Crescent Dart – Agrotis trux (Hübner, [1824]) – Cyprus
TEXT AND PHOTOS: GEORGE KONSTANTINOU – GERI, 15 October 2014
Agrotis trux, known as the Crescent Dart, belongs to the family Noctuidae and subfamily Noctuinae. Its polyphagous caterpillars are associated with the soil, feeding on roots and plant parts close to the ground. Its presence in Cyprus is documented. The photographs accompanying this post were taken at Geri on 15 October 2014.
Description and identification. The wingspan is usually 35–42 mm. Colour varies considerably, with the forewings ranging from pale beige and light grey-brown to darker shades. The characteristic noctuid markings comprise the orbicular, reniform and smaller claviform stigmata, often outlined in black. A useful identification feature is the dark mark on the leading edge near the forewing tip. The hindwings are whitish to pale cream. Male antennae are pectinate. Identification relies on a combination of features, since colour alone is variable.
Distribution. The species has a principally circum-Mediterranean distribution, occurring in southern Europe, North Africa, the eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East. It is also recorded from the Canary Islands, Turkey, Iraq, Iran and the Arabian Peninsula. Northwards, it reaches parts of the southern Alps, while along the Atlantic coasts its range extends to Britain and Ireland. Confirmed autumn records from Cyprus include observations in October and November.
Habitat and behaviour. It favours warm, dry environments with sparse vegetation and exposed soil. Caterpillars have been found on rocky slopes and in bare patches among vegetation where suitable fine soil material is available. In Crete it is reported from dry meadows, whereas in Britain it is particularly associated with rocky coastal cliffs. Adults are attracted to both light and sugar bait.
Life cycle and flight period. Seasonal occurrence differs substantially between regions. In Britain, the principal flight period is reported as July and August. By contrast, the study of Israel’s Noctuinae describes one generation annually, with adults from September to April and a peak in October and November. Cypriot records confirm the presence of adults in autumn.
In European observations, the caterpillar overwinters and becomes fully grown around April. In the Canary Islands, nearly fully grown caterpillars have been found as early as January. During the day they remain shallowly buried in the soil. Before pupation, a prepupal resting period lasting several weeks may occur.
Host plants and feeding. Caterpillars feed on roots and low plant parts of various herbaceous plants. Reported food plants include Taraxacum species in the family Asteraceae and Polygonum in the family Polygonaceae. British sources specifically mention these plants as rearing food, whereas wild caterpillars use low-growing coastal vegetation. The BRC database records Polygonum aviculare as captive rearing food for the subspecies A. trux lunigera. These reports do not establish the use of the same plants by caterpillars in Cyprus.
Conservation status. The 2026 European Red List of Moths classifies Agrotis trux as Least Concern (LC) for both Europe and the European Union of 27 member states. This assessment concerns those geographical regions and is not a separate evaluation of the Cypriot population.
