It is the autumn of 2009. Naturalist and researcher of Cyprus biodiversity George Konstantinou is walking one afternoon along a dirt road in the coastal area of the community of Xylofagou. Suddenly, he stops. Something protruding from the side of the road catches his eye, at a point where the ground had previously been cut away to construct the road, some 5–6 metres above sea level. It was a fossilised elephant tooth.

Excited by the discovery of something hundreds of thousands of years old, he began carrying out research at the same location, work that continued for months. Eventually, it became apparent that the area contained numerous elephant bones, as well as remains of dwarf hippopotamuses. George Konstantinou also discovered bones belonging to birds of prey, a shrew, a freshwater turtle and a terrestrial tortoise.

From the very beginning, he was convinced that these remains did not belong to the well-known dwarf elephant Palaeoloxodon cypriotes, discovered in 1903 by the British palaeontologist Dorothea Bate. The animal represented by the new material was a dwarf form, weighing around 600 kilograms, but was considerably larger than the approximately 200-kilogram Palaeoloxodon cypriotes. The most compelling indication was a large tusk that he discovered at the same site.

Convinced of the significance of his discovery, he decided to approach academics so that his conclusions could be scientifically verified. At that time, the Association for the Protection of the Natural Heritage and Biodiversity of Cyprus, of which he was president, was receiving some financial grants, enabling him to bring a palaeontologist from abroad to Cyprus.

He initially contacted a palaeontologist at the University of Patras, explaining that he believed he had made an important discovery. He repeatedly urged him to travel to Cyprus because he was certain of the significance of the material. In 2011, the palaeontologist arrived in Cyprus at the Association's expense and examined the bones one by one. Measurements of the skeletal remains and tusk were subsequently sent to the Natural History Museum in London. There, scientists announced: "It is a new species to science!"

Scientists from the Natural History Museum in London and Yale University subsequently travelled to Cyprus and confirmed that the remains represented a new species of elephant. From the very beginning, George Konstantinou had also informed the Geological Survey Department of the Republic of Cyprus about the discovery.

The first official announcement of the discovery was made at an international palaeontological conference, the 9th Annual Meeting of the European Association of Vertebrate Palaeontologists (EAVP), held in Heraklion, Crete, from 14–19 June 2011. George Konstantinou's name was also included in the published conference proceedings.

"Into the Depths of the Cypriot Earth"

Fascinating stories such as the discovery of the new species, Palaeoloxodon xylophagous, which helped fill an evolutionary gap between the large-bodied elephants that reached Cyprus from continental Europe and the much smaller dwarf elephant Palaeoloxodon cypriotes, can now be enjoyed by readers in George Konstantinou's new bilingual book, in Greek and English, "The Prehistoric Mammals of Cyprus."

Following his first book, "The Birds of Cyprus," which is also available in both Greek and English, the naturalist now takes readers deep into the Cypriot earth, where prehistoric animals and their fossil remains reveal a little-known yet fascinating chapter of the island's natural heritage. As in his previous work, the book contains a wealth of photographic and informative material concerning fossils of prehistoric species brought to light through years of research.

"Long before the arrival of humans, the island was home to species found nowhere else in the world, such as the pygmy hippopotamus and the dwarf elephant, which disappeared forever, leaving behind only their bones and traces. From Aetokremnos, where remains of hippopotamuses were discovered, to Akanthou and other important localities, every discovery reveals another piece of the puzzle of prehistoric life," George Konstantinou told "P".

He emphasised that fossils are not simply stones; they are stories frozen in time, allowing us to discover the lost fauna of the island.

"The book presents the most important animals that lived in prehistoric Cyprus, the locations where their remains were discovered, as well as other valuable fossils that shed light on the past. At the same time, it highlights the timeless message that nature is fragile and that protecting biodiversity is a responsibility shared by us all," he stressed.

"Reptiles and Amphibians of Cyprus"

A second book, published alongside the volume on fossils, again explores the hidden world close to and beneath our feet—this time focusing on the remarkable diversity of reptiles.

Also bilingual, in Greek and English, "Reptiles and Amphibians of Cyprus" brings readers closer to the world of snakes, lizards, tortoises, turtles and amphibians, from the island's coastal areas to the peaks of the Troodos and Pentadaktylos mountain ranges.

The book includes all the reptiles and amphibians of Cyprus, with detailed descriptions and information on their biology, distribution and ecology, accompanied by extensive photographic material and personal observations accumulated through many years of field research.

"The pages of my book record a journey of exploration into the remarkable world of Cyprus' reptiles and amphibians. My aim is not only to highlight their uniqueness and ecological importance, but also to encourage respect and understanding for these often misunderstood creatures. Every species carries its own natural history and plays an important role in the fragile ecosystems of our island," the author notes.

Through the book, he invites every reader to discover the reptiles and amphibians of Cyprus not with fear or prejudice, but with admiration and an open mind—the same feelings that accompanied him throughout the countless hours he devoted to observing them in the wild.

That includes encounters such as the occasion when a coiled, beige blunt-nosed viper (Macrovipera lebetina lebetina), which he was filming on the trunk of a tree, became disturbed by his presence, raised itself and delivered a lightning-fast strike directly at the camera lens.

"Through my personal observations, field photographs and scientific information, I attempt to present a world that is fascinating, mysterious and vital to the balance of nature."

The work is the result of many years of observation, research and love for the natural world.

"It is the first book in Greek and English devoted exclusively to the reptiles and amphibians of Cyprus and aims to become a useful guide for naturalists, researchers, educators and every citizen wishing to better understand the reptile fauna of our country. It is, to date, the most comprehensive work published on the subject, as much of our knowledge and many of the data concerning the reptile fauna of Cyprus have changed," he emphasises.

Ο Κομήτης C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan–ATLAS): Ένας Ουράνιος Επισκέπτης που Ίσως Δεν Ξαναδούμε Ποτέ - Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan–ATLAS): A Celestial Visitor We May Never See Again

Ο C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan–ATLAS) ανακαλύφθηκε στις αρχές του 2023 από το Αστεροσκοπείο Tsuchinshan (Purple Mountain Observatory) στην Κίνα και σχεδόν ταυτόχρονα από το πρόγραμμα ATLAS (Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System).

Γιατί οι κομήτες αποκτούν ουρά;

Θα επιστρέψει ποτέ;

There are celestial events that we are fortunate enough to witness many times during our lives. Then there are those that become part of astronomical history. Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan–ATLAS) undoubtedly belongs to the latter.

In October 2024, millions of people around the world turned their eyes toward the western sky shortly after sunset to witness one of the most spectacular comets of recent decades. I was fortunate enough to be among them and to photograph this remarkable visitor from Cyprus.

Its brilliant nucleus and magnificent dust tail immediately caught the eye, stretching gracefully across the twilight sky like a luminous veil. It was one of those rare moments when no photograph, however beautiful, can truly capture the emotion of seeing such a celestial wonder with your own eyes.

A Traveler from the Edge of the Solar System

Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan–ATLAS) was discovered in early 2023 by the Purple Mountain Observatory (Tsuchinshan) in China and independently by the ATLAS (Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System) survey. Its name honors both discoveries.

The comet originated in the mysterious Oort Cloud, a vast spherical shell of icy bodies surrounding our Solar System. Extending up to approximately 100,000 astronomical units from the Sun—nearly two light-years away—it is believed to contain billions of dormant comets waiting to begin their journeys toward the inner Solar System.

For countless millions of years, this comet wandered through the darkness of interstellar space in complete silence. Eventually, gravitational disturbances—possibly from passing stars or the tidal forces of our galaxy—altered its orbit and sent it on an extraordinary voyage toward the Sun.

Why Do Comets Develop Tails?

Contrary to popular belief, comets do not always have tails.

Their nuclei are essentially frozen mixtures of water ice, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, methane, ammonia, dust, and rocky material. While traveling through the cold outer reaches of the Solar System, they remain dark, frozen objects with little visible activity.

Everything changes as they approach the Sun.

Solar heat causes the frozen gases to sublimate, releasing enormous quantities of gas and dust into space. This forms the bright glowing coma surrounding the nucleus.

From this expanding cloud emerge two distinct tails:

  • The dust tail, composed of tiny solid particles pushed away by sunlight, usually appearing white or golden.
  • The ion (gas) tail, made of electrically charged gases carried away by the solar wind, often displaying a faint bluish color.

Interestingly, both tails always point away from the Sun, regardless of the comet's direction of travel.

One of the Brightest Comets in Decades

Astronomers were initially uncertain whether C/2023 A3 would survive its close passage around the Sun. Many comets fragment or completely disintegrate when subjected to intense solar heating.

Fortunately, this one survived.

After reaching perihelion in late September 2024, it rapidly brightened and became one of the finest naked-eye comets observed in many years. During the middle of October, observers under dark skies could easily detect it without optical aid, while binoculars and telescopes revealed an even more spectacular sight.

Its immense dust tail stretched across the evening sky, while in reality it extended tens of millions of kilometers into space.

Will It Ever Return?

Perhaps the most fascinating aspect of this comet is its uncertain future.

Current orbital calculations indicate that gravitational interactions with the planets significantly altered its trajectory.

It is possible that C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan–ATLAS) has been placed on an extremely long-period orbit that could keep it away for hundreds of thousands—or even millions—of years. Some studies even suggest that it may eventually leave the Solar System altogether.

If that proves to be the case, humanity has witnessed this magnificent comet for the first—and last—time.

A Personal Moment Beneath the Stars

Whenever I photograph wildlife, landscapes, or the night sky, my goal is not simply to capture an image. I want to preserve a moment that will never exist in exactly the same way again.

That is precisely how I felt while photographing Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan–ATLAS) from Cyprus.

Standing beneath the evening sky, I realized I was not simply looking at another beautiful comet. I was witnessing an ancient traveler that had spent millions of years journeying through the depths of space before briefly visiting our corner of the Solar System.

Moments like these remind us how small we are in the vastness of the universe—and yet how privileged we are to witness such extraordinary events.

For me, this photograph is much more than an astrophotograph. It is a personal memory of a rare celestial visitor that illuminated Earth's evening sky for only a few unforgettable nights before continuing its endless journey into the unknown.

This video captures the spectacular Super Full Moon of 1 August 2023 as it illuminated the night sky over Cyprus. The Full Moon of 1 August 2023 was traditionally known as the Sturgeon Moon, a name originating from Native American tribes, particularly those living around the Great Lakes. During this time of year, large sturgeon were most easily caught, providing an important seasonal food source for local communities. This Full Moon was also classified as a Supermoon, occurring only a few days before the Moon reached perigee, the point in its orbit where it is closest to Earth. As a result, the Moon appeared approximately 7% larger and up to 16% brighter than an average Full Moon occurring near apogee. The Sturgeon Moon was also the first of two Full Moons during August 2023. The second occurred on 30 August 2023 and was the well-known Blue Moon—not because the Moon appeared blue, but because it was the second Full Moon within the same calendar month, a relatively uncommon event that occurs roughly every two to three years. The exact moment of Full Moon occurred at
18:31 UTC (21:31 Cyprus time), when the lunar disc reached 100% illumination. The Moon, Earth's only natural satellite, orbits our planet at an average distance of approximately 384,400 kilometres (238,855 miles). It completes one orbit around Earth every 27.3 days, while the complete lunar phase cycle lasts about 29.5 days. For thousands of years, the Full Moon has inspired mythology, astronomy, navigation, photography and cultures throughout the world. Its timeless beauty continues to captivate skywatchers, photographers and nature lovers alike. 📍 Location: Cyprus 📅 Filming Date: 1 August 2023 © Text and video George Konstantinou

A Network of International Importance

Cyprus' IBAs support an extraordinary diversity of birdlife throughout the year. Many provide breeding habitat for resident and summer visitors, while others serve as essential stopover sites for millions of migratory birds crossing the Eastern Mediterranean.

The network protects habitats used by globally threatened species, raptors, waterbirds, seabirds, endemic species and numerous migratory passerines. Wetlands such as the Larnaca Salt Lakes, Oroklini Lake and the Mia Milia Sewage Lagoons are internationally recognised for their importance to wintering and migrating waterbirds. Mountain forests such as Troodos, Mahairas and Pafos Forest provide refuge for Cyprus' endemic birds and forest specialists, while the sea cliffs of Akamas, Cape Aspro and Episkopi support breeding seabirds and birds of prey.

The most recent revision by BirdLife Cyprus expanded the national IBA network from 19 to 34 sites, reflecting improved ornithological knowledge and extensive field surveys carried out across the island. The updated network provides a more comprehensive representation of Cyprus' most valuable habitats for birds and biodiversity.

Today, these 34 Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas form the backbone of bird conservation in Cyprus. They represent not only the island's richest wildlife habitats but also an essential link in one of the world's major migratory flyways, making their protection crucial for the conservation of bird populations across three continents.

Σήμερα, η περιοχή αναγνωρίζεται ως μία από τις 34 Σημαντικές Περιοχές για τα Πουλιά και τη Βιοποικιλότητα στην Κυπρο - The 34 Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas in Cyprus – IBAs),της Κύπρου και αποτελεί πολύτιμο καταφύγιο για τη βιοποικιλότητα.

A few kilometres east of Nicosia, in the occupied area of Mia Milia (Haspolat), lies one of Cyprus' most important yet least known wetlands. Originally constructed as part of a wastewater treatment facility, the Mia Milia Sewage Lagoons were designed solely for the treatment of urban wastewater. Over the years, however, they have evolved into one of the island's most valuable artificial wetlands, providing refuge for thousands of waterbirds, reptiles, amphibians and countless other organisms.

Today, the site is recognised as one of Cyprus' 34 Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas in Cyprus – IBAs) and has become a vital sanctuary for biodiversity, demonstrating how carefully managed artificial wetlands can play a crucial role in nature conservation.

An Artificial Wetland of Exceptional Ecological Value

Although created for engineering purposes, the interconnected lagoons, extensive reed beds, shallow pools and muddy shorelines have gradually developed into a thriving wetland ecosystem closely resembling a natural marsh.

In the otherwise dry landscape of the Mesaoria Plain, the permanent availability of water provides ideal conditions for wildlife throughout the year. The dense reed beds offer secure nesting habitat, while the shallow waters support abundant aquatic life, supplying food for breeding, wintering and migrating birds.

Every year thousands of birds use the lagoons as a resting and feeding station during their migration between Europe, Asia and Africa, making Mia Milia one of the most significant wetlands in Cyprus for migratory species.

A Paradise for Birds

The Mia Milia lagoons support an impressive diversity of birdlife throughout the year. Some species breed within the wetland, others spend the winter there, while many remain only briefly during migration.

One of the site's greatest conservation successes is the Ferruginous Duck (Aythya nyroca), a species classified globally as Near Threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Mia Milia supports one of the most important breeding populations of this species in Cyprus.

The shallow muddy margins provide ideal nesting sites for the elegant Black-winged Stilt (Himantopus himantopus), with its unmistakably long crimson legs, while the Spur-winged Lapwing (Vanellus spinosus), one of Cyprus' most characteristic wetland birds, breeds regularly within the area.

Many additional species have been recorded, including the Purple Heron (Ardea purpurea), Common Redshank (Tringa totanus), Bluethroat (Luscinia svecica), Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus), numerous egrets, herons, sandpipers, gulls, terns, raptors and a wide variety of passerines, depending on the season.

The abundance and diversity of birds make Mia Milia one of the finest birdwatching locations on the island during migration.

The Freshwater Turtles of Mia Milia

The lagoons are equally important for reptiles, particularly the Balkan Terrapin (Mauremys rivulata), Cyprus' only native freshwater turtle.

Elsewhere on the island, populations of this species have declined due to wetland destruction, pollution and habitat fragmentation. At Mia Milia, however, the permanent water and abundant food have allowed an exceptionally large population to flourish.

Today, the lagoons are believed to support the largest known population of Balkan Terrapins in Cyprus, with hundreds of individuals inhabiting the ponds, channels and surrounding marshes.

On sunny days these turtles can often be seen basking on rocks, logs or concrete structures before quickly diving into the water when disturbed. Their diet consists of aquatic insects, amphibians, small fish, freshwater invertebrates and aquatic vegetation, making them an important component of the wetland ecosystem.

Other Wildlife

The constant availability of freshwater supports a rich community of frogs, dragonflies, damselflies, aquatic insects and small fish, all of which form the basis of the wetland food web.

These organisms in turn attract numerous herons, egrets, kingfishers and birds of prey. Mammals such as the Red Fox occasionally visit the lagoons, while feral and free-ranging domestic cats pose one of the greatest threats to ground-nesting birds by preying upon eggs and chicks.

The wetland also provides habitat for various reptiles, including water snakes and lizards commonly associated with freshwater environments.

Conservation Challenges

Despite its outstanding ecological importance, the Mia Milia wetland faces several significant threats.

Predation by feral cats continues to reduce the breeding success of many ground-nesting birds. At the same time, future modifications to the wastewater treatment system could alter water levels, vegetation structure and habitat quality, potentially affecting the wildlife that depends upon the lagoons.

Recognising these challenges, BirdLife Cyprus and the Turkish Cypriot conservation organisation KUŞKOR have collaborated on habitat management and conservation projects aimed at improving breeding conditions, reducing threats and increasing public awareness of the site's environmental importance.

An Important Wetland Along a Global Migration Route

The Mia Milia Sewage Lagoons demonstrate how an artificial landscape can develop into an ecosystem of exceptional ecological significance.

Within only a few decades, a wastewater treatment facility has become one of Cyprus' most valuable wetlands, supporting rare waterbirds, freshwater turtles, amphibians and countless other species.

Its importance extends well beyond Cyprus. Situated along one of the principal migration corridors of the Eastern Mediterranean, the wetland serves as a vital stopover for thousands of birds travelling annually between Europe, Asia and Africa.

Protecting this remarkable ecosystem is therefore not only important for Cyprus but also contributes to the conservation of one of the Mediterranean's most important migratory flyways. It stands as a powerful example of nature's ability to reclaim and transform human-made landscapes into thriving centres of biodiversity.
