Sinta (Greek: Σίντα) is a village in Cyprus.

Το χωριό Σίντα ήταν από τα λίγα χωριά της επαρχίας Αμμοχώστου που πριν το 1974 κατοικείτο από Τούρκους. Βρίσκεται εικοσι οκτώ περίπου χιλιόμετρα από την πολή της Αμμοχώστου. Κατά το 1571 που ήρθαν οι Τούρκοι και υποδούλωσαν το νησί, το χωριό Σίντα ήταν χριστιανικό. Το χωριό ιδρύθηκε από Έλληνες μετανάστες από την Ελλάδα και τη Μικρά Ασία, το 1400 - 1200 π.Χ. μετά την ανακάλυψη του χαλκού. Το όνομα Σίντα είναι το αρχικό όνομα της πανάρχαιας πολιτείας Σίνδα, που βρισκόταν στην Πισιδία της Μικράς Ασίας. Στο χωριό υπάρχει σημαντικός αρχαιολογικός χώρος, ο οποίος περιλαμβάνει αριθμό τάφων που δυστυχώς συλήθηκαν από αρχαιοκάπηλους.
Το χωριό Σίντα ήταν χώρος άσκησης και λατρείας του Οσίου Θεράποντα, έναν εκ των «Τριακοσίων» Αλαμάνων αγίων προσφύγων που ήρθαν στην Κύπρο από την Παλαιστίνη γύρο στο 638 μ.Χ., μετά τη κατάκτηση των Ιεροσολύμων από τους Άραβες. Ο Κύπριος χρονογράφος του δέκατου πέμπτου αιώνα, Λεόντιος Μαχαιράς, αναφέρει τα εξής: «εις την Σίνταν ο άγιος Θεράπων...».
Κατά τα Βυζαντινά χρόνια, όμως, ίσως λόγο άγνοιας, αμάθειας, ή σύγχυσης, οι κάτοικοι της Σίντας μπέρδεψαν το τοπικό τους όσιο και ασκητή Θεράποντα, με τον Άγιο Θεράποντα, τον επίσκοπο Κύπρου. Έτσι, από την εποχή εκείνη, τιμούσαν τον δεύτερο Θεράποντα αντί τον πρώτο. Εκεί, στην Σίντα, μέχρι το 1974 υπήρχε ακόμη το ασκητήριο του Οσίου Θεράποντα, αλλά και χαλάσματα εκκλησίας αφιερωμένης στον Άγιο Θεράποντα, προφανώς το επίσκοπο Κύπρου. Τον Όσιο Θεράπων της Σίντας τιμούσαν το πιθανότερoν αρχικά και οι κάτοικοι του γειτονικού χωριού Αγκαστίνα, οι οποίοι όμως τον σύγχυσαν και αυτοί με τον Άγιο Θεράποντα, τον επίσκοπο Κύπρου. Η σύγχυση αγίων που φέρουν το ίδιο όνομα είναι ένα σύνηθες φαινόμενο στην Κύπρο. Στο χωριό Αγκαστίνα υπάρχει ναός αφιερωμένος στον Άγιο Θεράποντα, ο οποίος σήμερα έχει μετατραπεί σε στάβλο από τους Τούρκους εισβολείς.
Στο χωριό Σίντα, έως το τέλος της Φραγκοκρατίας, εορταζόταν η μνήμη του Αγίου Θαράποντα, επισκόπου Κύπρου, στις 14 Μαΐου. Την ίδια ημέρα εόρταζαν και οι κάτοικοι του χωριού Αγκαστίνα μέχρι το 1974. Δεν γνωρίζουμε πότε εόρταζε ο Όσιος Θερπάνων, ο ασκητής.

The village of Sinta was one of the few villages of Famagusta which, before 1974, were inhabited by Turks. It is located about twenty-eight kilometers from the city of Famagusta. Until 1571, when they Turks came and took over the island, the village of Sinta was Christian. The village was founded by Greek immigrants from Greece and Asia Minor, between 1400 - 1200 BC, after the discovery of copper. The name Sinta is the original name of the ancient state of Sinda, which was located at Pisidia in Asia Minor. There is a significant archaeological site at the village, which includes a number of graves which, unfortunately, were pillaged by looters.
The village of Sinta was the place of ascetic exercise and of worship of Saint Therapon, one of "Three Hundred" Alaman refugee saints who came to Cyprus from Palestine around 638 AD, after the conquest of Jerusalem by the Arabs. The Cypriot chronicler of the fifteenth century, Leontios Machairas, writes the following: "in Sinta lived Saint Therapon ...".
During the Byzantine Period, however, perhaps due to ignorance, illiteracy, or confusion, the inhabitants of Sinta mistook, their local saint and hermit Therapon, for being Saint Therapon, Bishop of Cyprus. Thus, from that period and onwards they honored the second Therapon in the place of the first. Up until 1974, the hermitage of Saint Therapon still existed in Sinta, as well as rubbles of a church dedicated to Saint Therapon, apparently the Bishop of Cyprus.
Saint Therapon of Sinta was most likely originally honored and by residents of the nearby village of Angastina, but they also confused him with Saint Therapon, Bishop of Cyprus. The confusion of saints bearing the same name is a common phenomenon in Cyprus. At the village of Angastina there is a church dedicated to Saint Therapon, which has now been turned into a stable for animals by the Turkish invaders.
In the village of Sinta, until the end of the Frankish-Venetian Period, the memory of Saint Therapon, Bishop of Cyprus, was celebrated on the 14th of May. The villagers of Angastina also celebrated on same day until 1974. We do not know when the memory of Saint Therapon, the hermit, was celebrated.
