Bela konstantinoui – A New Fossil Marine Gastropod Species from the Pliocene of Cyprus

Text by George Konstantinou

A Species New to Science

Bela konstantinoui Kolokotronis, 2023 is an extinct species of small marine gastropod belonging to the family Mangeliidae. It was discovered in Pliocene fossil deposits near Agrokipia village in the Nicosia District of Cyprus.

The species was formally described as new to science by Cypriot researcher Demetris Kolokotronis and published in the scientific journal Gloria Maris in 2023.

Its scientific description was based on five specimens selected from a total of eight fossil shells. Detailed comparison with related species demonstrated that they possessed a consistent combination of characteristics not corresponding to any species previously known to science.

Origin of the Name

The name konstantinoui was given in honour of George Konstantinou, recognising his contribution to the research, documentation and promotion of the natural history and biodiversity of Cyprus.

The second part of a scientific name may commemorate a person who contributed to the discovery, study or understanding of a particular group of organisms.

The name Bela konstantinoui is the permanent scientific name of the species. It is accompanied by the surname of the author who described it and the year of publication: Bela konstantinoui Kolokotronis, 2023.

I warmly thank Demetris Kolokotronis for the exceptional honour of naming this new fossil species from Cyprus after me.

The Genus Bela

Bela is a genus of small marine gastropods belonging to the family Mangeliidae within the superfamily Conoidea.

Members of the genus generally possess an ovate to fusiform shell. Its surface may be dull, comparatively smooth or marked by distinct axial ribs.

The spire is elevated but shorter than the final or body whorl. The columella is flattened and the siphonal canal is short.

A small notch or posterior sinus occurs where the outer lip of the aperture meets the body whorl. This feature is associated with the arrangement of the mantle and siphon in the living animal and is important in the taxonomic identification of conoidean gastropods.

Taxonomic History of the Genus

The taxonomic history of Bela is complicated. During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, several researchers applied the name to species later placed in the genera Propebela, Oenopota and Curtitoma.

At the same time, the name Raphitoma was formerly used for certain species now classified within Bela.

The identification of a fossil shell cannot therefore be based only on its general fusiform shape. It requires examination of the protoconch, whorls, sculpture, aperture, siphonal canal and posterior sinus.

Shell Morphology

The shell of Bela konstantinoui is small and fusiform, with an elevated spire and a comparatively large final whorl.

Successive whorls gradually increase in size. The sutures separating them are clearly defined, while the external sculpture includes features that distinguish the species from related forms.

The aperture occurs on one side of the body whorl. At its base, it continues into a short siphonal canal through which the soft siphon extended when the animal was alive.

The outer lip possesses a characteristic posterior sinus. The position, inclination and shape of this sinus provide important features for identifying species of the family Mangeliidae.

Specimens Used in the Scientific Description

The study was based on five specimens selected from a total of eight fossil shells.

The holotype, the single specimen upon which the scientific name was formally established, measures 9.6 millimetres high and 3.9 millimetres wide. It is deposited in the palaeontological collection of the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle in Paris under catalogue number MNHN.F.A86188.

The four paratypes illustrated in the publication have the following dimensions:

  • Paratype 1: 5.9 millimetres high and 3.0 millimetres wide.
  • Paratype 2: 5.8 millimetres high and 3.0 millimetres wide.
  • Paratype 3: 8.1 millimetres high and 3.8 millimetres wide.
  • Paratype 4: 7.4 millimetres high and 3.5 millimetres wide.

Some paratypes are also deposited in the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences in Brussels. Preserving the holotype and paratypes in recognised scientific institutions allows future researchers to examine the material and reassess the identification of the species.

Comparison with Related Species

To be recognised as new to science, Bela konstantinoui was compared with other morphologically similar fossil gastropods.

The original publication distinguishes it from Bela vulpecula (Brocchi, 1814) and from juvenile specimens belonging to the Bela hispidula species group.

The comparison was not based on a single characteristic. The investigation considered:

  • the proportions of the shell,
  • the height and form of the spire,
  • the development of the body whorl,
  • the form of the sutures,
  • the axial and spiral sculpture,
  • the shape of the aperture,
  • the construction of the siphonal canal,
  • the position and inclination of the posterior sinus.

The repeated occurrence of the same combination of characters in several specimens supported their recognition as a separate species.

Examination Under Ultraviolet Light

Some fossil shells preserve traces of their original colour patterns even when these are no longer visible under natural illumination.

Ultraviolet light was used during the examination of Bela konstantinoui. Fluorescent bands and details of the shell’s original pattern became visible under this form of illumination.

Fluorescence does not reproduce the original colours exactly as they appeared when the animal was alive. It instead reveals chemical differences between areas of the shell that formerly carried different pigmentation.

This method is particularly useful in molluscan palaeontology because it can reveal patterns that have completely disappeared from the surface under ordinary light. Such patterns may provide additional characters for comparing and distinguishing related species.

Probable Way of Life

Because Bela konstantinoui is known only from fossil shells, no direct information survives concerning its soft tissues, behaviour or precise diet.

Its relationship to other members of the superfamily Conoidea suggests that it was probably a small predatory marine gastropod.

Living related species move upon or within marine sediment and feed on small invertebrates. They possess a specialised proboscis and radular teeth adapted for capturing prey.

This is a biological inference based upon related organisms rather than a direct observation of the extinct Cypriot species.

Pliocene Cyprus

The Pliocene Epoch extended from approximately 5.33 to 2.58 million years ago.

During this time, parts of the present interior of Cyprus were covered by the sea. Fine sediments accumulated on the sea floor, burying molluscan shells and the remains of other organisms.

Geological processes gradually uplifted the island and transformed former sea floors into areas that are now dry land. Marine fossils consequently occur today in locations situated far from the modern coastline.

The Pliocene deposits of the Nicosia District are especially important for the study of fossil marine molluscs. The excellent preservation of even extremely small shells allows researchers to examine fine morphological characteristics.

Agrokipia as the Type Locality

The specimens of Bela konstantinoui originated from a Pliocene deposit near Agrokipia, in the Nicosia District.

This area is the type locality of the species—the place from which the material used for its formal scientific description originated.

Accurately recording a type locality is essential because it connects the species to a particular geological deposit and geographical area. It also permits future investigations to search for additional specimens and study the associated fossil fauna.

Importance of the Discovery

The description of Bela konstantinoui adds another species to the fossil marine fauna of Cyprus and expands our knowledge of the evolution of the family Mangeliidae in the eastern Mediterranean.

Its presence assists researchers in reconstructing the biodiversity, environmental conditions and biogeographical relationships of the Pliocene sea that once covered the area of present-day Nicosia.

The discovery also demonstrates that even very small fossils may possess considerable scientific value. A shell measuring only a few millimetres can represent a species that remained unknown to science for millions of years.
