Below in English
4) Κουκουβάγια – Κουκουφκιάος - Little Owl (Athene noctua)
5) θουπί - Cyprus Scops Owl ( Otus Cyprius )

GEORGE KONSTANTINOU, 29 October 2017
In Cyprus, we encounter five species of these beautiful but misunderstood birds.
They are misunderstood because various myths—entirely unjustified, of course—associate these birds with death. One such myth claims that if you hear an owl outside your house, there will be a death in the family. Many uninhabited houses in which Barn Owls nested were also believed to be haunted because people heard the birds’ cries during the night.
Naturally, all these myths and superstitions have caused people to fear and kill the birds or destroy their nests to force them to leave.
It should be noted that these superstitions do not exist only in Cyprus but also in other countries, such as Kenya.
Owls are nocturnal birds of prey and are extremely beneficial to agriculture because rodents, which cause incalculable damage to humans, form a large part of their diet. A pair of Barn Owls consumes thousands of rats and mice in a single year.
Imagine the enormous problem we would face with rodents if these birds did not exist.
Owls also feed on large insects, such as grasshoppers, which are likewise harmful to agriculture, as well as lizards, small birds and young snakes.
They usually swallow their prey whole. After digestion, they regurgitate a small ball known as a pellet, consisting of the fur and bones of their prey that they cannot digest.
All owl species found in Cyprus are strictly protected by law, although irresponsible hunters frequently kill them. On many occasions during the hunting season, I have found owls that had been shot by hunters.
Owls possess an extraordinary and completely silent flight, allowing them to approach without being detected by their prey during an attack.
They have incredible vision in darkness and can detect even the slightest movement from a considerable distance.
There is a belief that owls cannot see well during the day, but this is incorrect because they can see equally well in daylight. They do not usually move around during the day because most of their prey is active at night. They can also hunt undisturbed beneath the cover and silence of darkness.
The five owl species found in Cyprus are the following:
1. Barn Owl – Tyto alba
The Barn Owl is the most beautiful of all the owl species and the most widely distributed throughout the world. It feeds mainly on rodents.
It nests in cavities in cliffs, old wells and ruins and is encountered mainly in lowland areas.
Its Cypriot name, “Anthropopoulli”, meaning “human-like bird”, derives from the human-like appearance of its face.
2. Long-eared Owl – Asio otus
The Long-eared Owl is both a migratory and a locally occurring species that feeds primarily on rodents and small birds.
It nests in tall trees, using old nests built by members of the crow family, and is encountered mainly in lowland areas.
Hunters cause extensive destruction to its nests and chicks. Control operations against crows take place during the owl’s breeding season, and hunters shoot at nests after mistaking them for the nests of corvids.
On several occasions, I have seen nests that had been shot, with dead owl chicks still inside them.
3. Short-eared Owl – Asio flammeus
The Short-eared Owl is a migratory species and a rare visitor to Cyprus, with two or three birds usually reported each year, primarily in coastal areas.
During all the years I have been involved in bird photography, I have encountered this bird only once, at the village of Mandria in the Paphos District.
This owl also hunts during the day and does not breed in Cyprus.
4. Little Owl – Athene noctua
In ancient times, the Little Owl was regarded as the bird of wisdom.
It breeds in ruins, holes in the ground, cliffs, hollow trees and even among piles of stones.
It is encountered mainly in lowland areas.
I have observed that when this bird has chicks, it hunts even during the daytime.
It feeds on small rodents, small reptiles and insects.
5. Cyprus Scops Owl – Otus cyprius
The Cyprus Scops Owl is endemic to Cyprus and is encountered mainly in mountainous areas.
It feeds on small rodents, small reptiles and insects.
It nests in ruins, holes and hollow trees.
We must combat and eliminate all the myths and superstitions that harm the rare biodiversity of our country through education and by teaching the younger generations.
As we say in the Cypriot dialect, “old heads do not change”.
The morality and civilisation of a people can be judged by the way they treat animals and nature.
