Στην πραγματικότητα τα ζώα αυτά τρέφονται μόνο με υπερώριμα φρούτα τα οποία είναι άχρηστα για τους γεωργούς καθώς τα υπερώριμα φρούτα δεν είναι εμπορεύσιμα. Ο νυχτοπάππαρος διαλέγει τα υπερώριμα φρούτα διότι είναι μαλακά και έχουν αρκετό χυμό, μασά το φρούτο και καταπίνει μόνο τον χυμό ενώ το υπόλοιπο το φτύνει. Μπορεί να κάνει και μερικές ζημίες άλλα επειδή ενοχλεί τον άνθρωπο πρέπει να το εξαφανίσουμε;

The Egyptian fruit bat (Rousettus aegyptiacus), known in Cyprus as “Nychtopapparos” or “Nychtokorakas”, is one of the 30 mammal species found in Cyprus and one of the island’s 19 bat species. It is a fruit bat belonging to the group commonly known as megabats. With a wingspan of up to 60 centimetres, it is the largest bat species found in our country.

Cyprus is the only European country that supports a population of this bat. It is also found in several African countries, the Middle East, Pakistan and India.

It is a nocturnal animal with a body covered in grey fur and wings formed by leathery membranes that enable it to fly. Its head resembles that of a weasel. These bats have very good eyesight, allowing them to see at night, and powerful feet with large claws. These enable them to cling to the trees on which they feed and to the ceilings of caves, where they hang upside down and roost during the day.

During daylight hours, they roost communally in natural caves, ravines, caves in abandoned quarries and galleries in old mines. Inside the caves, they remain together throughout the day, often pressed closely against one another for protection and warmth. As soon as darkness falls, they emerge in search of food and return before dawn.

Late in spring, the female gives birth to a single young bat. It remains attached to its mother’s chest and suckles until it can cling independently to the cave ceiling and eventually fly on its own. The mother is capable of flying while carrying the young bat attached to her body.

They may sometimes disappear from a cave in which they live and reappear several months later. Where they go and why they leave remain unknown.

During the night, they can travel very long distances in search of food.

They are very friendly animals and can become accustomed to people quite easily. They can also live and reproduce in captivity. Egyptian fruit bats are kept at Limassol Zoo, where they breed successfully, and the young are released into their natural environment.

They feed exclusively on overripe fruit, including grapes, loquats, figs, dates, apples, mulberries, the fruit of the “mavromata” tree, the fruit of Ficus trees and many other types of fruit. They also feed on nectar obtained from flowers, including those of almond and eucalyptus trees.

In the past, these animals were considered harmful to agriculture because they feed on fruit and were believed to destroy crops. As a result, they were persecuted relentlessly. A bounty was even placed on them by the state, which purchased dead animals.

They were poisoned inside caves or forced to emerge and then shot, with hundreds being killed. Unfortunately, this still happens today, as some irresponsible hunters shoot them for amusement.

In reality, these animals feed only on overripe fruit that is of no use to farmers because it cannot be marketed. The Egyptian fruit bat chooses overripe fruit because it is soft and contains plenty of juice. It chews the fruit, swallows only the juice and spits out the remaining material.

It may occasionally cause some damage, but does the fact that it inconveniences people justify its extermination?

These bats are beneficial animals because they often carry fruit and its seeds away from the parent tree before feeding. In this way, they assist in the dispersal of many forest plant species. Fig trees can be seen growing at the entrances of many caves, and their presence there is due to the activity of these animals.

By selecting overripe fruit, they also destroy the larvae of several harmful insects, including the Mediterranean fruit fly.

Today, the Cypriot population of the Egyptian fruit bat is on the brink of extinction. It is estimated that only about one thousand individuals remain, and their number continues to decline.

This decline is attributed to the destruction of the animal’s habitats, illegal persecution and disturbance, pesticides and food shortages resulting from the abandonment of many agricultural crops, including vineyards.

Poachers’ nets placed in orchards for the illegal trapping of birds constitute a serious danger to Egyptian fruit bats because the animals become entangled in them during the night.

On one occasion, someone found such a net in an orchard with 16 Egyptian fruit bats trapped in it in a terrible condition and brought it to me. With great difficulty and considerable effort, I managed to remove them from the net.

I attempted to release them at night in a suitable area, but several had been injured by the net and were unable to fly. I placed them in a large enclosure until they recovered.

They were very friendly animals, and I was impressed that they began eating from my hand from the very first day. After several weeks, they had recovered. When I entered the enclosure carrying fruit, they flew towards me, landed on my hand and began to feed.

Among them was an entirely white individual with bright red eyes that had albinism. When I showed its photograph to Czech scientists who study these animals throughout their geographical range, they were astonished. They told me that they had seen many thousands of Egyptian fruit bats but had never encountered an individual like this one.

I have also seen dead animals hanging from live electrical wires on several occasions. Their deaths occur because the bats hang upside down from one wire and, because of their size, may touch a second wire, resulting in electrocution.

Today, the Egyptian fruit bat is a strictly protected species in Cyprus, as are all the island’s bat species, under the Protection and Management of Wild Birds and Game Species Law of 2003. All bat species are also protected at the European level under the Habitats Directive 92/43/EEC.

The state has implemented several measures to protect these animals, including the establishment of plantations containing forest species on which they feed and the installation of special gates at the entrances of some caves.

These measures, however, are not sufficient. Public awareness is needed, particularly among people living in rural areas. The caves used by the bats should be protected, and information signs should be installed to prevent people from entering them.

Only a few caves supporting these animals remain, and they are completely accessible to anyone. They could be protected at very little cost.
