Bird Hide at Athalassa Lake – Cyprus

Text by George Konstantinou.

The bird hide at Athalassa Lake is situated on the shore of the lake within Athalassa National Forest Park, south of Nicosia, and is one of the capital's most important purpose-built birdwatching points. The Department of Forests officially lists the bird observation point at Athalassa Dam among the facilities of the National Forest Park, together with its Environmental Information and Education Centre, walking and cycling paths, picnic areas and forest botanical garden.

The hide is a wooden structure positioned directly at the water's edge and reached by a narrow wooden walkway. Its enclosed design enables visitors to watch and photograph birds with greater discretion, reducing direct human presence along the shoreline. It overlooks the open water and opposite banks and is particularly suitable for observing waterbirds, waders and migratory species.

Importance for birdwatching

Athalassa Lake is the largest and most important wetland in the Nicosia area and provides refuge for a large number of bird species. BirdLife Cyprus has repeatedly used the hide as a meeting point for organised birdwatching, bird-ringing and environmental-education activities, including World Wetlands Day and EuroBirdwatch events.

The site is particularly valuable during spring and autumn migration and in winter, when many waterbirds use the lake. Species that BirdLife Cyprus lists among those that may be observed at Athalassa include Eurasian Coot (Fulica atra), Common Moorhen (Gallinula chloropus), Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), Northern Shoveler (Spatula clypeata), Eurasian Teal (Anas crecca), Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea), Little Egret (Egretta garzetta), Spur-winged Lapwing (Vanellus spinosus) and Common Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis), together with many passerines and other species.

The hide is especially valuable because it lies within a large urban and peri-urban green area. Athalassa National Forest Park covers approximately 840 hectares and contains a combination of woodland, open habitats and wetland environments immediately adjacent to Nicosia. The observation point therefore provides residents, school groups, families, naturalists and wildlife photographers with an accessible opportunity to experience wild birds close to the capital.

Environmental education

The hide is not used solely for individual birdwatching. BirdLife Cyprus has organised numerous public activities there involving telescopes, binoculars, bird identification guides, ringing demonstrations and educational activities for children and adults. During a 2021 event, for example, participants gathered on the General Hospital side of the lake, just a few metres before the bird hide, for organised birdwatching.

These activities reinforce the educational value of the observation point. Visitors can learn how to identify birds, how to use binoculars and telescopes and why wetlands are important for migratory and wintering species. Observing from a designated hide also helps reduce unnecessary approach to birds along the lake shore.

Location and access

The hide is located on the side of the park approached from the Latsia entrance, close to Nicosia General Hospital. BirdLife Cyprus specifically identifies this entrance when directing participants to birdwatching activities at the hide.

The mapped position identified as Bird Observation Point beside Athalassa Lake is:

Google Maps:

The two birdwatching hides of Oroklini Lake – Cyprus

Text by George Konstantinou.

Oroklini Lake, in Larnaca District, has two purpose-built birdwatching hides, one on the northern and one on the southern side of the wetland. The two hides were created as part of the LIFE Oroklini project, which was implemented to restore, protect and manage this important wetland. Today they form an important part of the site's environmental-awareness infrastructure, allowing visitors, birdwatchers, wildlife photographers and school groups to observe the lake's wildlife without entering the sensitive wetland habitat.

The LIFE Oroklini project began in January 2012. Its partners were the Game and Fauna Service as lead beneficiary, BirdLife Cyprus as project coordinator, the Department of Environment, the Department of Forests and Voroklini Community Council. Actions included fencing the wetland to reduce disturbance from vehicles, water-level management, removal of invasive alien plants, planting native vegetation and creating nesting islands. Visitor facilities, including the two birdwatching hides, were developed at the same time.

The hides are particularly valuable because Oroklini Lake is a small but exceptionally important wetland. It forms part of the Natura 2000 network and is designated as a Special Protection Area for birds. It is particularly important for the Black-winged Stilt (Himantopus himantopus) and Spur-winged Lapwing (Vanellus spinosus), both of which breed at the site. Around 190 bird species have been recorded at the lake, making it an important birdwatching location throughout the year, particularly during migration and winter.

Oroklini Lake North Hide

The North Hide is situated on the northern side of Oroklini Lake and is the main spacious, elevated observation hide. From here visitors have an open view towards the northern section of the wetland and can watch birds from an elevated position without approaching or disturbing them.

The hide provides good views across open water, islands, muddy margins and low wetland vegetation. Depending on the season and water level, visitors may observe waterbirds, waders, ducks, herons, flamingos and migrating species. Black-winged Stilt and Spur-winged Lapwing are among the site's most important breeding species, while during winter and migration the composition of the bird community can change considerably.

A visitor information facility was also established on the northern side of the wetland through the LIFE Oroklini project. The North Hide therefore serves not only as a birdwatching location but also as an important point for environmental education and for introducing visitors to the wetland.

North Hide coordinates: 34.9708, 33.6547

Google Maps:
https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=34.9708%2C33.6547

Oroklini Lake South Hide

The South Hide is situated on the southern side of Oroklini Lake and provides a different perspective over the wetland. From this observation point visitors can see a large part of the main lake basin, including open water, shallow areas and islands created and managed to improve breeding conditions for birds.

The southern section differs from the northern part of the lake and includes areas with higher salinity. Depending on season and hydrological conditions, Black-winged Stilts, Spur-winged Lapwings and numerous other waders and waterbirds can be observed from the hide. The islands provide important relatively secure resting and nesting areas, particularly when water levels create suitable conditions.

The South Hide is especially useful because its field of view complements that of the North Hide. Oroklini Lake changes considerably through the year, and bird distribution depends on water levels and salinity, the extent of exposed mud, vegetation and season. Visiting both hides can therefore provide different observations of the same wetland.

South Hide coordinates: 34.9639, 33.6553

Google Maps:
https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=34.9639%2C33.6553

Birdwatching and wetland protection

The two hides perform a dual function. They allow the public to experience the rich birdlife of Oroklini Lake while at the same time directing visitors towards designated observation points and reducing disturbance within the wetland itself. This is especially important during the breeding season, when birds nesting on the ground or on low islands can be particularly vulnerable to human disturbance.

The hides are also an excellent example of how a protected natural area can be used for environmental education and responsible wildlife observation. The restoration of Oroklini Lake and the creation of visitor facilities received recognition at European level when LIFE Oroklini was selected as one of the Best LIFE Projects in 2018.

Το 2015 άρχισε το έργο “Akrotiri Marsh Restoration: a flagship wetland in the Cyprus SBAs”, χρηματοδοτούμενο από το Darwin Initiative.

https://maps.app.goo.gl/sTq6kTASYUDAHLKw7

Akrotiri Marsh – Phasouri Reed-beds

Text by George Konstantinou.

Akrotiri Marsh, also known as Phasouri Reed-beds, is one of the most important wetlands in Cyprus and an especially important site for birds, plants and the island's wider biodiversity. Situated on the Akrotiri Peninsula in Limassol District, it forms part of the Akrotiri wetland complex, the largest natural wetland complex in Cyprus. The Marsh itself covers approximately 150 hectares and consists mainly of freshwater marsh, extensive reed-beds, wet grassland, open-water areas, ditches and seasonally inundated ground.

The ecological importance of Akrotiri Marsh cannot be considered separately from the rest of the peninsula. The wider area includes Akrotiri Salt Lake, Makria Lake or Zakaki Marsh, the coastal pools and salt flats of Lady's Mile, sand dunes, scrub, agricultural land and other wetland and coastal habitats. This exceptional habitat diversity is a major reason for the outstanding ornithological importance of the peninsula, particularly during spring and autumn migration. More than 300 bird species and over 800 plant species have been recorded from the wider peninsula.

Importance for birds

The reed-beds, shallow-water areas and wet grasslands provide feeding, resting, sheltering and breeding habitat for numerous species. Characteristic birds highlighted for Akrotiri Marsh include Ferruginous Duck (Aythya nyroca), Little Bittern (Ixobrychus minutus), Spur-winged Lapwing (Vanellus spinosus), Black-winged Stilt (Himantopus himantopus), Jack Snipe (Lymnocryptes minimus), Bluethroat (Luscinia svecica), Moustached Warbler (Acrocephalus melanopogon), Red-footed Falcon (Falco vespertinus), Western Yellow Wagtail (Motacilla flava) and Black Francolin (Francolinus francolinus). The species composition and numbers change considerably according to season, migration and water levels.

The site is particularly important for the Ferruginous Duck, as Akrotiri Marsh is among the few breeding localities for this species in Cyprus. Seven open pools were therefore created during restoration works, partly to improve breeding conditions for Ferruginous Ducks. A shallow scrape was also created to provide suitable habitat for species including Black-winged Stilt and Spur-winged Lapwing.

Vegetation, wetland habitat and traditional grazing

Akrotiri Marsh is not simply a continuous reed-bed. Much of its ecological value depends on maintaining a mosaic of reeds, open water and wet grassland. Excessive reed expansion can reduce the open habitats required by particular birds and plants, making vegetation management an important component of wetland conservation.

A distinctive feature of the landscape is the presence of free-ranging cattle of the local Cyprus breed. Grazing is a traditional activity at the site but also serves as an important habitat-management tool. By controlling excessive reed and other vegetation growth, cattle help maintain more open wet grasslands and a varied mosaic of habitats.

Restoration and management

In 2015 the project “Akrotiri Marsh Restoration: a flagship wetland in the Cyprus SBAs”, funded by the Darwin Initiative, was launched. BirdLife Cyprus was the lead partner, working with the Akrotiri Environmental Education Centre and the RSPB. Running from April 2015 to March 2017, its principal objective was to restore the wetland and recreate a more varied mosaic of habitats.

Management works included ditch dredging, the creation of open pools and shallow-water areas, reed clearing and the installation of water-control structures. Baseline studies were also carried out on important breeding birds and the fish Aphanius fasciatus, while water quality and bird and plant richness and abundance were monitored. A water-management regime and a long-term site-management plan were also prepared.

Management continued through subsequent initiatives. Under Darwin Plus project DPLUS141, which ran from 2021 to 2024, actions at Akrotiri Marsh included clearing important drainage channels, promoting sustainable grazing and protecting rare and endemic plants. More recent work has also examined changes in the hydrology and ecology of the peninsula's wetlands, as alterations to the hydrological balance are an important issue for their long-term ecological functioning.

Protection status

Akrotiri Marsh lies within the exceptionally important wetland complex of the Akrotiri Peninsula. The peninsula's wetlands are designated as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance, while the area is recognized as an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area (IBA). Protected areas equivalent to a Special Protection Area (SPA) and Special Area of Conservation (SAC) have also been designated under Sovereign Base Area legislation.

Despite this protection, the ecosystem faces significant pressures. Recognized issues include changes to the hydrological balance, the continuing need for vegetation and water management, increasing visitor pressure and development pressure in the wider peninsula. Maintaining the ecological functioning of the entire wetland complex is therefore essential for the long-term conservation of Akrotiri Marsh.

The two birdwatching hides at Akrotiri Marsh

There are two purpose-built birdwatching hides at Akrotiri Marsh. They were created as part of the restoration project to allow visitors to observe wildlife while reducing disturbance. Visitor walkways and information signs were also provided. A road follows the edge of the marsh and can be carefully travelled on foot or by vehicle.

1. Akrotiri Marsh Tower Hide

The Akrotiri Marsh Tower Hide is the tall, elevated observation hide situated at the eastern end of Akrotiri Marsh. Its height provides a broader view across the reed-beds, open areas and wetland landscape, allowing visitors to observe birds and the marsh without entering sensitive wetland habitat.

Google Maps – official location of the Tower Hide:
https://maps.app.goo.gl/JxebkDoC4RbLhtsG9

This location is specifically identified as Akrotiri Marsh Tower Hide in the official Visit Akrotiri/Darwin Plus visitor-monitoring documentation.

2. Akrotiri Marsh Ground Hide

The Akrotiri Marsh Ground Hide is the second, lower-level observation hide and provides a different perspective over the wetland. It is situated farther west than the Tower Hide, approximately one-third of the way along the marsh road when travelling west. A walkway provides access towards the hide, helping visitors approach the observation point without unnecessary movement through the wetland.

Google Maps – official location of the Ground Hide:
https://maps.app.goo.gl/sTq6kTASYUDAHLKw7

The location is officially identified as Akrotiri Marsh Ground Hide by Visit Akrotiri/Darwin Plus. Automatic visitor-counter data collected between October 2022 and September 2023 showed that the Ground Hide received higher visitation than both the Tower Hide and the Zakaki Marsh hide during that monitoring period.

The two hides complement each other. The Tower Hide offers an elevated and wider view of the landscape, while the Ground Hide provides observation from a lower level towards the wetland and its vegetation. Purpose-built hides are valuable not only for birdwatching and wildlife photography but also for directing visitors towards appropriate observation points and reducing uncontrolled movement through sensitive wetland habitat.

Birdwatching Hide at Zakaki Marsh

The birdwatching hide is situated at Zakaki Marsh, also known as Makria Lake, on the eastern side of the important Akrotiri Peninsula wetland complex, close to Lady's Mile and Limassol.

Makria Lake is the remnant of a formerly larger wetland and, despite its relatively small size and the considerable pressures from surrounding development, it remains an important site for birds, particularly migratory species.

The hide was created to enable visitors, naturalists, photographers and birdwatchers to observe the wetland's birds while causing as little disturbance as possible. It was renovated as part of the MedIsWet project and is used for both organised and independent birdwatching.

The serious problem with the reeds

A serious and recurring problem at the birdwatching hide is the extremely dense growth of reeds immediately in front of it.

The reeds grow so vigorously that they obstruct the view across the wetland. When vegetation reaches the viewing openings, birdwatchers can effectively lose their view of the open water and of birds situated behind the reedbed.

This is not an occasional problem. Vigorous reed regeneration means that even after cutting, the vegetation can quickly return. Technical assessments concerning the management of Makria Lake have noted that simple cutting creates open areas only temporarily and that more systematic intervention would be required to maintain open water over the longer term.

This is particularly problematic because a hide specifically constructed for observing the wetland loses much of its usefulness when the view is completely obstructed by reeds.

I have personally observed this problem repeatedly at the site. From time to time, foreign birdwatchers cut the reeds themselves in front of the hide so that they can see and observe the birds. This illustrates the severity of the visibility problem, although management of a sensitive wetland should be carried out systematically and in an ecologically appropriate manner rather than depending on occasional interventions by visitors.

Reed management

The need to manage the reedbed has also been officially recognised.

Mechanical reed clearance has been carried out in front of the existing hide as part of conservation projects. A hydrological study of Makria Lake, an ecological assessment and a review of different habitat management and restoration options have also been undertaken.

Experience from this work has shown that the vigorous growth of the reeds allows vegetation to recover within a relatively short period following clearance. For a longer-lasting effect, more intensive removal of reed rhizomes and deepening of some pools have been identified as possible requirements.

Reeds themselves, however, are an important component of the ecosystem. They provide habitat and cover for many species and contribute to water filtration. The objective should therefore not be their uncontrolled removal, but appropriate management that maintains a mosaic of reedbed and open water for the benefit of both wildlife and wildlife observation.

Importance of Makria Lake for birds

Makria Lake is particularly important during the spring and autumn migration periods, although birds use the wetland at different times throughout the year.

Herons, ducks, waders and many smaller reedbed-associated birds can be observed at the site.

Characteristic species recorded in the area include Ferruginous Duck (Aythya nyroca), Purple Heron (Ardea purpurea), Squacco Heron (Ardeola ralloides), Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea), Moustached Warbler (Acrocephalus melanopogon), Eurasian Reed Warbler (Acrocephalus scirpaceus) and Spur-winged Lapwing (Vanellus spinosus).

The site is also important for the Ferruginous Duck, a species of international conservation concern.

During late summer, large numbers of swallows and swifts may gather in the area and use the reedbeds for roosting.

The wider Akrotiri Peninsula

The importance of Zakaki Marsh is increased by its position within the wider Akrotiri wetland complex, one of the most important areas for birds in Cyprus.

The peninsula contains a variety of habitats, including Akrotiri Salt Lake, freshwater wetlands, reedbeds, saltmarshes, sand dunes, coastal habitats, scrub and agricultural areas.

This diversity of habitats explains the area's exceptional ornithological richness. More than 300 bird species have been recorded across the wider Akrotiri Peninsula.

Pressures on the wetland

Zakaki Marsh represents only a remnant of the larger wetland that existed in the past.

Its proximity to the port and other developments has placed considerable pressure on the area. Protecting and properly managing what remains is therefore particularly important.

Vegetation management must simultaneously preserve the ecological functions of the reedbed and maintain the open-water areas required by many wetland species.

Regular maintenance of the area immediately in front of the birdwatching hide is also necessary. When the reeds are allowed to completely obstruct the view, this creates a serious problem for birdwatchers and other visitors who come specifically to experience and observe the area's rich birdlife.

The hide can serve as an important facility for environmental education and public awareness, provided that it is properly maintained and remains functional without compromising the ecological integrity of the wetland.
