Πέντε περίπου χιλιόμετρα ανατολικά του χωριού Ακανθού, ο ναός της Παναγίας Περγαμηνιώτισσας, στον τύπο του εγγεγραμμένου σταυροειδούς με τρούλο, είναι κτισμένος στα ερείπια τρίκλιτης παλαιοχριστιανικής βασιλικής. Αρχικά όλος ο ναός ήταν διακοσμημένος με τοιχογραφίες, από τις οποίες σήμερα σώζονται ελάχιστες, σε δύο στρώματα. Οι τοιχογραφίες του νεότερου στρώματος μπορούν να χρονολογηθούν στον 12ο αιώνα και του παλαιότερου, κατά συνέπεια και ο ίδιος ο ναός, στον 11ο αιώνα. Μετά την τουρκική κατοχή έχουν υποστεί σημαντικές καταστροφές. Σήμερα οι πόρτες τις εκκλησίας έχουν κτιστεί από το κατοχικό καθεστώς και κανείς δεν μπορεί να μπει μέσα. Η καταστροφή στο εσωτερικό είναι ολοκληρωτική. Τίποτα δεν έχει μείνει όρθιο, όπως διαπιστώθηκε κατά την είσοδο του ναού από την κατεστραμμένη οροφή του. Σημαντικές τοιχογραφίες του 12ου αιώνα που κάλυπταν τους τοίχους της εκκλησίας, έχουν καταστραφεί. Τμήματα τοιχογραφιών, όπως αυτό που παρουσίαζε την Aγία Άννα προσευχόμενη, έχουν αποκοπεί με σκοπό να πουληθούν στις αγορές του εξωτερικού. Μερικά από τα κομμάτια έχουν ανεβρεθεί από τη γερμανική Αστυνομία στο διαμέρισμα του Τούρκου λαθρέμπορου Αϊτίν Ντικμέν.
Five kilometers east of the village Akanthou, the church of Panagia Pergaminiotissa, of the costumary cross with a dome type, is built on the ruins of an early Christian three-aisled basilica. Initially, the entire church was decorated with frescoes, of which little still remains and that is covered in two layers. The murals of the later layer can be dated to the 12th century and that of the earlier, and consequently the church itself, to the 11th century. After the Turkish occupation they have suffered significant damage. Presently, the doors of the church have been built in by the occupying army and nobody can get inside. The destruction of the interior is complete. Nothing is left standing, as can be seen by entering the church from its damaged roof. Important 12th century frescoes covering the walls of the church have been destroyed. Parts of the murals, such as that presenting Saint Anne praying, were cut off from the wall in order to be sold in foreign markets. Some of the pieces have been retrieved by the German police from the apartment of the Turkish antiques smuggler Aydin Dikmen.
