Στο Lepiforum αναγνωρίζονται επίσης τα υποείδη A. australis pascuea και A. australis zeelandica.

Feathered Brindle – Aporophyla australis (Boisduval, [1829]) – Cyprus

TEXT AND PHOTOS: GEORGE KONSTANTINOU – LATSIA, 4/12/2014

Aporophyla australis, commonly known as the Feathered Brindle, is a moth belonging to the family Noctuidae. It occurs in western and southern Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, including Cyprus. It is not endemic to Cyprus. The photographic record from Latsia on 4 December 2014 documents the presence of an adult in early winter.

Description and identification

The wingspan is approximately 36–42 mm. The forewings are usually whitish-grey to grey, with brown or darker areas, fine transverse lines and dark wedge-shaped markings near the outer margin. The veins and outlines of the characteristic spots may stand out against the paler background. Colouration shows considerable geographical and individual variation, with some individuals being much darker and less distinctly marked.

The hindwings are predominantly white in males and more brownish-grey in females. Compared with the usually almost black Aporophyla nigra, typical A. australis has a paler and more variegated forewing pattern.

The caterpillar is described as yellowish-green, often with a reddish tinge along the back. It may bear dark V-shaped markings along the dorsal line, additional lateral markings and a yellowish line along the spiracular region. The head is green with brown speckling.

Habitats and behaviour

In Britain, the species is particularly associated with coastal habitats, including sand dunes and shingle beaches. In the Mediterranean, it is also recorded in open scrub, rocky pastures and areas with sparse woodland cover. Photographically documented sites in Crete reach approximately 1,000 m, demonstrating that its occurrence is not restricted to the coastal zone. Adults are attracted to light and sugary baits.

Life cycle and flight period

The species overwinters as a caterpillar, which develops slowly during winter and continues growing in spring. Pupation occurs beneath moss or in the soil. In Britain, adults occur mainly from August to October, with most records in September and October.

In the eastern Mediterranean, the flight period may extend later. Published observations from southwestern Anatolia report adults from early October to early January. Cyprus records include October and November, together with the December photographic record from Latsia. These dates document seasonal adult occurrence but do not, by themselves, establish the number of generations on the island.

Host plants

The caterpillar is polyphagous and feeds on various low-growing plants. Documented hosts include grasses in the Poaceae and sea campion, named Silene maritima in the literature, belonging to the Caryophyllaceae.

The Biological Records Centre host-plant database also records Stellaria media for the subspecies Aporophyla australis pascuea, with records from Britain and Ireland. Other published host records mention Carex in the Cyperaceae and Cichorium. These associations concern literature from different regions and are not all Cypriot observations.

Taxonomic history and conservation status

The species was originally described as Xylina australis. The Latin epithet australis means “southern”. Its synonymy includes Xylina scriptura Freyer, 1838, Xylina ingenua Freyer, 1848, and Xylophasia orientalis Herrich-Schäffer, [1850]. Lepiforum also recognises the subspecies A. australis pascuea and A. australis zeelandica.

The 2026 European Red List of Moths classifies the species as Least Concern (LC) in both Europe and the EU27. These are regional assessments rather than a separate assessment of the Cypriot population.
