Με NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC και DISCOVERY CHANNEL

An Untapped Treasure – Naturalist George Konstantinou Speaks to “Politis”

PAVLOS NEOFYTOU, 10.07.2017

Suddenly, the coiled blunt-nosed viper raises itself and delivers a lightning-fast strike against his camera lens while he is filming it.

It is Monday afternoon in Geri. The temperature has reached 41°C, and the fan opposite us is running continuously. All around us, inside glass display cases along the living-room walls, rises an empire of shells. We sit in front of the computer and watch the protagonists of his documentaries: the two seals he encountered at Gialousa, the group of four vultures over Episkopi Bay, Little Owls feeding on lizards during the night, mouflons exchanging curious glances on a wet day, a Long-legged Buzzard proudly spreading its wings and, finally, a blunt-nosed viper lunging through the water of a river.

“Is a snake an intelligent animal?” I ask George Konstantinou.

“It is, although it operates mainly according to instinct.”

“Which animal is very intelligent?”

“Foxes, in particular, are extremely intelligent. Imagine how difficult it is to film ten minutes of footage of foxes. They are very difficult to approach; they notice you and detect your scent.”

A “bite” from a blunt-nosed viper

Suddenly, the coiled beige blunt-nosed viper that he encountered on the trunk of a tree feels threatened. It moves slightly, raises itself and delivers a lightning-fast strike against his camera lens while he is filming it.

And yet, to him, this particular strike seems completely harmless compared with the “bite” he feels he has received from public and private organisations. More than 650 documentaries about the biodiversity of Cyprus, thousands of photographs and an equally large amount of video footage remain unutilised by the state and private organisations, despite his repeated approaches to them.

This material is the product of 50 years of experience and direct contact with biodiversity, created by a man who knows where to find and how to approach almost anything, anywhere in Cyprus, at any hour and for as long as necessary. Among the small circle of naturalists and biodiversity researchers, George Konstantinou is considered the best person Cyprus has in the field of fossil research.

All support was withdrawn

As Mr Konstantinou explains to “Politis”, the organisation of which he is president, the Association for the Protection of the Natural Heritage and Biodiversity of Cyprus, received some financial grants before the economic crisis. These made it possible to organise activities such as photographic and fossil exhibitions and conferences. Subsequently, all this support disappeared, and the internet remained the only available means of promoting the biodiversity of Cyprus.

Although he has approached various public and private organisations regarding the use of his films and photographs, Mr Konstantinou has encountered nothing but closed doors.

“Apart from the completed documentaries, which number more than 650, I have filmed thousands of additional videos concerning the biodiversity of Cyprus,” he says. “This material could be used to produce dozens of documentaries about the natural world of Cyprus, including its reptiles, turtles, insects, plants, mammals and migratory birds.”

“Despite all this,” he adds, “nobody is interested.”

The work required to complete a documentary

“The process of producing a documentary involves an unimaginable amount of effort,” Mr Konstantinou explains. He may have to wait at one location for countless hours or even several days to obtain the footage he needs. Depending on the species of animal being studied, he must remain unnoticed, be daring and, of course, show great patience. On many occasions, the requirements of his work have forced him to spend the night outdoors.

The work at home, including editing the footage, follows afterwards.

“I work for more than 15 hours every day, either on films, photographs or websites, and I do all of this without receiving any payment,” he says.

He estimates that if the state undertook all this work officially, it would cost several million euros, since biologists, botanists, entomologists, ichthyologists, herpetologists and other specialists would have to be employed.

He performs all these tasks himself, drawing on the practical knowledge he has accumulated over five decades, together with what he has learned through study and discussions with scientists from Cyprus and abroad. On numerous occasions, he has also worked on the research projects of others, including scientists from foreign countries, acting as their guide and as the expert who helps them locate and understand what they are studying.

His experience with National Geographic and Discovery Channel

His disappointment with the situation in Cyprus was recently increased by his experience with the international documentary giants National Geographic and Discovery Channel. Both organisations approached him on their own initiative and expressed interest in his work.

“A few months ago,” Mr Konstantinou explains, “National Geographic contacted me and requested certain pieces of footage showing the blunt-nosed viper. However, when I told them that they would have to pay to use the footage, they replied that they were no longer interested.”

One month later, the same thing happened with Discovery Channel.

“How is it possible for companies worth millions to expect to receive my work free of charge?” Mr Konstantinou asks, clearly troubled by the situation.

Books that cannot be published

George Konstantinou has written a 350-page book about the snails of Cyprus. He informs us that approximately 120 species occur on the island, including freshwater species. To date, nothing else has been written on the subject—at least not on such an extensive scale. Nevertheless, there is no money available to publish the book.

“With the photographs I possess, I could write several other books as well, but the necessary funding does not exist,” he adds.

He discovered a dwarf elephant

At the same time, he contributes to studies undertaken by university students and professors, both in Cyprus and abroad. One of these involved professors from an overseas university and concerned the discovery of a dwarf elephant that predated the well-known dwarf elephant of Cyprus. The previously known animal weighed approximately 200–250 kilograms, while the newly discovered one weighed around 600 kilograms.

The tragic aspect of the case is that Mr Konstantinou and the team from his association discovered the fossils of this particular animal in the Xylofagou area in 2010. They also brought the scientists to Cyprus at their own expense.

The result was that the scientists prepared and published a study in which both the association and its contribution were ignored.
