- Common reed

Το Flora of Cyprus χρησιμοποιεί την επιστημονική γραφή Phragmites australis (Cav.) Steud. Trin. ex Steud.
Σύμφωνα με το Flora of Cyprus – a dynamic checklist, το είδος είναι:

A characteristic plant of Cyprus wetlands
Phragmites australis is a tall perennial grass that forms dense reedbeds in wetlands, along water margins, in riverbeds and in other places where the ground remains wet or is periodically flooded.
In Cyprus it is an indigenous, non-endemic element of the flora. Its reedbeds are among the island’s most recognizable wetland vegetation types and provide shelter, nesting sites and feeding habitat for many animal species.
Common names
The established English common name is:
- Common reed
The general word “reed” may be applied to several unrelated reed-like plants and does not always provide a reliable identification of this particular species.
Classification
- Kingdom: Plantae
- Clade: Tracheophytes
- Clade: Angiosperms
- Clade: Monocots
- Order: Poales
- Family: Poaceae
- Subfamily: Arundinoideae
- Tribe: Arundineae
- Genus: Phragmites
- Species: Phragmites australis (Cav.) Steud.
The Flora of Cyprus uses the scientific authorship Phragmites australis (Cav.) Steud. Some international taxonomic sources give the fuller authorship as Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud. This difference concerns the bibliographic citation of the authors and does not represent a different species.
Origin of the scientific name
The name Phragmites derives from the Greek word phragma, meaning a fence or barrier, and refers to the dense, almost impenetrable stands that the plant can form.
The Latin epithet australis means “southern”. The species was originally described by the Spanish botanist Antonio José Cavanilles as Arundo australis and was later transferred to the genus Phragmites.
Description
Phragmites australis is a robust perennial grass, commonly growing approximately 1.5–4 metres tall. Under especially favourable conditions it may become even taller.
The stems, usually called reeds or culms, are erect, firm and generally hollow between the nodes. New aerial shoots are produced annually from an extensive underground rhizome system.
The leaves are long, flat and lance-shaped, with rough margins and a prominent central vein. The blade gradually narrows towards its tip. Leaves are arranged alternately along the culm and move characteristically in the wind.
Inflorescence
The inflorescence is a large, dense and highly branched panicle. When young it may have a purplish or brownish-purple colour, later becoming brown, silver-grey or yellowish.
The numerous small spikelets bear long silky hairs. As the inflorescence matures, it develops the soft and feathery appearance characteristic of reedbeds in late summer and autumn.
Pollination takes place mainly through the wind.
Rhizomes and spread
One of the species’ most important features is its powerful underground rhizome network. Rhizomes spread horizontally through the soil or mud and produce new aerial shoots.
A stand can consequently expand over a large area. Many apparently separate stems within a reedbed may belong to the same genetic clone.
The species also reproduces by seed. Nevertheless, vegetative reproduction through rhizomes and detached plant fragments is often particularly important in the establishment and expansion of reedbeds.
Habitat
Phragmites australis mainly grows in:
- marshes and seasonally wet ground,
- lake and reservoir margins,
- riverbeds and river mouths,
- irrigation channels and drainage ditches,
- brackish coastal wetlands,
- springs and other permanently or periodically wet places.
It tolerates considerable fluctuations in water level and can grow in both freshwater and mildly brackish conditions. It is not, however, a completely submerged aquatic plant. Its rhizomes are normally rooted in saturated soil or shallow water while its stems rise above the surface.
Distribution in Cyprus
According to the Flora of Cyprus – a dynamic checklist, the species is:
- indigenous to Cyprus,
- not endemic,
- a geophyte and hemicryptophyte,
- recorded from sea level to approximately 650 metres.
It has been recorded from the Flora of Cyprus phytogeographical divisions 2A, 3B, 4B, 5A, 6B, 7B and 8B. These codes represent the geographical divisions used by the dynamic checklist and not individual localities.
On the island it occurs in natural and artificial wetlands, along rivers and streams, around reservoirs, in drainage and irrigation channels and in wet coastal areas.
Flowering period in Cyprus
The Flora of Cyprus records a flowering period extending from June to October.
Dry inflorescences and dead culms may remain standing throughout much of the winter, long after flowering and fruit production have ended.
Ecological importance of reedbeds
Reedbeds are valuable wildlife habitats. Their dense structure provides:
- shelter and nesting sites for wetland and waterside birds,
- cover for amphibians, reptiles and small mammals,
- habitat for many invertebrates,
- protected areas for young fish in suitable wetlands.
Roots and rhizomes bind wet soils and may reduce erosion along water margins. Dense stands also slow water movement and trap suspended particles and organic material.
Water purification
The species is widely used in constructed wetlands and wastewater-treatment systems. Plants, substrate and microorganisms around the roots operate together as a complex biological system.
Reeds can contribute to the retention of solid particles and the removal of part of the nutrients and other substances present in water. Purification is not carried out by the plant alone but through the combined activity of vegetation, soil and microbial communities.
Management of dense stands
Despite its considerable ecological value, Phragmites australis can expand very rapidly under certain conditions. Increased nutrient availability, altered water flow and the abandonment of traditional wetland management can promote the development of very dense, nearly single-species stands.
Such growth may reduce areas of open water and smaller wetland plant communities. The accumulation of large quantities of dry vegetation may also increase the risk and intensity of fire during the dry season.
Reedbed management should be based on the conservation objectives of the particular wetland. Generalized destruction is not appropriate because it may remove important wildlife habitat.
Global distribution and genetic lineages
Phragmites australis is one of the world’s most widespread wetland grasses. It occurs across large parts of Europe, Asia, Africa, the Americas and Oceania.
Its populations are not genetically uniform. Several phylogeographical lineages exist, and some have been transported by people into regions where they did not previously occur. A lineage may therefore be native and ecologically important in one region but introduced and highly expansive in another.
The term “invasive”, applied to particular lineages on other continents, should not automatically be transferred to the species in Cyprus. The Flora of Cyprus records it as indigenous.
Traditional and modern uses
Reeds of the genus Phragmites have been used for centuries in many parts of the world for:
- roofing and light fencing,
- mats, baskets and other woven objects,
- pipes and simple musical instruments,
- plant supports and agricultural applications,
- pulp or biomass production,
- constructed wetlands and water treatment.
These uses differ among countries and traditions. They should not all be presented automatically as documented traditional Cypriot uses without a specific historical source.
Identification and similar plants
Phragmites australis can be confused with other tall wetland grasses, particularly species of Arundo. The common name “reed” is frequently used for several different plants.
The Flora of Cyprus also records the related Phragmites frutescens on the island. Not every tall reedbed should therefore be identified automatically as Phragmites australis. Reliable separation requires examination of the inflorescence, spikelets, ligules, leaves and other morphological characters.
Conservation status in Cyprus
Phragmites australis is not included among the threatened plants in the Red Data Book of the Flora of Cyprus. It remains widespread in suitable wet habitats.
Its long-term survival is closely connected with wetland conservation. Drainage, pollution, altered water flow, excessive abstraction and fire can seriously modify the structure and ecological function of reedbeds.
