Η Μονή της Παναγίας Ελεούσας του Σινά στη Καρπασία - The Monastery of Panayia Eleousa of Sinai in Karpasia - Cyprus

The Monastery of Saint Catherine of Sinai situated in Egypt, had four annexes (land or property belonging to it) in Cyprus. One of them is the monastery of the Virgin Mary ( Panayia) Eleousa, which is found in the big peninsula of Karpasia near the village of Rizokarpaso. The small 15th-century church of the monastery used to be whitewashed with a decorated doorway, and inside it had frescoes which were covered in whitewash. After the Turkish invasion, the monastery was deserted. Today its interior has been totally destroyed with no frescos remaining , and is empty except for a few wooden pews and the shell of the iconostasis. The doors and windows have been removed and birds and insects have moved in. The monks' cells, which were build in more recent times, stand in a row a little farther from the church. The Turks have converted it into a stable. The Monastery been deserted and abandoned to the ravages of time until the Turks decided to turn it into a motel and restuarant! During years of drought the residents of Rizokarpaso used to carry in solemn procession the icon of the Virgin Mary of Eleousa for litany to Rizokarpaso. It was the custom for the procession to always pass through the Turkish Cypriot village of Galinoporni, where there was a byzantine church dedicated to the mother of the Virgin Mary, Saint Anna. The inhabitants of Galinoporni even if they had become Muslim, did not seem to forget this centuries old custom, which was connected with the ethnic origin and the religion of their ancestors. Thus until 1963, whenever there was a drought, and the residents of Rizokarpaso passed in procession from the village of Galinoporni carring the icon of the Virgin Mary, its inhabitants run to take part in the whole ceremony. They received the procession at the entrance of their village and offered food and water to the tired from walking crowd. Together they ended up at the center of the village where stood the ruins of the church of Saint Anna. There, in front of the icon of the Virgin, which was put in the ruins of the church, both the priest and the muazin prayed together. The Greek-speaking Muslims of Galinoporni and the Greek Orthodox of Rizokarpaso also prayed together at that same time. Then after the prayer, the residents of Galinoporni accompanied the procession with the icon of the Virgin until the exit of their village, which was directed to Rizokarpaso. Πηγή http://noctoc-noctoc.blogspot.com.cy/
