The Monastery of Saint Catherine of Sinai situated in Egypt, had four annexes (land or property belonging to it) in Cyprus. The first and the biggest is the Monastery of Agia Paraskevi (Saint Friday) situated a the village of Vasilia in the province of Kyrenia. The second is the monastery of the Virgin Mary of Eleousa, which is found in the middle of the big peninsula of Karpasia. The third was situated at the Ha-Potami river, in the bed of the river between the village of Kouklia and the Ranti government forest. The fourth annex was found near Psevdas, a village in the province of Larnaca. The monastery of Ayia Paraskevi, known also as the monastery of Vasilia, or the monastery of Sinai, was the only one of the four monasteries belonging to the Monastery of Sinai in Cyprus, that survived and was functioning up until 1974. In the middle of the 19th century, the monks found a big water-spring near the monastery. One from them, the monk-priest Amvrosios, was for the conditions of that time, a protagonist in Cypriot agriculture. He possessed not only books on agriculture, but also studied and applied his knowledge in practice. He build a reservoir at the source of the water, which was very high up on the mountain, and created a water distribution system. This way all the land belonging to the monastery was irrigated abundantly even in far away regions situated at the foot of the mountain or farther down the plain. With this water distribution system, the monastery accomplished high incomes. After the Turkish invasion in 1974, the monastery and this system of irrigation, have been destroyed without mercy by the Turks and today they are found in ruins
