Πώς όμως ένα φυτό το οποίο δεν έχει εγκέφαλο και κυρίως μάτια, ήξερε πώς είναι μια μέλισσα ή άλλα έντομα και δημιούργησε ένα άνθος πανομοιότυπο με αυτά; Μα πως είναι δυνατό;

Το μεγάλο ερώτημα είναι, πώς είναι δυνατόν ένα φυτό η ένας μύκητας που δεν διαθέτει μάτια, εγκέφαλο, αφή και κυρίως όσφρηση, να γνωρίζει τη μυρωδιά κάποιου ζώου σε αποσύνθεση, ώστε να μπορεί να την αναπαραγάγει στο άνθος του; Και πώς γνωρίζει ότι υπάρχουν μύγες που προσελκύονται από τη μυρωδιά των ψοφιμιών για να γεννήσουν τα αβγά τους; Πώς μπορεί ένα φυτό το οποίο δεν διαθέτη όσφρηση να ξέρει πως είναι η ωραία και η άσχημη μυρωδιά;
Πώς μπορεί ένα φυτό να γνωρίζει από έντονα χρώματα, ώστε να μπορεί να δημιουργεί τα άνθη του με τόσα πολλά διαφορετικά και υπέροχα χρώματα για να προσελκύει τα έντομα; Πώς μπορεί να γνωρίζει ότι το κόκκινο ή το κίτρινο είναι από τα εντονότερα χρώματα στη φύση, αφού δεν έχει μάτια για να κοιτάξει γύρω του;

Ένα άλλο μεγάλο ερωτηματικό αφορά τα δέντρα τα οποία παράγουν γλυκούς καρπούς που μέσα τους υπάρχει ο σπόρος. Ο λόγος που έχουν γλυκιά γεύση είναι για να προσελκύουν τα πουλιά και τα ζώα να τα φάνε και να μεταφέρουν κατ’ αυτό τον τρόπο το σπόρο μακριά για διαιώνιση του είδους. Πώς ξέρει όμως ένα δέντρο ότι υπάρχουν πουλιά και ζώα και τι τους αρέσει να τρώνε;
Υπάρχουν ορισμένα φυτά τα οποία δημιούργησαν με τέτοιο τρόπο τους σπόρους τους ώστε όταν φυσά αέρας, να στροβιλίζονται η να πετούν ακριβώς όπως τα ελικόπτερα για να φυτρώνουν μακριά. Πώς μπορεί να γνωρίζει ένα φυτό τις δυνάμεις του αέρα, ώστε να μπορεί να κατασκευάσει το σπόρο με έλικες η μαλακό χνούδι για να πετά μακριά;

Μα πως γίνετε τα φυτά αυτά χωρίς να  διαθέτουν μάτια να ξέρουν ότι υπάρχουν έντομα και μάλιστα αφού διαθέτουν ρίζες να επιλέξουν να τρώνε τα έντομα; Πως έχουν δημιουργήσει την κολλητική ουσία? Και πως ήξεραν ότι τα έντομα θα κολλούσαν πάνω;
Η μόνη επαφή που έχει ένα φυτό και ένα έντομο είναι όταν καθίσει το έντομο στο φυτό. Μήπως τα φυτά έχουν αφή; Μήπως έχουν αίσθηση και κάποιου είδους νοημοσύνη που δεν γνωρίζουμε;
Υπάρχουν φυτά που μέσα στα φύλλα τους έχουν δηλητηριώδεις ουσίες και μάλιστα σε πολλά από αυτά το δηλητήριο είναι πολύ ισχυρό και θανατηφόρο για τα ζώα και τους ανθρώπους  που θα το φάνε. Ο λόγος που έχουν δηλητήριο είναι για να αποτρέπουν τα ζώα να τα φάνε. Μα πώς ξέρει ένα φυτό τι μπορεί να βλάψει ένα ζώο; Με τι κριτήρια και πώς δημιούργησε το δηλητήριο;

Τα αγκάθια επίσης που διαθέτουν πολλά φυτά είναι για να προκαλούν πόνο στα ζώα και να αποτρέπουν να τα φάνε. Μα πώς ξέρει ένα φυτό τι σημαίνει πόνος; Και πώς ξέρει ένα φυτό ότι τα ζώα πονάνε;
Μήπως ισχύει η θεωρία της εξέλιξης που υποστηρίζουν σχεδόν όλοι οι επιστήμονες; Ότι δηλαδή, μέσα από το πέρασμα εκατομμυρίων χρόνων οι οργανισμοί άλλαζαν συνεχώς μέχρις ότου να καταστούν σχεδόν τέλειοι και να μπορούν να προσαρμοσθούν πλήρως στο περιβάλλον τους;

Δεν είμαι θρήσκος άνθρωπος και γενικά είμαι άπιστος Θωμάς και αν δεν δω με τα μάτια μου κάτι δεν το πιστεύω, αλλά όταν βλέπω όλα αυτά αναρωτιέμαι, βρε μήπως πραγματικά υπάρχει θεός;

GEORGE KONSTANTINOU, 12 November 2017

I have not studied any branch of science. I am simply a person who loves and studies nature, and I often find myself faced with many unanswered and troubling questions. As a naturalist and researcher throughout my life, I spend endless hours in nature studying and photographing the flora and fauna of our country.

I wanted to write about and share some of my observations and thoughts with the rest of the world.

We have all probably seen an orchid in the countryside whose small flower bears an astonishing resemblance to a bee. For this reason, many orchid species in Cyprus are commonly called “little bees”.

In certain plants, the flowers resemble insects in order to attract them for pollination. But how did a plant that has no brain—and, above all, no eyes—know what a bee or another insect looks like and produce a flower that is almost identical to it? How is that possible?

There are also many plants whose flowers emit the unpleasant smell of a decomposing animal in order to deceive flies, attracting them to the flower so that they pollinate it. The pleasant fragrance of various flowers serves the same purpose of attracting insects.

There are also many species of fungi that emit such an odour in order to disperse their spores with the help of insects.

The great question is this: how can a plant or fungus that has no eyes, brain, sense of touch and, above all, sense of smell know the odour of a decomposing animal well enough to reproduce it in its flower? How does it know that flies exist and that they are attracted to the smell of carrion in order to lay their eggs? How can a plant without a sense of smell know what a pleasant or unpleasant odour is?

How can a plant know about vivid colours and produce flowers with so many different and magnificent colours in order to attract insects? How can it know that red and yellow are among the most conspicuous colours in nature when it has no eyes with which to observe its surroundings?

Another great question concerns trees that produce sweet fruit containing seeds. The fruit tastes sweet so that it will attract birds and other animals to eat it and, in this way, carry the seed far away, helping to perpetuate the species. But how does a tree know that birds and animals exist, and how does it know what they like to eat?

Certain plants have developed their seeds in such a way that, when the wind blows, they spin or fly just like helicopters, allowing them to germinate far away. How can a plant know the forces of the wind well enough to construct a seed with wing-like structures or soft down that enables it to fly over a considerable distance?

There are insectivorous plants whose flowers and leaves form perfect traps for capturing insects. They then secrete chemical substances that liquefy their prey, allowing them to absorb it and obtain nourishment.

In Cyprus, specifically in the Troodos Mountains, we have one such rare insectivorous plant: the strictly protected and nearly endemic Pinguicula crystallina, which is included in the Red Data Book of the threatened species of Cyprus.

This plant produces a sticky substance on its leaves. When an insect lands on them, the plant captures it, liquefies it and absorbs it.

But how can these plants, without possessing eyes, know that insects exist? Since they already have roots, how did they come to feed on insects? How did they produce this sticky substance, and how did they know that insects would become trapped in it?

The only direct contact between a plant and an insect occurs when the insect lands on the plant. Could plants possess a sense of touch? Could they possess awareness and some form of intelligence that remains unknown to us?

Some plants contain poisonous substances in their leaves, and in many of them the poison is extremely powerful and fatal to animals or humans that consume it. They possess poison to deter animals from eating them. But how does a plant know what can harm an animal? According to what criteria, and by what means, did it create the poison?

The thorns possessed by many plants also cause pain to animals and discourage them from eating the plants. But how does a plant know what pain means? How does it know that animals experience pain?

Other plants, such as the sunflower, know the direction of the sun and turn their flowers towards it to absorb its rays.

Some other plants wilt immediately when touched, creating the impression that they are not edible. This suggests that they possess some form of touch.

Could the theory of evolution, supported by almost all scientists, be correct? Could organisms have changed continuously over millions of years until they became almost perfect and capable of adapting fully to their environment?

For the human mind, however, it continues to seem inexplicable that something without eyes or a brain can know exactly what its surrounding environment is like. No matter how many millions of years may have passed, there appears to be no logical explanation.

I am not a religious person. In general, I am a doubting Thomas: unless I see something with my own eyes, I do not believe it. Yet when I observe all these things, I ask myself: could God truly exist after all?

Yes, surely some God exists. All these things could not have come into existence entirely on their own, especially with such perfection and wisdom that even intelligent human beings remain unable to understand and explain them.
