Ποιά όμως η σχέση του με τον E. cypriotes; Αποτελεί προγονική του μορφή ή όχι;
Ποια είναι η ηλικία των ευρημάτων;
Speech by George Konstantinou at the 9th Scientific and Folklore Conference of Akanthou, June 24, 2017
Cyprus is considered an oceanic island and is the result of the collision of tectonic plates. Millions of years ago, the African Plate collided with the Eurasian Plate, causing the former to sink beneath the latter. During this subduction, the lighter rock from the submerged plate began to melt and then rise towards the Earth’s surface in the form of lava.
When this lava came into contact with the water, it solidified, resulting in the birth of Cyprus—initially through the formation of the Troodos Mountains and later the Pentadaktylos Mountains, which were two separate islands. The Mesaoria Plain subsequently formed and joined them, giving Cyprus its present shape.
Immediately after the first land emerged, the first forms of life began to appear. Insects travelled from neighbouring countries through the air and on floating tree trunks, while the first plants arrived as seeds transported by birds, the wind and the sea.
Of particular interest are the marine fossils of shells, marine organisms, fish and marine plants, as well as bones of marine mammals.
Marine fossils can be found throughout Cyprus, from the coasts to the interior and even at the summit of Troodos. Different species occur in many areas, owing to the climatic changes of the last several million years, which resulted in the extinction of many species and the appearance of new ones. This phenomenon has occurred several times in the past.
We are experiencing the same phenomenon today. As the temperature of the Mediterranean increases, many species from the Red Sea, entering through the Suez Canal, have begun to become established in our waters. Many of these species have destructive consequences for the species already present.
We have found fossils of marine mammals, including dolphins and enormous whales, in the wider Nicosia area, as well as teeth belonging to many different shark species and the bones of sea turtles.
The oldest fossils found in Cyprus are marine fossils from the Upper Triassic Period, dating back more than 200 million years. Naturally, Cyprus did not exist during that period. As the island emerged from the sea, it brought sediments from that ancient period to the surface.
These sediments are found in three different areas of Cyprus and contain important fossils, including various species of ammonites.
The plant fossils we have discovered are also important. They include leaves from various plants, pieces of wood, fruits and cones belonging to various unknown coniferous trees that once lived on our island but no longer exist.
Fossils of coniferous trees have been found in many areas of Nicosia, indicating that vast forests existed during the Pleistocene Period.
During the Upper Pleistocene, endemic island fauna was present.
During the Upper Pliocene and Pleistocene, there were intense and rapid climatic changes.
Glacial periods were followed by warmer interglacial periods.
Recent research has shown that there may have been as many as 30 glacial periods during the last three million years—one every 100,000 years.
During the glacial periods, the land area of Cyprus increased, but the island was never joined to the nearby mainland.
Only dispersal across the sea can explain the unique composition of Cyprus’s endemic fauna, as animals possessing the ability to swim reached the island.
Herbivorous animals are excellent swimmers, unlike large carnivores.
During these periods, sea level was approximately 100–120 metres lower than it is today. It is estimated that during the Pleistocene glaciations, Cyprus was approximately 30 kilometres from the nearest land, at the Gulf of Alexandretta, with many small islands lying between them.
Therefore, either by swimming or by floating on tree trunks, these animals were able to reach and colonize the island.
These animals included hippopotamuses (Phanourios minutus), elephants (E. cypriotes), initially of normal large size, the genet, several species of rodents—including shrews and spiny mice—land tortoises, freshwater turtles and reptiles.
The Pleistocene fauna of Cyprus, like that of all the Mediterranean islands—Crete, Sardinia, Rhodes, Tilos, Corsica and Sicily—is characterized as unbalanced because of the absence of carnivorous animals.
The only carnivorous animal known from the Pleistocene of Cyprus was a species of genet, Genetta plesictoides. It was a small carnivore, approximately the size of a cat, which fed on lizards, birds and rodents.
Plants and animals living in geographically isolated areas tend to develop endemic forms. One of the most impressive results of this isolation is the development of gigantic forms among small vertebrates—reptiles, birds and rodent mammals—and dwarf forms among large animals such as elephants, hippopotamuses and deer.
The causes of dwarfism and gigantism in island ecosystems include:
- the small size of islands compared with continental regions;
- reduced food resources;
- the absence of enemies;
- the reduction of the gene pool;
- inbreeding.
Following the effects of dwarfism, Cypriot elephants and hippopotamuses measured up to 1.5 metres in length and 75 centimetres in height and weighed approximately 250 kilograms. Their small size gave them greater agility and adaptability within the relatively mountainous and semi-mountainous environment of Cyprus and allowed them to survive on its limited food resources.
This was yet another miracle of nature, in which the sole purpose of dwarfism was to ensure the animals’ survival and the continuation of their species.
Over thousands of years, and because of their isolation within the island environment, these animals evolved into endemic animals of Cyprus.
When we describe them as endemic animals of Cyprus, we mean that they lived in Cyprus and nowhere else in the world.
The first report concerning the existence of these animals in Cyprus was made by the British palaeontologist Dorothea Bate in 1903.
These animals lived undisturbed in Cyprus for thousands of years, until people began arriving from neighbouring countries and colonizing the island approximately 11,000 years ago.
Those people were hunter-gatherers, meaning that they depended entirely on hunting and gathering for their survival, and they may have hunted these animals until their final extinction.
To date, approximately 40 sites containing the bones of dwarf hippopotamuses and dwarf elephants have been reported in Cyprus, with hippopotamus remains forming the overwhelming majority.
One of the most important sites is situated in Ayia Napa and has been partially excavated by the Geological Survey Department of Cyprus in cooperation with the University of Athens. So far, the bones of 180 hippopotamuses and one elephant have been found there, together with the remains of a species of wildcat.
According to estimates by the Geological Survey Department, the site still contains the bones of hundreds of animals.
At first sight, this location appears to have been a natural trap for these animals, as no evidence indicating a human presence was found.
Another extremely important site is situated at Aetokremmos, within the Akrotiri Sovereign Base Area. The site was excavated by the American archaeologist Alan Simmons and was considered the oldest location proving the presence of humans in Cyprus, approximately 10,500 years ago.
The finds consisted mainly of the bones of approximately 500 hippopotamuses and two elephants.
The site has been linked to human activity because the bones display evidence of burning and butchering. Tools used by humans were also discovered there.
The conclusion is that these prehistoric first inhabitants of Cyprus hunted these ancient animals, which appear to have constituted an important food source for them.
Numerous hippopotamus bones have also been discovered in the coastal cave of Agioi Saranta at Xylofagou.
It is important to mention that several sites where the bones of these animals have been discovered are connected with our religion, as is the case with this cave.
In the past, people who found the bones and teeth of these animals assumed that they were the remains of ascetics who had lived and died inside the cave and had therefore become saints.
Icons of saints were placed inside the cave, and the site is used as a church—hence its name, the Cave of the Forty Saints. Our Church has never accepted these local legends.
Another example in which hippopotamus bones became associated with religion is found at Agios Georgios in Kyrenia, where the Church of Agios Fanourios was built at the location where the bones were discovered.
People also collected the bones, believing them to be the remains of saints, ground them into powder and consumed them because they believed that they possessed miraculous healing properties.
A few metres from the church is a small cave in which the bones were discovered, and this cave is also used as a church.
In other cases, the fossils of these animals were attributed to the remains of dragons. This gave rise to place names such as Drakontospilios, Drakontotrypa, Drakontovounaro and the Dragon’s Cave.
Another site containing hippopotamus bones is situated in occupied Akanthou and was partially excavated by the Dutch scientist Paul Sondaar.
Following Professor Sondaar’s death, his university wanted the fossils he had transported to the Netherlands to be returned to Cyprus. For this purpose, they handed them over to the University of Athens, which refused to return them when the Ministry of the Interior requested them.
A site containing hippopotamus and elephant bones is situated at occupied Kormakitis and is known as Drakontovounaro.
At occupied Livera, there is another site containing hippopotamus and elephant bones inside an animal enclosure.
Other locations where the bones of these animals have been discovered include occupied Dikomo, occupied Kythrea and Kissonerga.
Almost all the sites mentioned above were caves—natural shelters—that have now collapsed.
Another extremely important site containing bones is situated in the coastal area of Xylofagou. The bones of hippopotamuses, elephants, a genet, birds of prey, a freshwater turtle and a land tortoise have been found there.
This site has not yet been associated with a human presence.
Its importance lies in the fact that elephant bones are much more numerous than hippopotamus bones. Elephant remains are rare, and hippopotamus bones have always vastly outnumbered them, whereas the opposite is true at this site.
The elephant tusks, teeth and bones are of particular scientific interest. The new findings confirm that the Elephas sp. represents a different species from E. cypriotes.
Its size is clearly larger than that of E. cypriotes.
What, however, is its relationship with E. cypriotes? Does it represent its ancestral form or not?
What is the age of the findings?
Dating carried out on E. cypriotes material has indicated that the remains belong to the Upper Pleistocene.
Through the actions and at the expense of our association, we brought palaeontologist George Iliopoulos of the University of Patras and Dr Victoria Herridge, a palaeontologist from the Natural History Museum in London, to Cyprus and showed them the site where the bones were discovered.
Following scientific measurements of our findings, they confirmed what we had believed from the beginning: that the remains belonged to a new elephant species measuring 1.80 metres in height and weighing approximately 600 kilograms.
At our invitation, David Reese of Yale University also conducted scientific measurements of the findings. He likewise assured us that they belonged to a new elephant species.
In cooperation with the University of Crete, we submitted material from the new elephant species for DNA extraction.
The entire matter remains under study, and we hope that scientific conclusions will soon become available and shed light on yet another part of the prehistory of our country.
I would also like to refer to Neolithic people, who, immediately following the extinction of Cyprus’s prehistoric animals, brought various animal species from neighbouring countries for breeding.
These animals included a species of wild cattle, sheep, pigs, foxes, mouflon and the deer Dama mesopotamica.
Some of them escaped from human control and returned to a wild state. These animals include the mouflon and the fox, both of which still survive today.
Another was the deer Dama mesopotamica, which lived on the island but became extinct approximately 500 years ago because of relentless hunting.
In closing, I would like to express my hope that the competent authorities will become sufficiently aware of the need to establish a scientific natural history museum, which our country lacks and urgently needs for educational, scientific and tourism purposes, but above all for research.
Knowledge of our past will provide the foundation for our continuation into the future.
I also hope that the competent authorities will recognize the urgent need to protect our natural heritage, which until now has been plundered by foreigners without any obstacle.
The protection of our natural heritage must become a political priority.
