The Partridge, a Persecuted Bird of Cyprus (Web TV) – By George Konstantinou – Politis Newspaper, 16 April 2018

The partridge is one of the most beautiful birds found in Cyprus, and its beauty has inspired many songwriters and poets.
It is one of the most persecuted birds in Cyprus because, unfortunately, it is classified among the island’s principal game species and is hunted relentlessly and obsessively by forty thousand hunters.
In Cyprus, it is found at every elevation, from coastal areas to the highest peaks of the Troodos Mountains.
Its common name is the Chukar Partridge and its scientific name is Alectoris chukar. Alectoris is the genus, and the bird belongs to the pheasant family, Phasianidae, and the order Galliformes. The genus Alectoris contains eight bird species in total, but only the Chukar Partridge is found in Cyprus.
Feeding and sleeping
It feeds on a variety of foods, including seeds, fresh shoots, grasses, olives, ripe fruit that has fallen beneath trees and insects.
During the summer, it usually searches for food early in the morning and late in the afternoon. During the hottest hours of the day, it remains hidden beneath dense shrubs and foliage, seeking cool shelter. In winter, it moves around and feeds throughout the day.
At night, it usually roosts in elevated places, such as the tops of hills and cliffs, where it can easily detect possible dangers.
At the first faint light of dawn, it begins making its familiar call.
The chicks
Partridges are social birds and are usually encountered in groups of between five and twenty individuals. From February onwards, the birds are seen in pairs as the egg-laying season approaches.
They lay between six and fifteen eggs in early spring. Their nests are built on the ground with a few pieces of dry grass and feathers and are concealed among dense vegetation or beneath shrubs.
During the egg-laying period, each pair maintains its own territory. The male protects this area and fights fiercely with other males that enter it.
Incubation lasts approximately 23 days. Only a few hours after hatching, the young partridge chicks are ready to follow their mother.
During the first weeks of their lives, the young chicks require protein-rich food for their development. For this reason, they feed almost exclusively on various insects and worms.
Their mother can be observed scratching the ground to uncover insects for the chicks to eat.
Intelligent birds
The behaviour of the chicks and their mother when danger appears is extremely impressive. The chicks react as if an explosion has occurred and disappear into the surrounding area within fractions of a second. They blend perfectly with the grass and stones and become extremely difficult to locate.
Meanwhile, the mother runs along the ground pretending to be injured and unable to fly. In this way, she encourages the predator to pursue her, allowing the chicks to escape.
When the danger has passed, the mother uses a characteristic call to summon the young chicks back to her.
At only one week of age, the chicks can make short flights when threatened. They remain with their parents until autumn. During the winter, they go their separate ways in preparation for breeding the following spring.
Their enemies
The partridge has many enemies, the most important being humans and foxes. During recent years, the excessive increase in the fox population has become a serious problem, with foxes devouring eggs and chicks found on the ground.
Young birds are also particularly vulnerable to birds of prey, snakes and rats. Naturally, all these predators form part of the food chain that helps maintain the balance of nature.
Severe weather conditions, including heavy rain and hailstorms, can sometimes cause extensive destruction of partridge eggs and chicks, as well as those of other birds.
The harvesting of cereal crops causes enormous destruction to nests and chicks because it takes place during the birds’ breeding season, when partridges frequently build their nests among the crops. Black Francolins also suffer extensive losses during harvesting because they have similar habits to partridges.
Most people usually collect partridge chicks and eggs whenever they encounter them. In the past, people had the harmful Easter custom of collecting partridge eggs and dyeing them red because the partridge’s egg-laying season coincides with Easter.
Poachers and the failure to observe the hunting quota during the hunting season have contributed to the decline of the partridge population. Fortunately, poaching has now decreased significantly because of the extremely strict penalties imposed on poachers by the Game and Fauna Service.
Training hunting dogs in the countryside during the partridges’ breeding season has devastating consequences for eggs, chicks and the fauna of our country in general.
Let us respect and protect this proud and beautiful bird so that both we and future generations may always enjoy it and continue hearing its call echoing across the plains and mountains.
