Lesser flamingo (Phoenicopterus minor)
Little Bustard (Tetrax tetrax) - Χαμωτίδα

Cyprus lies at the crossroads of three continents and forms the largest migration corridor for migratory birds in the Mediterranean. Twice every year, birds travel from Europe and Eurasia towards Africa in autumn and make the reverse journey in spring.
More than 200 species of migratory birds use Cyprus either as an intermediate stop where they can rest before continuing their journey or as a place to spend the winter, while others breed here.
New records
Approximately 410 bird species, including migratory species, have been recorded in Cyprus, and this number increases every year with new records.
Because Cyprus lies close to continental countries, we sometimes receive completely unexpected visitors that have never previously been recorded on our island. From October 2014 until January 2018, five different bird species were recorded in Cyprus for the first time. They caused great surprise among birdwatchers not only in Cyprus but also internationally.
They caused such surprise because four of them are not migratory species, while the fifth is migratory but does not belong to our region. Their presence attracted many foreign and local birdwatchers and wildlife photographers to the areas where the birds were staying.
The five birds were:
- Striated Heron (Butorides striata)
- Lesser Flamingo (Phoenicopterus minor)
- Brown-necked Raven (Corvus ruficollis)
- Amur Falcon (Falco amurensis)
- White-eyed Gull (Ichthyaetus leucophthalmus)
Birdwatchers
The Striated Heron was first found by birdwatchers on 28 October 2014, feeding at the Zakaki pools in Limassol, beside the birdwatching hide.
It is not a migratory bird, and how it reached Cyprus remains unknown. Two possible explanations are that it followed other species of migratory herons or that it arrived here aboard a ship.
It is a beautiful, small heron belonging to the family Ardeidae. Its distribution extends from western Africa to Japan, Australia and South America. It feeds on fish, frogs and large aquatic insects.
It remained at Zakaki for several days and then departed for an unknown destination. During its stay, it fed mainly on small fish and dragonflies, which it caught with lightning-fast movements. It was quite approachable and provided excellent photographic opportunities for those who went to see it.
At Kouklia Dam
The Lesser Flamingo was first found by birdwatchers on 20 May 2015 at Kouklia Dam in the occupied part of the Famagusta District, where it was accompanying a flock of Greater Flamingos.
It is the smallest of all flamingo species and belongs to the family Phoenicopteridae. It occurs in two populations, one in Africa and the other in India.
It is not a migratory species and had apparently followed the other flamingos until it reached Cyprus. It feeds on spirulina, a freshwater microalga, and on microscopic shrimps.
Unfortunately for photographers, the bird remained continuously in the centre of the reservoir. Because the dam is very large, photographing it was extremely difficult. It stayed there for approximately one week before departing in an unknown direction.
The Brown-necked Raven, another exceptionally rare bird in Cyprus, was reported and found by Keith and Raija Howard at Cape Greco on 24 March 2016.
It belongs to the family Corvidae and is also not a migratory species. It occurs in southern Africa, Ethiopia, the Middle East, Kazakhstan, Iran and Pakistan.
Unfortunately, the bird remained for only two days, and very few people had the opportunity to see and photograph it.
The Brown-necked Raven closely resembles our familiar Common Raven (Corvus corax), known in Cyprus as the “klokkaros”. Common Ravens were once present in large numbers in Cyprus, but we have now almost exterminated them, just as we have done with the vultures, through the use of poison.
Only a few pairs remain in the occupied areas, mainly in the Pentadaktylos mountain range.
West of Arabia
The Amur Falcon was first found and reported by birdwatcher Matt Smith at the village of Agia Varvara in Paphos on 30 April 2016.
The bird was in the area with several Red-footed Falcons (Falco vespertinus), which visit Cyprus during migration. Many birdwatchers and wildlife photographers were observing these birds at Agia Varvara, but nobody had realised that one of them was the exceptionally rare Amur Falcon.
The two species look remarkably similar, and the differences between them are minimal.
The Amur Falcon is a small bird of prey belonging to the family Falconidae and feeds mainly on insects. It occurs west of Arabia, in Mongolia, China and Siberia, where it breeds. During winter, it migrates in large flocks to southern Africa.
This bird also remained in Cyprus for several days.
The White-eyed Gull was found and reported by birdwatcher Jane Stylianou in a coastal area at Meneou on 23 June 2017.
It is a small gull belonging to the family Laridae. It is not a migratory species and is endemic to the Red Sea, although individuals sometimes travel as far as Oman and Somalia.
The species is threatened, with only four to six thousand breeding pairs remaining worldwide, making it one of the rarest gulls in the world.
Unfortunately, it stayed for only two days before disappearing.
There are also several other exceptionally rare birds
I was fortunate enough to see four of these five birds, all exceptionally rare in Cyprus and quite possibly unlikely ever to return to the island. I took many photographs and videos of them.
Naturally, there are several other extremely rare birds with only two or three records in Cyprus. One example is the Slavonian Grebe (Podiceps auritus), which returned last month to the sea off Kouklia. This constituted the third record for Cyprus, while the previous, second record dated back to 1958.
Another exceptionally rare bird in Cyprus, the Little Bustard (Tetrax tetrax), also known as the Dwarf Turkey, was found and reported by my wife, Fani Konstantinou, and me in the Buffer Zone at the village of Geri on 3 December 2013.
This was the second record of the species in Cyprus; the first had occurred 34 years earlier.
The bird was remarkably tame and allowed people to approach quite closely. Its presence became an important event among birdwatchers, and everyone wanted to see it.
It remained in the area for two weeks, until some “heroic” hunter killed it. He shot it without knowing what it was and did so inside an area where hunting was prohibited. He then photographed the dead bird and displayed it, asking others to tell him what kind of bird it was.
