Text, photographs and video by George Konstantinou
Among the rich birdlife of our island, corvids hold an important place. However, unlike many other birds, they are not particularly appreciated or loved by people, as they are considered harmful both to humans and to other bird species. They damage farmers’ crops and destroy the nests of other birds by eating their eggs and chicks. For this reason, they are relentlessly controlled throughout the world in various ways. Despite these efforts, however, their numbers do not decline dramatically, because these birds are renowned for their great intelligence.
In recent years, some species have also begun living and breeding in cities, where they feed on human refuse. For the most part, they are omnivorous birds and will eat almost anything they can find: seeds, lizards, rodents, fruit, nuts, human refuse, dead fish, insects, spiders, worms and animals killed by vehicles on the roads. They have extremely powerful beaks and can easily crack even a walnut.
All corvids belong to the family Corvidae. Because of their intelligence and cautious nature, the corvids of Cyprus are very difficult for people to approach, as they know that humans are among their greatest enemies. During the period of British rule, in order for someone to obtain a hunting licence, they had to present a certain number of heads of corvids and foxes.
Corvids are cosmopolitan birds and are found throughout the world, with 120 different species recorded so far. Seven species of corvids have been recorded in Cyprus:
The Jackdaw is black in colour with some grey around the neck and can be found both in mountainous and lowland areas, as well as within towns and cities. It feeds mainly on insects, but will also eat whatever else it can find. It builds its nest in holes in high cliffs and also in abandoned buildings. It lays up to five bluish-green eggs.
The Hooded Crow is black and grey and can be found throughout Cyprus, including in towns and cities. It feeds on almost anything it can find and builds its nest high in trees such as eucalyptus and cypress trees, using thick branches. Inside the nest it places various soft materials such as feathers from other birds, string, pieces of paper and even plastic bags. It also lays up to five bluish-green eggs.
The Common Magpie has iridescent black-and-white plumage and a very long tail. It also feeds on almost anything it can find and occurs throughout Cyprus, including in urban areas. It is considered the most harmful of all the corvid species found on our island, particularly in relation to other bird species.
The nest of the Common Magpie is impressive and is usually built in thorny bushes and hawthorn trees. It begins construction using thick branches and then lines the interior with a thick layer of mud, which it shapes with its beak. This is done to insulate the nest from the cold. It then places very fine, soft, dry grasses inside and finally constructs a kind of canopy of dry branches over the nest to protect the chicks from rain and sun. It lays up to six bluish-green eggs. The Common Magpie is one of the most intelligent birds found on our island.
The Common Raven is black and is the largest corvid species found in Cyprus. It is a purely carnivorous bird and feeds on animals that it is able to catch, as well as on carrion.
In the past, Common Ravens existed in large numbers in Cyprus, particularly in the Troodos mountain range. Unfortunately, today we have virtually exterminated them, as we did the vultures, through the use of poisons placed in dead animals to control foxes. Only a few pairs remain in the occupied areas, mainly in the Pentadaktylos mountain range.
It nests on inaccessible cliffs and in very tall trees. It is a strictly protected species. I should mention that for the last ten years there had been a pair on the cliffs of the occupied village of Larnakas tis Lapithou, and whenever I passed through the area I would always see them. Three years ago, I saw each of them carrying a large piece of meat which was probably poisoned, because that was the last time I ever saw them. Crimes against nature continue unabated.
The Eurasian Jay is the smallest of the corvid species of Cyprus and constitutes an endemic subspecies of Cyprus. It is a strictly protected species and is found in the high mountainous regions of Troodos. It feeds on whatever it can find and very often causes damage to farmers’ fruit crops. It nests in trees.
At Troodos Square, these birds have learned to steal nuts from vendors’ shelves. They also frequent picnic sites after visitors have left and feed on the refuse they find there.
The European Roller, also known locally as Κράγκα or Χαλκοκουρούνα, is a migratory species and the most beautiful of the corvids found on our island. It breeds in Cyprus in holes in banks and lays up to five white eggs. It feeds mainly on insects and small reptiles.
I have left the Brown-necked Raven until last because its presence in Cyprus came as a great surprise, and it is quite possible that we may never see this species in Cyprus again.
The Brown-necked Raven, an extremely rare bird for Cyprus, was reported and found by Keith and Raija Howard on 24 March 2016 at Cape Greco. It was a vagrant visitor and constituted the first record of the species in Cyprus.
It belongs to the family Corvidae and is not a migratory species. It is found in southern Africa, Ethiopia, the Middle East, Kazakhstan, Iran and Pakistan. Unfortunately, the bird remained for only two days, and very few people had the opportunity to see and photograph it.
The Brown-necked Raven closely resembles the Common Raven. It is black with brown colouring around the neck, is slightly smaller than the Common Raven and has a more slender beak.
