Unidentified Cicada – Cicadidae sp. – Cyprus
Text by George Konstantinou.
The cicada shown here, belonging to the family Cicadidae, remains unidentified to species level. I first found it on 11 August 2015 at Potamia village in the Nicosia District of Cyprus, where I photographed it and subsequently published the record on Biodiversity of Cyprus as Cicada sp.
Despite my efforts to determine its identity, I have not been able to establish with confidence which species it represents. I therefore retain the record as Cicadidae sp., rather than assigning a scientific name that cannot be reliably supported.
Of particular interest is the fact that five years later, in 2020, I found the same unidentified cicada again at exactly the same locality in Potamia. These two observations, made at precisely the same location five years apart, constitute an interesting personal record of the repeated occurrence of this particular form in the area. Without examination of appropriate diagnostic morphological characters, genital structures or other suitable evidence, however, identification to species level based solely on general external appearance would not be scientifically secure.
Cicadas belong to the order Hemiptera, group Auchenorrhyncha, superfamily Cicadoidea and family Cicadidae. They are phytophagous insects equipped with piercing-sucking mouthparts. Adults live above ground on vegetation and obtain fluids from plants, whereas the nymphs spend most of their lives underground, feeding in association with the subterranean parts of plants.
Their life cycle involves incomplete metamorphosis: egg → nymph → adult. Females deposit their eggs in plant tissues. After hatching, the young nymphs reach the ground and burrow into the soil. They possess powerful forelegs adapted for digging and pass through successive nymphal stages underground. Once development is complete, the mature nymph emerges from the soil, climbs onto vegetation or another firm surface and undergoes its final moult, producing the winged adult.
One of the most characteristic features of Cicadidae is the sound produced by males through specialized organs known as tymbals. The calling song primarily serves a reproductive function and, in many cicada groups, provides extremely valuable information for distinguishing closely related species. In the case of this unidentified Potamia cicada, a future recording of the calling song of a male from the same locality could therefore provide important additional evidence towards establishing its identity.
For the present, this record should remain open with regard to species identification. My two observations, in 2015 and 2020 at exactly the same locality, are worth preserving as documented records so that the material can be reconsidered in the future as knowledge of the cicada fauna of Cyprus improves.
