republic of Cyprus as an Individual Tree – Monument of Nature outside the State Forests.

The Biodiversity of Cyprus field record gives 1898 as the planting year, a height of approximately 20 metres and a trunk circumference of approximately 4.25 metres. The tree was photographed and recorded by George Konstantinou on 13 May 2016.

Monument of Nature – Department of Forests

The oak is included in the official Department of Forests register of Individual Trees – Monuments of Nature outside the State Forests.

The official record gives:

Species: Oak
District: Nicosia
Village: Kato Pyrgos
Circumference at breast height: 4.00 m
Height: 20 m
Age in the official record: 113 years
Proclamation date: 30/1/2004
Status: Individual Tree – Monument of Nature outside the State Forests
Responsible authority: Department of Forests, Republic of Cyprus

Its official protection recognises the exceptional natural, historical, aesthetic and landscape value of the tree.

Planting year and age

The Biodiversity of Cyprus field record gives 1898 as the planting year. On the basis of this historical record, the tree is now more than 125 years old.

The Department of Forests database records an age of 113 years, reflecting the estimate used when the official record was compiled rather than a continuously updated present-day age.

The planting year of 1898 therefore provides particularly useful historical evidence for following the age of this specific tree.

Dimensions

During the Biodiversity of Cyprus field record on 13 May 2016, the tree measured approximately:

Height: 20 m
Trunk circumference: 4.25 m

The earlier official Department of Forests measurement also gives a height of 20 m, but a circumference of 4.00 m.

The 25-centimetre difference is consistent with measurements having been made at different times and possibly at slightly different positions on the trunk.

The taxon Quercus infectoria subsp. veneris

The tree belongs to the accepted taxon Quercus infectoria subsp. veneris (A.Kern.) Meikle, family Fagaceae.

Plants of the World Online, maintained by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, accepts this subspecies and includes Cyprus within its native range, which extends from the eastern Mediterranean to Iran.

In the Organized Dynamic Checklist of the Flora of Cyprus maintained by Biodiversity of Cyprus it is recorded as:

835. Quercus infectoria subsp. veneris (A.Kern.) Meikle – Subspecies – Native non-endemic

Native non-endemic to Cyprus

The subspecies is native but non-endemic to Cyprus. It is therefore a natural component of the Cypriot flora but is not restricted to the island.

The Cyprus Department of Forests also includes it among the native forest tree species of Cyprus.

Common names

The Greek names Δρυς and Δρυς η βαφική are used for this oak, while the established English common name for Quercus infectoria is Aleppo oak.

The name Mediterranean oak also occurs in older sources, but Aleppo oak is used in the title of this article.

Synonyms

The taxon has been described under several botanical names in the past. Important synonyms listed by Kew include:

Quercus infectoria var. veneris (A.Kern.) H.Lindb.
Quercus lusitanica subsp. veneris (A.Kern.) Holmboe
Quercus veneris A.Kern.

The currently accepted name is Quercus infectoria subsp. veneris (A.Kern.) Meikle.

Description

It is a deciduous or sometimes semi-evergreen tree with a broad, often irregular crown. When protected from heavy grazing and repeated disturbance it can develop into a large tree with a powerful trunk.

The bark of mature specimens is greyish brown and becomes deeply fissured with age. Open-grown trees can develop a broad spreading crown, as seen in the Kato Pyrgos specimen.

Leaves

The leaves are relatively thin and generally larger than those of Quercus coccifera subsp. calliprinos. They are usually ovate to oblong and may have wavy, toothed or shallowly lobed margins.

Considerable natural variation occurs in their shape.

Flowers

Like other oaks, it is monoecious, carrying separate male and female flowers on the same tree.

Male flowers occur in hanging catkins, while the small female flowers occur singly or in small groups. Pollination takes place mainly by wind.

Fruit – Acorn

The fruit is the characteristic acorn, partly enclosed at its base by a cupule.

Acorns provide food for various animals and contribute to the natural regeneration of oak populations.

Characteristic galls

Quercus infectoria is particularly well known for the galls that develop on young shoots and other plant tissues as a result of gall-wasp activity.

The galls are rich in tannins and have been used for centuries in various regions in dyes, inks, tanning and traditional applications.

This association with tannins is also reflected in the older Greek name Δρυς η βαφική.

Habitat

In Cyprus the subspecies occurs in valleys, pine forests, shrubland, agricultural landscapes, slopes and other habitats from low elevations to higher ground.

It may occur as a smaller tree or even a shrub under dry or heavily grazed conditions but can become a large and impressive tree where protected and given adequate space.

Forest stands in Cyprus

Quercus infectoria subsp. veneris also has considerable ecological importance because it forms characteristic forest stands in Cyprus.

The Department of Forests recognises forests of Quercus infectoria subsp. veneris as habitat type 93A0 – Anagyro foetidae-Quercetum infectoriae, included in Annex I of the Habitats Directive.

Ecological importance

Large old oak trees provide important ecological services. Their crowns offer shade and resting places for birds, while old bark, fissures and cavities can provide microhabitats for invertebrates, lichens, fungi and other organisms.

Acorns provide food for wildlife, while fallen leaves enrich the soil with organic matter.

An ancient tree within a village therefore possesses both ecological and cultural value.

The oak as part of Kato Pyrgos village square

Its position in the village square of Kato Pyrgos has made the tree a characteristic feature of the settlement.

For more than a century it has provided shade and formed part of everyday community life. It has survived major social and historical changes and today acts as a living link between the natural heritage and history of the village.

Other monumental oaks in Cyprus

The Department of Forests records several exceptional individuals of the same subspecies elsewhere in Cyprus.

These include the oak at Pyrgos tis Rigenas in Akamas Forest, with a girth of 5.35 m, a height of 18 m and a published estimated age of 500 years, and the outstanding oak at Lania, with a girth of 8.10 m, a height of 26 m and a published estimated age of 800 years.

These records demonstrate the exceptional longevity and dimensions that the subspecies can achieve in Cyprus.

Conservation status – IUCN

In the organized monumental-tree catalogue of Biodiversity of Cyprus, Quercus infectoria subsp. veneris is recorded as:

LC – Least Concern

The broader conservation status of the taxon does not reduce the importance of this individual tree at Kato Pyrgos, which receives separate official protection as a Monument of Nature.

Historical and natural significance

The centuries-old oak of Kato Pyrgos is an excellent example of how an individual tree can possess multiple layers of significance.

Its age, great dimensions, long presence within the village square, ecological value and official protection by the Department of Forests make it an important living monument of Tylliria.
