Aturia sp. – Miocene fossil nautiloid from Cyprus
Aturia is an extinct genus of marine cephalopods belonging to the nautiloids. These animals possessed an external, spirally coiled, chambered shell and were broadly related in evolutionary terms to living nautiluses.
The fossil presented in this post can safely be assigned only to the genus Aturia and not to a particular species without a more detailed morphological examination. It is therefore referred to here as Aturia sp.
The genus Aturia is known from Cenozoic marine sediments and had a very wide geographical distribution. Its fossils have been discovered in many parts of the world, indicating that these animals were widespread components of the seas in which they lived.
Taxonomic position
Aturia belongs to the Mollusca and, more specifically, to the Cephalopoda. It is placed within the order Nautilida and the extinct family Aturiidae.
The genus Aturia was established by Bronn in 1838. Its type species is Aturia aturi, originally described as Nautilus aturi by Basterot in 1825.
The shell
The shell of Aturia was smooth, strongly involute and disk-shaped. Later whorls largely covered the earlier ones, producing a very small or effectively closed umbilicus.
As in other nautiloids, the interior of the shell was divided by transverse septa into a series of chambers. The animal occupied the final and largest body chamber, while the older chambers formed the chambered portion of the shell.
A particularly important characteristic of Aturia is its relatively complex suture line between the septa and the outer shell wall. It also possesses a siphuncle positioned close to the inner, dorsal side of the shell.
These characters are useful in identifying the genus.
The siphuncle and buoyancy
The chambers of the shell were connected by a tubular structure known as the siphuncle.
In nautiloids, this system is associated with regulating fluids and gases within the shell chambers and therefore with controlling buoyancy.
In Aturia, the siphuncle lies close to the dorsal side of the shell and displays distinctive morphological features that distinguish it from many other nautiloids.
Mode of life
Because the genus is extinct, its biology cannot be observed directly. Shell morphology and comparison with other nautiloids indicate that it was a free-moving marine cephalopod.
Its chambered shell and buoyancy-control system would have allowed it to move within the water column.
However, the exact depth or behaviour of the animal represented by a particular Cypriot fossil cannot be determined solely from the presence of the fossil.
Fossil Aturia shells and post-mortem drift
An interesting characteristic of nautiloids is that an empty shell may remain buoyant after the death of the animal.
For several fossil Aturia species, researchers have proposed that empty shells could be transported considerable distances by ocean currents before eventually sinking and becoming incorporated into marine sediments.
The presence of an Aturia shell in a particular sedimentary deposit therefore does not necessarily prove that the living animal inhabited exactly the same location where its shell was ultimately fossilised.
Aturia in Cyprus
The occurrence of the genus in Cyprus is documented in the palaeontological literature.
A particularly important record comes from the Yerasa area in Limassol District, based on F. R. C. Reed's 1935 work on the Neogene faunas of Cyprus.
Aturia aturi has been recorded from this locality together with other marine fossils. The locality is assigned to the Pakhna Formation, and the associated age range is given as approximately 20.44–11.62 million years, within the Miocene.
This does not mean that every Aturia fossil discovered in Cyprus necessarily belongs to A. aturi. Species-level identification requires sufficiently preserved characters, including shell morphology, sutures, siphuncular structures and other diagnostic details.
The Pakhna Formation
The Pakhna Formation is one of the most important Miocene sedimentary successions of Cyprus.
According to the Geological Survey Department, its sediments were deposited approximately 22–7 million years ago, during a period when the marine environment surrounding the gradually emerging Troodos massif was becoming progressively shallower.
The formation consists mainly of chalks, marls, limestones, sandstones and other marine sediments.
Nautiloids in the Miocene rocks of Cyprus
The Geological Survey Department specifically records macrofossils of bivalves, gastropods, echinoids, nautiloids and fish within the Pakhna Formation.
Nautiloids therefore form part of the documented Miocene marine fossil fauna of Cyprus.
These fossils are remnants of a period when large areas that now form the island were still beneath the sea.
Fossilisation and preservation
The original shell of nautiloids consisted largely of aragonite, a mineral that is not always preserved during fossilisation.
Consequently, many fossil Aturia specimens survive as internal moulds or impressions rather than retaining their original shell material.
In well-preserved examples, chambers, septal sutures and sometimes parts of the siphuncular system may remain visible. These structures can be particularly useful for taxonomic identification.
Importance of these fossils
Miocene marine fossils provide valuable evidence for understanding the geological history of Cyprus.
They demonstrate that areas now exposed on land once formed part of the seafloor and help reconstruct the environmental conditions that prevailed during the gradual uplift of the island.
The Geological Survey Department also notes that fossils can act as palaeoenvironmental indicators, providing information about ancient environments, the evolution of organisms and past environmental conditions.
