Panagia Angeloktisti – Byzantine Church in Kiti Village, Larnaca District, Cyprus

Text by George Konstantinou

Panagia Angeloktisti

The Church of Panagia Angeloktisti is located in Kiti village in the Larnaca District of Cyprus and is one of the most important Byzantine monuments on the island.

The present church dates mainly from the 11th century, but the history of the site extends much further back. The Byzantine church was constructed over the remains of a large Early Christian basilica of the 5th century, parts of which were incorporated into the later building.

The exceptional importance of Angeloktisti is particularly associated with the magnificent 6th-century mosaic preserved in the apse of the sanctuary. It is one of the most important surviving works of Early Christian art in Cyprus.

The Early Christian Basilica

Before the construction of the present Byzantine church, a substantial Early Christian basilica dating from the 5th century occupied the same site.

Parts of this earlier structure survived and were incorporated into the later church. Most importantly, the apse of the sanctuary was preserved, together with architectural features belonging to the earlier basilica.

Within the sanctuary there is also a surviving semicircular synthronon, the stepped seating arrangement traditionally used by the clergy in Early Christian churches.

These remains make Angeloktisti particularly valuable because several different phases of Christian architecture can be observed within a single monument.

The Tradition Behind the Name “Angeloktisti”

The Greek name Angeloktisti literally means “built by angels.”

According to local religious tradition, inhabitants who had moved into the area decided to construct a church dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

The tradition relates that divine or angelic intervention was involved in the construction of the church, giving rise to the name Panagia Angeloktisti – the Virgin Mary whose church was built by angels.

This account belongs to the religious and folkloric tradition surrounding the monument and should be distinguished from the archaeological evidence concerning the actual construction phases of the church.

The Byzantine Church of the 11th Century

The main church visible today was constructed during the 11th century, incorporating the surviving apse of the earlier Early Christian basilica.

Architecturally, the church belongs to the cross-in-square domed type, one of the characteristic forms of Middle Byzantine ecclesiastical architecture.

The monument as it survives today, however, is the result of several building phases. Chapels and other architectural elements were added over the centuries, creating an exceptional complex in which Early Christian, Byzantine and Frankish architectural traditions coexist.

The Famous 6th-Century Mosaic

The greatest artistic treasure of Panagia Angeloktisti is preserved in the semidome of the sanctuary apse.

It is an exceptionally rare 6th-century wall mosaic, dating to the Early Byzantine period.

The Virgin Mary is depicted standing against a brilliant gold background, holding the Christ Child on her left arm. On either side stand the Archangels Michael and Gabriel.

The Virgin is identified by an inscription as “Η ΑΓΙΑ ΜΑΡΙΑ” – “The Holy Mary.”

The composition is of exceptional importance in the development of Christian iconography and represents an early monumental form of the Virgin and Child imagery that would later become one of the most recognisable subjects in Byzantine art.

An Exceptionally Rare Work of Early Byzantine Art

The Angeloktisti mosaic is of enormous importance for the study of Early Christian and Byzantine art.

Its artistic quality has been compared with the famous Early Byzantine mosaics of Ravenna in Italy, while its survival in its original architectural setting makes it particularly valuable.

Very few monumental Christian mosaics from this period survived the centuries that followed, especially the destruction associated with the Iconoclastic period of Byzantine history.

The survival of the Angeloktisti mosaic for approximately fifteen centuries therefore makes the church significant not only for Cyprus but also for the broader history of Byzantine and Mediterranean art.

The Chapel of Agioi Anargyroi

During the 12th century, a barrel-vaulted chapel dedicated to Agioi Anargyroi, Saints Cosmas and Damian, was added to the northern side of the main church.

The chapel may also have had a funerary function, as medieval burials have been discovered outside its northern side.

Its construction represents another phase in the continuous development of the Angeloktisti complex and demonstrates that the church remained an important religious centre throughout the medieval period.

The Latin Chapel

Another particularly interesting addition dates from the period of Frankish rule in Cyprus.

During the late 13th or early 14th century, a second chapel was constructed on the southern side of the Byzantine church. It is generally known as the Latin Chapel and was intended for the religious needs of the Latin Christian community.

Its architecture displays characteristic Gothic elements, creating a striking contrast with the Byzantine architecture of the main church.

Above its entrance are three coats of arms, one of which belongs to the important Frankish Gibelet family, which was associated with the chapel.

Inside is also the inscribed funerary slab of Simone Renier de Gibelet, who died in 1302, providing further evidence for the funerary use of the chapel.

Wall Paintings, Iconostasis and Icons

Panagia Angeloktisti preserves much more than its famous Early Christian mosaic.

The church also contains Byzantine wall paintings, including works dating from the 11th century, together with artistic additions from later periods.

A wooden iconostasis dating from the 16th century is preserved in the church, while its collection of icons includes works dating from approximately the 13th to the 19th centuries.

The monument can therefore be viewed as a remarkable historical record of changing artistic styles and religious traditions over many centuries.

An Ancient Icon

An important old icon associated with the church is also traditionally dated to around the 10th century.

It depicts the Virgin Mary together with Saint Lazarus and Saint Luke the Evangelist.

The figures are linked in Cypriot ecclesiastical tradition with the early history of Christianity at ancient Kition. Such traditions form an important part of the religious heritage associated with Kiti and the wider Larnaca region, although they should be distinguished from archaeological evidence.

Panagia Angeloktisti and UNESCO

The Church of Panagia Angeloktisti is not currently inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

However, in 2015 it was included on the Tentative List of Cyprus, which contains properties that the Republic of Cyprus may consider nominating for World Heritage status in the future.

The UNESCO documentation particularly emphasises the exceptional importance of the 6th-century apse mosaic, the architectural development of the church complex and the coexistence of Byzantine and Frankish cultural influences.

Its inclusion on the Tentative List reflects the importance of Angeloktisti not simply as a local church but as a monument of wider international cultural significance.

Fifteen Centuries of History

One of the most remarkable features of Panagia Angeloktisti is the extraordinary chronological depth preserved at a single site.

The 5th-century Early Christian basilica, the 6th-century mosaic, the 11th-century Byzantine church, the 12th-century Chapel of Agioi Anargyroi, the medieval Latin Chapel, Byzantine wall paintings, icons and later iconostasis all represent different chapters in the history of the monument.

Few churches in Cyprus preserve such a clear combination of architectural and artistic elements spanning so many different periods.

Most importantly, the church has continued to fulfil its original religious purpose, preserving a tradition of Christian worship at the site extending over many centuries.

One of the Most Important Byzantine Monuments of Cyprus

Panagia Angeloktisti at Kiti is one of the outstanding monuments of the Early Christian and Byzantine heritage of Cyprus.

Its rare mosaic of the Virgin and Child accompanied by the Archangels, the surviving remains of the Early Christian basilica, the Middle Byzantine architecture and the later Frankish additions combine to create a monument of exceptional historical, religious and artistic importance.

Angeloktisti is also a remarkable example of how a religious site can evolve continuously through different historical periods while preserving elements of each generation that used and transformed it.

Recording and photographing monuments such as Panagia Angeloktisti contributes to the preservation and promotion of the archaeological, religious, artistic and cultural heritage of Cyprus for future generations.
