TEXT AND PHOTOS: GEORGE KONSTANTINOU – ATHALASSA, NICOSIA DISTRICT, CYPRUS.

The fossil presented here was found by George Konstantinou and Fani Konstantinou at Athalassa, Nicosia District, Cyprus. It is a fossil sea urchin belonging to the genus Echinolampas Gray, 1825, a group of irregular echinoids with an extensive fossil record. The original record also identifies the specimen as Echinolampas sp.

The genus Echinolampas

Echinolampas belongs to the phylum Echinodermata, class Echinoidea and family Echinolampadidae. Echinolampas Gray, 1825 is recognised as a valid genus in modern taxonomy.

Unlike the more globular regular sea urchins, Echinolampas belongs to the irregular echinoids. Its test shows bilateral symmetry, while the positions of the mouth and anus and the characteristic arrangement of the ambulacral areas are important features for identification.

The upper surface of the test is generally domed, whereas the underside is more flattened. Five petaloid ambulacral areas on the upper surface form one of the most distinctive features of the group.

Lifestyle and palaeoenvironment

Echinolampas were benthic animals, living in close association with the seabed. The morphology of irregular echinoids reflects adaptations for life on or within mobile marine sediments.

Studies of Miocene Mediterranean echinoid assemblages show Echinolampas occurring in littoral and inner-sublittoral marine environments, together with other regular and irregular echinoids. These fossil communities are associated with a variety of substrates, including fine- and coarse-grained mobile sediments and areas with bryozoans and marine vegetation.

The occurrence of Echinolampas within a fossil-bearing deposit can therefore provide useful information about the ancient marine environment, particularly when interpreted together with the associated fossils and sediment.

Echinolampas in the Mediterranean fossil record

The genus has an extensive fossil record and is known from numerous Cenozoic marine deposits.

Species-level taxonomy of fossil Echinolampas, however, can be difficult. Modern palaeontological studies have shown that several forms historically separated as different species on the basis of geological age or relatively subtle morphological differences are difficult to distinguish reliably. Biometric analyses have even suggested that some names applied to Miocene, Pliocene, Pleistocene and Recent forms may represent very closely related or morphologically inseparable forms.

Consequently, when a fossil does not preserve all necessary diagnostic characters or has not undergone specialist examination, identification as Echinolampas sp. is preferable to an uncertain species assignment.

Echinolampas in Cyprus

The genus Echinolampas is documented in the fossil record of Cyprus.

A scientific study of the Neogene echinoid fauna of Cyprus records Echinolampas among the irregular echinoids occurring in ancient marine environments of the island. The same research demonstrates that Miocene Cyprus supported different echinoid communities ranging from shallow coastal environments to considerably deeper marine settings.

Importantly, Echinolampas is associated in the palaeoecological analysis with the shallower assemblages, in contrast to other echinoid groups documented from deeper environments.

The fossil from Athalassa

This specimen comes from Athalassa, Nicosia, and was found by George and Fani Konstantinou.

The Nicosia region contains extensive Neogene and Quaternary marine deposits with a rich fossil fauna. However, the locality name “Athalassa” alone is insufficient to assign this particular specimen with certainty to a specific geological formation or age.

For the same reason, no species-level identification is attempted. The specimen is recorded as Echinolampas sp., which is the most reliable identification supported by the available information.
