Το χωριό Λιβάδια στη Χερσόνησο της Καρπασίας - Livadia Village - Cyprus
The church of Panagia Kyra (Our Lady the Virgin Mary ) is one of the many world heritage sites situated in the Turkish occupied area in north Cyprus. All Greek Orthodox Christian sites ( except three which have been turned into museums) have been plundered and pillaged after the Turkish invasion in 1974. Many of them are Byzantine monuments of unique beauty and historical value. The church of Panagia Kyra is situated near the village of Livadia in the Karpas Peninsula, however it belongs to the village of Komi Kebir. It's a Byzantine church dating from the 12th century but it possesses 6th century mosaic figures of the Virgin Mary which indicate that an older church existed which had been later rebuild. The church of Panagia Kyra was covered with byzantine murals, but almost all of them have been destroyed by the Turks. Around the church there are also ruins of an ancient city, which dates back to the Hellenistic period. This particular church is fortunate enough to still stand, and it has not been destroyed like many other ones, but it is falling apart and is in immediate need for preservation.
