Cyprus Green Toad - Bufotes cypriensis - Πράσινος Φρύνος - Endemic to Cyprus
1)Cyprus Green Toad - Bufotes cypriensis - Πράσινος Φρύνος - Endemic to Cyprus

Amphibians are ectothermic, tetrapod vertebrate species that live both in water and on land and belong to the class Amphibia, hence the word amphibian, from amphi and bios, meaning double life.
Amphibians are found in many habitats, but almost all species need water in order to reproduce. All amphibians begin their lives in water as larvae and breathe through gills, while later, in their final larval stage, they develop lungs that allow them to breathe outside the water. Some species can also breathe through their skin in addition to their lungs.
Amphibians are divided into three orders: salamanders, caecilians, which live underground and are the least known of the amphibians, and frogs and toads.
It is estimated that there are more than 7,000 amphibian species on the planet, about 90% of which are frogs.
Of the 7,000 amphibian species found on the planet, only three occur in Cyprus: two species of frogs and one species of toad.
Frogs and toads live near or in rivers, lakes, marshes and even artificial ponds in the yards of houses. It is estimated that there are more than 2,000 species on the planet. They feed on insects and worms, which they catch with their long tongues.
Their larvae are called tadpoles. As tadpoles, they have a rounded body and a tail that allows them to swim, and they feed mainly on plant material and algae. In their final stage as tadpoles, they develop their four legs and their tail shrinks and disappears, thus transforming into their final form.
There are some very dangerous species of frogs around the world that can even cause death in humans, but fortunately the three amphibian species we have in Cyprus are completely harmless to humans.
The three amphibian species found in Cyprus are:
- Cyprus Green Toad – Bufotes cypriensis – Endemic to Cyprus
- Levant Water Frog – Pelophylax bedriagae
- Middle East Tree Frog – Hyla savignyi
Cyprus Green Toad – Bufotes cypriensis
The Cyprus Green Toad is an anuran amphibian species belonging to the family Bufonidae, and it is found only in Cyprus, as it is an endemic species of Cyprus.
It reaches a size of 10 centimetres, and its colour resembles military camouflage, although it can change colour depending on the temperature.
It is a terrestrial and nocturnal species, although during the breeding season it can also be seen during the day. It feeds on insects and worms.
During the day, it hides in burrows, holes, piles of stones, beneath various objects and even in caves.
In spring, it mates in the water, and the female lays her eggs in strings that can reach up to four metres in length. Tadpoles hatch from the eggs and remain in the water until they develop into fully formed toads and leave the water.
When threatened by predators, they secrete a defensive toxic substance from glands in their skin. This substance has a particularly unpleasant taste and is irritating, thus discouraging predators from eating them. Nevertheless, hedgehogs do not appear to be bothered by it and eat them.
This substance is harmless to humans. If you hold this toad in your hands and then put your finger in your mouth, you can taste the very unpleasant flavour of this substance.
The species is protected under European Directive 92/43/EEC and Cyprus Law 153(I)2003.
Levant Water Frog – Pelophylax bedriagae
The Levant Water Frog, or Eastern Frog, is a diurnal frog belonging to the family Ranidae and is found in the eastern Mediterranean, Africa, Anatolia and Europe.
It reaches a size of 15 centimetres, and its colour varies according to the environment in which it lives.
It is found wherever there is permanent water. It feeds on insects and other invertebrates, worms and even small dead fish.
It also mates in spring in the water and lays its eggs in masses in the water, from which the tadpoles hatch. It can lay up to 100,000 eggs.
It can often be seen basking on the banks very close to the water.
It is protected under European Directive 92/43/EEC.
Middle East Tree Frog – Hyla savignyi
The Middle East Tree Frog is an endemic species of the Middle East. It is nocturnal and belongs to the family Hylidae.
It is a small species of frog, and its size does not exceed five centimetres.
It also feeds on insects and other invertebrates, as well as worms.
It is found on low vegetation close to water, where it clings with its feet like suction cups. During the day, it sleeps in shady and cool places, attached to grasses or the leaves of shrubs.
Its colour is mainly green, providing it with excellent camouflage, and it can be very difficult to see within its green surroundings.
It also lays its eggs in water during spring, producing up to 2,000 eggs.
It is protected under European Directive 92/43/EEC and Cyprus Law 153(I)2003.
Threats and Importance of Amphibians in Cyprus
The enemies of frogs in Cyprus include snakes, cats and aquatic birds that feed on them, as well as, of course, the human factor through the destruction of their habitats and the excessive use of pesticides, which results in the death of the species on which frogs feed.
Another major threat to these species is the prolonged drought that very often affects our country, as these species require water to complete their life cycle.
The Cyprus Green Toad is at greater risk because it usually lives far from lakes and depends for its reproduction on seasonal pools formed by the flow of rivers and streams such as the Yialias and Pedieos. Fortunately, during the last two years these rivers have had a very good flow of water, and as a result the species has reproduced in its thousands.
Frogs are a very important source of food for many species, including reptiles, aquatic birds and freshwater fish. Even humans in some countries consider certain species of frogs to be an excellent delicacy.
