An Extremely Rare Visitor to Cyprus

Text by George Konstantinou

The Horned Grebe or Slavonian Grebe, scientifically named Podiceps auritus, is a relatively small waterbird belonging to the family Podicipedidae. It breeds across northern Eurasia and North America and moves southwards during winter. In Cyprus it is an extremely rare visitor.

Records in Cyprus

According to the information published in the original Biodiversity of Cyprus post, the bird found by Alison McArthur and photographed at Kouklia on 19 November 2017 represented the third record of the species in Cyprus. The previous known record was reported in 1958. Its appearance in 2017 therefore occurred after an interval of almost sixty years and was a particularly important event for birdwatching in Cyprus.

The long interval between the records demonstrates how rarely the species reaches Cyprus. It does not breed on the island, and its presence should be regarded as accidental, probably resulting from migratory movements or displacement from its usual wintering route.

Description and identification

The Horned Grebe measures approximately 31–38 centimetres in length and has a wingspan of about 55–74 centimetres. It has a compact body, a relatively short, slender and pointed bill, and legs positioned far back on the body. This makes it an excellent swimmer and diver but rather awkward on land.

Its non-breeding plumage, in which it is most likely to be observed in Cyprus, is predominantly black, grey and white. The crown and hindneck are dark, while the cheeks, throat and underparts are white. The eyes are strikingly red.

During the breeding season its appearance changes dramatically. The head becomes black, and distinctive golden-yellow feather tufts resembling small “horns” appear behind the eyes. The neck and flanks acquire a rich chestnut-red colour.

Distinction from the Black-necked Grebe

In winter plumage it may be confused with the Black-necked Grebe (Podiceps nigricollis). The Horned Grebe generally has a more compact head, a flatter forehead and a slightly stronger and straighter bill. The contrast between the dark crown and white cheeks is usually more clearly defined, with the dividing line passing at approximately eye level.

Identifying a solitary bird at a considerable distance requires care, because posture, lighting and transitional plumage may alter the appearance of the principal distinguishing features.

Distribution and migration

The species has an extensive but predominantly northern distribution. The Eurasian population breeds from Iceland and Scandinavia across northern Russia and Asia. The North American population breeds mainly in Canada and Alaska.

After breeding, many individuals migrate to regions with milder winters. They winter in sheltered coastal bays, estuaries, lagoons and large inland lakes. Small numbers reach the Mediterranean, while occurrences in the eastern Mediterranean—and particularly in Cyprus—are exceptionally unusual.

Habitat

During the breeding season, the Horned Grebe prefers small or moderately sized shallow freshwater lakes and marshes with aquatic and emergent vegetation. The vegetation provides nesting material, anchorage for its floating nest and protection from predators.

In winter it is found mainly in calm coastal waters, sheltered bays and estuaries, although it may also occur on reservoirs and large lakes. It is usually observed alone or in small groups.

Diet and diving behaviour

The Horned Grebe feeds principally on small fish, aquatic insects, insect larvae, crustaceans and other small invertebrates. It catches its prey by diving and propels itself underwater with its powerful feet.

Like other grebes, it deliberately swallows small feathers. These form a compact mass in the stomach that is believed to retain sharp remains, such as fish bones, until they can be expelled safely.

Breeding

The breeding season begins in spring. Pairs perform elaborate courtship displays on the water, involving synchronised movements of the head and body. The floating nest is constructed from aquatic vegetation and is usually anchored to plants near the shore.

Both parents incubate the eggs and care for the young. The chicks can swim shortly after hatching, but during their first days they are frequently carried on the backs of the adults.

Threats and conservation

The Horned Grebe is globally classified as Vulnerable. Population declines are associated with the loss and degradation of wetlands, drainage of lakes and marshes, pollution, oil spills, entanglement in fishing nets, human disturbance and changes to aquatic ecosystems. Drought and other effects of climate change may also reduce the availability of suitable breeding habitat.

Protecting wetlands, coastal wintering areas and water quality is essential for the conservation of the species. In Cyprus every observation should be documented carefully because the bird occurs exceptionally rarely, and each confirmed record contributes valuable information to knowledge of the island’s avifauna.
