Στον δυναμικό κατάλογο του Flora of Cyprus το κυπριακό φυτό καταγράφεται ως Quercus coccifera subsp. calliprinos (Webb) Holmboe.

The Kermes oak of Cyprus

The Kermes oak, Quercus coccifera subsp. calliprinos, is a native evergreen oak of Cyprus and a characteristic component of the island’s Mediterranean vegetation. It belongs to the family Fagaceae, which includes the oaks, beeches and chestnuts.

It occurs from coastal areas to the mountains, at elevations of approximately 0–1,375 metres. In Cyprus it is recorded as an indigenous, non-endemic subspecies, flowering mainly between March and May.

Description

The Kermes oak usually develops as a dense, many-branched shrub or a small tree. When protected from repeated fires, cutting and heavy grazing, it can grow taller and develop a strong trunk with a broad, dense crown.

The bark of young branches is relatively smooth, whereas the bark of older trunks becomes darker, rougher and fissured. Its crown remains green throughout the year because the leaves are not shed simultaneously during a particular season.

Leaves

The leaves are simple, alternate, small, tough and leathery. Their upper surface is usually dark green and glossy, while the lower surface is generally paler.

Leaf shape is highly variable. The blades may be ovate or elongated, and their margins often carry sharp, spine-tipped teeth. The tough leaves, thick outer surface and limited water loss are adaptations to the high temperatures and summer drought of the Mediterranean region.

Flowers and pollination

The Kermes oak is monoecious, meaning that separate male and female flowers are produced on the same plant. The male flowers occur in slender, hanging catkins, while the much smaller female flowers develop singly or in small groups.

The flowers are inconspicuous and pollination is accomplished mainly by the wind. In Cyprus, the principal flowering period extends from March to May, depending on altitude and local weather conditions.

Fruit and reproduction

The fruit is the characteristic acorn of the genus Quercus. Its lower part is enclosed within a woody cup, known as the cupule, which bears numerous hard and often prominently projecting scales.

Natural reproduction takes place through the acorns, but the plant can also regenerate vegetatively from its base and root system. Many acorns are eaten or transported by animals, which can consequently contribute to their dispersal.

Distribution in Cyprus

The Kermes oak is widely distributed in Cyprus. It occurs in shrublands, garrigue vegetation, rocky slopes, open woodland, the edges of pine forests, abandoned agricultural land and other Mediterranean habitats.

It can grow on limestone as well as other geological substrates and shows considerable tolerance of poor, dry and stony soils. Its broad altitudinal range demonstrates its ability to adapt to different local environmental conditions.

Adaptation to drought

The Kermes oak is exceptionally well adapted to the Mediterranean climate. Its small, leathery leaves reduce water loss, while its developed root system enables it to use moisture retained in deeper layers of the soil.

It can survive in areas experiencing prolonged summer drought, high temperatures and intense sunlight. This resilience does not mean that it is unaffected by prolonged drought or the continuous degradation of its habitat.

Relationship with fire and grazing

One of the most important characteristics of the Kermes oak is its ability to produce new shoots after fire or cutting. Even when its above-ground growth is destroyed, the living base and root system can enable the plant to regenerate.

Heavy grazing and repeated fires often maintain it as a low shrub. Although it can resprout after a fire, excessively frequent fires can exhaust established plants, destroy young individuals and prevent the development of mature trees.

Ecological importance

The dense crown of the Kermes oak provides shelter, nesting sites and protection for many birds, small mammals, reptiles and invertebrates. Its acorns are an important seasonal food source for several wild animals.

Its roots bind the soil and help limit erosion on dry, rocky slopes. Shade and organic material accumulating beneath the crown improve the local microenvironment and facilitate the establishment of other organisms.

Like other oaks, the Kermes oak forms important symbiotic relationships with mycorrhizal fungi. These fungi assist its roots in absorbing water and nutrients, while receiving organic compounds produced by the tree through photosynthesis.

Historical connection with red dye

The English name “Kermes oak” is associated with scale insects of the genus Kermes that live on Mediterranean oaks. These insects were historically used to produce an intense red dye known as kermes or crimson.

The dye was especially important in antiquity and later historical periods, before other natural and eventually synthetic dyes became widely available. The same linguistic root is connected with words used for rich crimson-red colours.

Traditional uses

The hard, dense wood of the Kermes oak was traditionally used as firewood and for the production of charcoal. Dense stands could also serve as natural barriers, while the leaves and acorns were locally used as animal fodder.

Intensive exploitation, cutting and grazing contributed to the persistence of low, shrubby growth over large areas. Older individuals allowed to develop without repeated disturbance demonstrate that the plant can attain the form of a proper tree.

Identification among the oaks of Cyprus

The Kermes oak can be distinguished from the Cyprus golden oak, Quercus alnifolia, principally by the lower surface of its leaves. The Cyprus golden oak has characteristic golden-yellow hairs beneath its leaves and is an endemic species of Cyprus closely associated with the igneous rocks of the Troodos Mountains.

Quercus infectoria subsp. veneris generally has larger, thinner, deciduous or semi-deciduous leaves. The Kermes oak, by contrast, has small, rigid evergreen leaves, usually bearing spine-tipped teeth, and an acorn cup covered with conspicuous hard scales.

Taxonomic note

The classification of this eastern Mediterranean oak is not treated consistently by all botanical authorities. Some sources recognise Quercus calliprinos Webb as a separate species, while others classify it as Quercus coccifera subsp. calliprinos or include it within the broadly defined and highly variable species Quercus coccifera L.

The Flora of Cyprus dynamic checklist records the Cypriot plant as Quercus coccifera subsp. calliprinos (Webb) Holmboe. That name is followed in this article to maintain consistency with the checklist of the flora of Cyprus.

Conservation

The Kermes oak is widespread in Cyprus, but local populations can be affected by land clearance, construction, road development, repeated fires, overgrazing and the fragmentation of natural habitats.

Protecting mature trees and extensive shrublands is important because they support biodiversity and contribute to the stability of Mediterranean ecosystems. In 2014, the Republic of Cyprus designated Quercus coccifera as its Tree of the Year.
