Swingle.

Ailanthus

  1. Ailanthus altissima (Mill.)

Ailanthus altissima (Mill.) Swingle

Το Ailanthus altissima, γνωστό στα αγγλικά ως tree of heaven, ailanthus ή Chinese sumac, είναι ταχέως αναπτυσσόμενο φυλλοβόλο δέντρο.

The family Simaroubaceae, known as the quassia family or tree-of-heaven family, is a family of flowering plants belonging to the order Sapindales. It includes 20 accepted genera and approximately 110 species, distributed mainly throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of the world.

The family consists mainly of trees and shrubs. Many species are characterized by the intensely bitter taste of their bark, wood and leaves, caused by the presence of bioactive compounds known as quassinoids.

According to the new organized checklist of the Cypriot flora, the family Simaroubaceae is represented in Cyprus by 1 genus and 1 taxon. It is the alien, naturalized and invasive species Ailanthus altissima (Mill.) Swingle.

General characteristics

The members of the family are mainly deciduous or evergreen trees and shrubs. The leaves are usually arranged alternately and are compound, pinnate or, less commonly, simple. Stipules are generally absent.

The flowers are small and arranged in racemes, panicles or other many-flowered inflorescences. They may be bisexual or unisexual, while the plants may be monoecious or dioecious.

The flowers usually possess four or five sepals and an equal number of petals. A conspicuous nectar-producing disc that attracts pollinating insects may occur inside them.

The fruit displays considerable diversity and may be a drupe, capsule or winged schizocarpic structure. In the genus Ailanthus, each seed is situated in the centre of a flattened, winged fruit known as a samara.

The family Simaroubaceae in Cyprus

The only member of the family recorded in the new organized checklist is Ailanthus altissima. The species is native to China and Taiwan and was introduced to many countries as an ornamental and shade tree.

In Cyprus, it has been planted in inhabited areas, along roads and around properties. It has escaped from cultivation and can form self-sustaining populations in disturbed and semi-natural habitats.

The species is classified in Cyprus as Naturalized invasive (NA).

Taxa of the family Simaroubaceae in Cyprus

Alien and naturalized taxa

Ailanthus

  1. Ailanthus altissima (Mill.) Swingle – Species – Naturalized invasive (NA)

Total: 1 genus and 1 taxon.

Ailanthus altissima (Mill.) Swingle

Ailanthus altissima, known in English as tree of heaven, ailanthus or Chinese sumac, is a rapidly growing deciduous tree. It can reach a height of 20–30 metres and form a broad, irregular crown.

The trunk has relatively smooth, greyish bark, which develops pale vertical cracks in older trees. The young shoots are thick, brownish-green or reddish and possess large leaf scars.

When the leaves, shoots or bark are crushed, they emit a strong and unpleasant odour. This odour is a useful identification characteristic.

Leaves

The leaves are very large, alternate and pinnate. They can reach 30–90 centimetres in length and bear numerous ovate to lanceolate leaflets.

The leaflets are usually entire but possess one or more large teeth near their base. Glands occur on the lower surface of these basal teeth.

The form of the leaves may cause confusion with species of the genus Rhus or other shrubs and trees with pinnate leaves. The unpleasant odour and characteristic basal teeth assist identification.

Flowers

The flowers are small, greenish or yellowish-green and arranged in large, branched panicles. The plants are usually dioecious, with male and female flowers occurring on separate trees.

The male flowers produce a strong odour that attracts flies, beetles and other insects. Female trees produce the numerous winged fruits.

In Cyprus, flowering is recorded from May to June.

Fruits and seeds

The fruit is a flattened, elongated samara, with the seed situated approximately in the centre. It is initially greenish, subsequently becoming reddish or pinkish and finally brown when mature.

The samaras form large, dense clusters and remain on the trees for a long period. Their twisted shape causes them to rotate as they fall, allowing them to be transported by wind.

A mature female tree can produce a very large number of seeds, which are transported to roads, courtyards, fields, slopes and natural habitats.

Habitats in Cyprus

Ailanthus altissima may occur in:

  • inhabited and industrial areas,
  • roadsides and motorway margins,
  • cracks in pavements and walls,
  • abandoned plots,
  • ruined buildings and old properties,
  • field boundaries,
  • slopes and disturbed ground,
  • beds and banks of watercourses,
  • forest clearings and margins of natural vegetation.

In Cyprus, it has been recorded at an altitude of approximately 400 metres. It can grow in poor, compacted, dry or polluted soils and is highly tolerant of urban conditions.

Reproduction and dispersal

The species reproduces sexually by seeds and vegetatively through root suckers. The seeds are transported mainly by wind and can become established in small cracks or areas with very little available soil.

The root system may extend a considerable distance from the parent trunk and produce numerous new shoots. Cutting or damaging the tree often stimulates the extensive production of suckers.

Even small root fragments can produce new shoots. The combination of abundant seed production and strong vegetative reproduction explains the species’ considerable invasive ability.

Allelopathy

Ailanthus altissima produces chemical substances that can be released into the soil through its roots, leaves and decomposing plant material.

Certain substances, particularly ailanthone, can restrict the germination or development of other plants. This phenomenon is known as allelopathy and may give the species a competitive advantage.

The effect depends on the soil, moisture, plant density and local environmental conditions.

Environmental adaptations

Its rapid growth allows the species to occupy open and disturbed sites quickly. The extensive root system helps it utilize available moisture and survive cutting, fire or other disturbance.

The species tolerates high temperatures, drought, air pollution, compacted soils and limited fertility. Its abundant wind-dispersed seeds help it reach new sites rapidly.

These properties make it particularly successful in urban and suburban environments but also dangerous to natural ecosystems when it spreads without control.

Ecological impacts

Ailanthus altissima may form dense, almost single-species stands. These stands shade and compete with native vegetation for water, light, space and nutrients.

Its strong production of suckers allows the species to spread rapidly following disturbance. Its allelopathic activity may hinder the establishment of other plants.

The roots can damage pavements, walls, pipes, archaeological remains and other constructed features. New shoots may appear a considerable distance from the original trunk.

Uses and history of introduction

The species was introduced to many countries as an ornamental and shade tree because of its rapid growth and tolerance of pollution. It was also used for stabilizing slopes and producing timber or fuel.

The ease of cultivation that was initially considered an advantage subsequently contributed to its extensive escape and spread.

Its planting near natural ecosystems, watercourses, archaeological sites and other sensitive areas should now be avoided.

Contact and precautions

The sap and plant hairs may cause skin irritation in sensitive individuals. Gloves, protective clothing and suitable equipment are recommended during cutting or uprooting.

Dust and particles produced when cutting the wood should not be inhaled. Major operations should be carried out by appropriately trained people, particularly when trees occur near buildings or electrical cables.

Monitoring and management

Simply cutting the trunk usually does not eliminate the plant. Instead, it may stimulate the mass development of new shoots from the base and roots.

Small seedlings can be carefully removed with the entire root when the soil is moist. Larger populations require combined and repeated management and several years of monitoring for new suckers and seedlings.

Priority should be given to the early removal of female trees before seed maturation, preventing the transport of roots and soil and monitoring watercourses and natural habitats.

Management using chemical methods must be conducted only in accordance with current legislation and by competent or appropriately trained persons, particularly near water and protected areas.

Sesamum

Sesamum indicum L.

The family Pedaliaceae, known as the sesame family or pedalium family, is a family of flowering plants belonging to the order Lamiales. It includes 11 accepted genera and approximately 80 species, distributed mainly throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Madagascar and Asia.

The family consists mainly of herbaceous plants and small shrubs, several of which are adapted to warm, dry or seasonally dry environments. Its most economically important representative is sesame, Sesamum indicum, one of the oldest oilseed crops cultivated by humans.

According to the new organized checklist of the Cypriot flora, the family Pedaliaceae is represented in Cyprus by 1 genus and 1 taxon. It is the alien and naturalized species Sesamum indicum L.

General characteristics

The members of the family are usually annual or perennial herbaceous plants and, less commonly, shrubs or small trees. The stems and leaves of many species are covered with simple, glandular or mucilaginous hairs, which may give them a sticky or slightly slimy texture.

The leaves are simple, without stipules, and arranged oppositely or alternately. They may be entire, toothed or deeply lobed. On the same plant, the lower leaves may differ significantly from the upper ones.

The flowers are usually bisexual, bilaterally symmetrical and tubular or bell-shaped. The corolla consists of five fused petals and forms two lips. The flowers may be white, yellowish, pink, purple or red.

The fruit is usually a capsule, which may open at maturity and release numerous seeds. In certain genera, the fruits possess spines, hooks, wings or other specialized structures that facilitate dispersal.

The family Pedaliaceae in Cyprus

The only member of the family included in the new organized checklist is Sesamum indicum L. It is an ancient cultivated plant that produces the familiar edible sesame seeds.

In Cyprus, it has been cultivated for its oil-rich seeds and may appear outside cultivation in fields, along roadsides and in other disturbed habitats.

The species is classified in Cyprus as Naturalized non-invasive (NN).

Taxa of the family Pedaliaceae in Cyprus

Alien and naturalized taxa

Sesamum

  1. Sesamum indicum L. – Species – Naturalized non-invasive (NN)

Total: 1 genus and 1 taxon.

Sesamum indicum L.

Sesamum indicum, known in English as sesame, benne or gingelly, is an annual herbaceous plant. According to Plants of the World Online, its native distribution lies in the Indian Subcontinent, although its very long history of cultivation and transportation makes the precise reconstruction of its original origin difficult.

It is now widely cultivated throughout the warm regions of Asia, Africa, the Americas and the Mediterranean. It is particularly tolerant of high temperatures and displays relatively good adaptation to drought.

The plant usually reaches a height of 50–150 centimetres. Its stem is upright, simple or branched, quadrangular or slightly furrowed and may be smooth or hairy.

Leaves

The leaves display considerable variation along the stem. The lower leaves are usually opposite and broad and may be entire or deeply lobed. The upper leaves are often alternate, narrower and lanceolate.

The change in the shape and arrangement of the leaves is a characteristic feature of the species. Their surface may be smooth or covered with sparse hairs.

Flowers

The flowers usually develop singly or in small groups in the axils of the upper leaves. They are tubular to bell-shaped and slightly bilaterally symmetrical.

The corolla is usually white, pink or pale purple, often with darker spots or lines on its inner surface. The flowers attract bees and other pollinating insects.

Many cultivated varieties can also self-pollinate before or during the opening of the flowers. In Cyprus, flowering is recorded from July to September.

Fruits and seeds

The fruit is an elongated, upright capsule containing numerous small, flattened seeds. Depending on the variety, the seeds may be white, yellowish, brown, reddish or black.

In traditional varieties, the mature capsule opens and the seeds are scattered. The familiar phrase “Open sesame” is derived from this characteristic. Modern cultivated varieties have often been selected for reduced fruit shattering to limit losses during harvesting.

The seeds contain a large amount of oil, proteins and characteristic lignans, including sesamin and sesamolin.

Habitats in Cyprus

Outside cultivation, Sesamum indicum may appear in:

  • cultivated or recently abandoned fields,
  • margins of agricultural plots,
  • roadsides,
  • areas where seeds are stored and processed,
  • piles of soil and agricultural remains,
  • irrigated and disturbed ground,
  • sites where seeds have been scattered during transportation.

In Cyprus, it has been recorded at an altitude of approximately 175 metres. Its presence outside cultivation is associated mainly with the escape of seeds from crops or the transport of agricultural products.

Reproduction and dispersal

The species reproduces exclusively by seeds. Pollination takes place through self-pollination and with the assistance of insects, particularly bees.

When the capsules mature and open, the seeds fall close to the parent plant. They may also be transported by water, soil, agricultural machinery, vehicles, animal feed and human activities.

Seeds remaining in the soil may germinate when suitable temperature and moisture conditions occur.

Environmental adaptations

Sesame is well adapted to warm and seasonally dry environments. Its root system can penetrate relatively deeply into the soil and utilize moisture from lower layers.

The leaves and stems may possess hairs that reduce direct exposure of the surface and influence water loss. Its short biological cycle enables the plant to complete its growth and seed production during the warm season.

Despite its tolerance of drought, it is sensitive to prolonged waterlogging and grows best in well-drained soils.

Ecological role

The flowers provide nectar and pollen to bees and other insects. In cultivated areas, sesame may constitute an important seasonal food source for pollinators.

Seeds falling to the ground may be eaten by birds, rodents and other animals. Plants appearing outside cultivation are generally restricted to disturbed sites and agricultural habitats.

In Cyprus, the species is not considered invasive and has not been recorded as causing significant degradation of natural ecosystems.

Economic and nutritional importance

Sesame seeds are used whole, hulled, roasted or ground. They are a basic ingredient of tahini, halva, baked products, sweets and many traditional dishes.

Sesame oil is used in cooking, food production, cosmetics and various traditional applications. It has relatively good oxidative stability because of the presence of natural antioxidant compounds.

Sesame cultivation has particular historical importance in the countries of the eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East.

Sesame allergy

Despite its considerable nutritional value, sesame is an important food allergen. Even a small quantity may cause a severe allergic reaction in sensitive individuals.

Sesame and its products, including tahini and sesame oils retaining proteins, must be consumed with caution by people with a diagnosed allergy. A severe reaction requires immediate medical assistance.

Monitoring and management

Because the species is classified in Cyprus as naturalized non-invasive, generalized control is not required. However, recording plants appearing in natural habitats far from cultivated areas is useful.

Seed dispersal can be prevented by removing the plants before the capsules mature. Management should focus only on cases where undesirable spread is observed in ecologically sensitive areas.

Passiflora

Passiflora caerulea L.

The family Passifloraceae, known as the passionflower family, is a family of flowering plants belonging to the order Malpighiales. It includes 31 accepted genera and approximately 750 species, distributed mainly throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of the world.

The family includes herbaceous plants, shrubs, small trees and many climbing species. Its largest and best-known genus is Passiflora, which includes the passionflowers and the plants that produce the familiar passion fruits.

According to the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora, the family Passifloraceae is represented in Cyprus by 1 genus and 1 taxon. It is the casual alien species Passiflora caerulea L.

General characteristics

The members of the family display considerable morphological diversity. Many species of the genus Passiflora are perennial climbing plants with long, flexible stems.

The leaves are usually simple and arranged alternately. They may be entire or divided into three, five or more lobes. Stipules are often present at their base, while extrafloral nectar-producing glands may occur on the petioles or leaf blades.

The tendrils develop in the leaf axils and allow the plant to attach itself to branches, fences, walls and other surfaces. The tendrils react to contact, coil around the support and hold the growing stem in place.

The flowers are usually large, radially symmetrical and particularly complex. They possess five sepals, five petals and one or more rows of thread-like appendages forming the characteristic corona.

The stamens and pistil are raised on a common stalk known as the androgynophore. This unusual structure facilitates contact between pollinators and the anthers and stigmas.

The fruit is usually a fleshy berry with numerous seeds. Each seed is often surrounded by a fleshy covering that attracts animals and contributes to dispersal.

The family Passifloraceae in Cyprus

The only taxon of the family included in the new organized checklist is Passiflora caerulea L. The species is native to South America and is widely cultivated as an ornamental climbing plant.

In Cyprus, it is planted in gardens, courtyards and other landscaped areas, usually on fences, pergolas and walls. Plants have been recorded outside cultivation, but the species is not considered to have formed stable and widely distributed self-sustaining populations.

For this reason, it is classified as a Casual alien (CA) and not as a naturalized species.

Taxa of the family Passifloraceae in Cyprus

Alien and naturalized taxa

Passiflora

  1. Passiflora caerulea L. – Species – Casual alien (CA)

Total: 1 genus and 1 taxon.

Passiflora caerulea L.

Passiflora caerulea, known in English as blue passionflower, blue passion flower or common passionflower, is a perennial evergreen or semi-evergreen climbing plant. Its native distribution extends from Bolivia and Paraguay to Brazil and northern Argentina.

Its stems grow rapidly and can reach several metres in length. The plant climbs with the assistance of strong, coiling tendrils that arise from the leaf axils.

Leaves

The leaves are alternate, green and usually palmately divided into five deep lobes. The lobes are elongated, with an entire margin and an acute or blunt apex.

Conspicuous nectar-producing glands are often present on the petiole. These glands produce nectar outside the flowers and may attract ants and other insects.

Flowers

The flowers are large, complex and particularly impressive. They possess five white or slightly greenish sepals and five white petals.

The characteristic corona develops above the petals and consists of several rows of slender filaments. The filaments are usually white at the base, blue or purple in the middle and pale towards their tips.

At the centre of the flower is the androgynophore, which bears five large anthers and, above them, the ovary with three styles and three conspicuous stigmas.

The flowers produce nectar and are pollinated mainly by bees and other large insects. In Cyprus, the flowering period is recorded from April to October.

Fruits and seeds

The fruit is an ovoid or almost spherical berry. It is initially green and becomes orange or yellowish-orange when mature.

It contains numerous seeds, each surrounded by a fleshy covering. The mature fruits are edible, although they are usually less palatable than the fruits of Passiflora edulis.

Unripe fruits and other parts of the plant should not be consumed because they may contain cyanogenic compounds. The use of the plant as food or medicine requires correct identification and appropriate knowledge.

Habitats in Cyprus

Passiflora caerulea may appear in:

  • gardens and courtyards,
  • pergolas and fences,
  • abandoned gardens,
  • bases of walls,
  • roadsides,
  • cultivated land boundaries,
  • piles of soil and pruned material,
  • relatively moist, disturbed ground near inhabited areas.

Flora of Cyprus does not provide a numerical altitudinal range for the species. Its presence on the island is associated mainly with cultivation and escape from planted sites.

Reproduction and dispersal

The species reproduces by seeds and vegetatively through root suckers or plant fragments. Its fruits may be eaten by birds and other animals, which transport the seeds to new locations.

Its spread is also associated with the movement of soil, the disposal of pruned material and deliberate cultivation. Discarded plant fragments may take root under suitable conditions.

The strong root system can produce new shoots following cutting or damage to the above-ground parts.

Environmental adaptations

The tendrils allow the plant to climb towards the light without investing large amounts of energy in developing a strong, self-supporting trunk.

The extensive root system and ability to resprout help the plant survive drought, pruning or other disturbances. In colder areas, the above-ground parts may be damaged, but the plant often resprouts from the base.

The long flowering period increases the chances of successful pollination and fruit production.

Ecological role

The flowers provide nectar and pollen to bees and other pollinating insects. The fruits may provide food for birds and other animals, while the dense foliage offers cover to small animals and invertebrates.

In areas where it becomes strongly naturalized, the plant may cover shrubs and small trees, reducing the available light. In Cyprus, however, it is currently classified as casual rather than naturalized or invasive.

Uses

Passiflora caerulea is cultivated mainly as an ornamental plant because of its impressive flowers, rapid growth and ability to cover pergolas and fences.

It has also been used as rootstock for grafting other passionflower species. The mature fruits are edible but do not have the quality and flavour of the commercial passion fruit.

Various species of the genus Passiflora have traditional medicinal uses. Their properties and safety differ between species and should not be considered identical throughout the genus.

Monitoring and management

Because the species can spread by seeds and root suckers, recording plants that appear far from gardens or other cultivated sites is useful.

In ecologically sensitive areas, the disposal of fruits, pruned material and root fragments should be avoided. When removal is required, cutting the stems alone is insufficient; the root system must also be checked for possible resprouting.

Monitoring new occurrences will show whether the species remains casual or begins to form stable, self-sustaining populations in the future.
