TEXT AND PHOTOS: GEORGE KONSTANTINOU – VARIOUS LOCALITIES IN NICOSIA AND LARNACA DISTRICTS, CYPRUS.

The Bryozoa fossils presented here were found by George Konstantinou and Fani Konstantinou at various localities in Nicosia and Larnaca Districts, Cyprus. They represent fossilised remains of colonies of minute aquatic invertebrates that formed part of ancient marine ecosystems around Cyprus.

What are Bryozoa?

Bryozoa are a phylum of predominantly marine, colonial invertebrate animals. Each colony consists of numerous microscopic individuals known as zooids, which are physically connected and together form a single colonial structure.

Most zooids are less than one millimetre in size. They are suspension feeders, collecting microscopic food particles from the water with a lophophore, a crown of ciliated tentacles that produces water currents towards the mouth.

The great majority of bryozoans are marine, although freshwater species also exist. Colonies may grow on rocks, shells and other hard surfaces on the seabed.

Colony morphology

Bryozoan colonies display a remarkable diversity of forms. They may develop as thin encrusting sheets over a substrate, small branching structures, leaf-like colonies or more massive calcareous forms.

In many marine bryozoans the skeleton is calcareous. Following the death of a colony, this hard skeleton may become incorporated into marine sediments and eventually fossilised.

Well-preserved fossils can retain the numerous minute chambers occupied by the individual zooids. The morphology of these structures is particularly important in the taxonomic identification of fossil bryozoans.

Bryozoa in the fossil record of Cyprus

Bryozoans are a documented component of the fossil record of Cyprus. The Geological Survey Department of the Republic of Cyprus specifically records bryozoans among the macrofossils occurring in the reef limestones of the Terra and Koronia Members of the Pakhna Formation. Other associated fossils include corals, bivalves, gastropods, echinoids and worms.

The Pakhna Formation represents a prolonged interval of marine sedimentation during the Miocene. Its sediments accumulated in a variety of marine environments ranging from relatively deeper pelagic settings to shallower carbonate environments and reefs.

Fossil bryozoans have also been documented in scientific studies of Miocene deposits in Cyprus. Microfacies analyses of the Pakhna Formation have identified bryozoan bioclasts together with coralline red algae and larger benthic foraminifera.

The fossils from Nicosia and Larnaca

The specimens presented here come from different localities in Nicosia and Larnaca Districts and were found by George and Fani Konstantinou.

Because the material originates from several different localities, the specimens should not automatically be regarded as being of the same geological age or belonging to the same formation. Cyprus preserves marine deposits from different geological periods, and the age of each specimen depends on its precise locality and stratigraphic context.

This distinction is particularly relevant because bryozoans are also documented from the Larnaca area. Historical geological literature describing deposits around Larnaca Salt Lake records a rich marine fauna including molluscs, Serpula, echinoderms and corals, together with numerous Bryozoa and Foraminifera.

Without detailed morphological examination of the individual colonies, the specimens shown here are not assigned to genus or species. They are therefore conservatively identified as Bryozoa indet.
