Spiny starfish – Marthasterias glacialis (Linnaeus, 1758) – Cyprus

A striking native starfish of Cyprus
The spiny starfish, Marthasterias glacialis, is a large and distinctive echinoderm belonging to the family Asteriidae. It is native to the Mediterranean Sea and also occurs in the eastern Atlantic Ocean.
In Cyprus it inhabits rocky and mixed seabeds. Despite being called a starfish, it is not a fish but a marine invertebrate related to sea urchins, sea cucumbers and brittle stars.
The characteristic surface of its body, with prominent rows of strong spines, makes it relatively easy to distinguish from other Mediterranean starfish. It is an active predator and plays an important role in the structure of benthic marine communities.
Description
The body consists of a relatively small central disc and usually five long, narrow arms that gradually taper towards their tips. The proportion between the small disc and the elongated arms gives the animal its characteristic star-shaped appearance.
Three conspicuous longitudinal rows of conical spines extend along the upper surface of each arm. The spines are generally whitish and often have purple or violet tips.
The underside of the body carries numerous tube feet arranged in grooves along the arms. These are used for movement, attachment to the seabed, handling food and pulling apart the shells of certain prey.
The mouth is situated in the centre of the underside. This position allows the starfish to place itself directly over its prey while feeding.
Spines and pedicellariae
Clusters of microscopic structures called pedicellariae surround the larger spines. These are small pincer-like appendages capable of opening and closing.
The pedicellariae help protect the body surface from small organisms, larvae and particles attempting to settle on it. They also contribute to cleaning the body and may assist in capturing or handling small prey.
The combination of three rows of large spines and surrounding clusters of pedicellariae is one of the most important identification features of the species.
The spines should not be confused with venomous stings. Nevertheless, the animal should be observed without unnecessary handling because lifting it from the seabed may injure it or damage its delicate tube feet.
Colour and size
The colour of Marthasterias glacialis is highly variable. Individuals may be brown, greyish green, yellowish, reddish or purple. Different colours often occur on the same animal, particularly around the spines and towards the tips of the arms.
This variation is part of the natural diversity of the species and may also be influenced by age, habitat and local environmental conditions.
The usual body diameter is approximately 25–30 centimetres, although large individuals can reach about 70 centimetres across. It is therefore one of the largest starfish occurring in the Mediterranean and eastern Atlantic.
Movement and the water vascular system
Like other starfish, the species possesses a water vascular system. This is an internal network of canals filled with seawater that controls the operation of the numerous tube feet.
Through the coordinated extension and contraction of the tube feet, the starfish can move over rocks, sand, gravel and other surfaces. The feet also enable it to remain firmly attached to the seabed in areas exposed to strong waves or currents.
Although its movement appears slow, it is continuous and effective. The animal can explore the seabed while searching for food and approach concentrations of bivalves or other potential prey.
Regeneration
Marthasterias glacialis can regenerate damaged or lost portions of its arms. Regeneration is a slow process that requires considerable energy.
This ability does not mean that the starfish is unharmed when an arm is removed. Collection, rough handling or deliberate cutting can result in severe injury, infection or death.
Starfish should therefore remain in their natural environment and should be photographed without being moved or removed from the water.
Diet and feeding behaviour
The spiny starfish is a carnivorous, opportunistic predator. It feeds mainly on bivalve molluscs such as mussels, as well as gastropods, crustaceans, other echinoderms and various benthic invertebrates.
When attacking a bivalve, it attaches its tube feet to both valves and applies steady pressure. It does not need to open the shell completely; a very small gap may be sufficient.
The starfish can extend part of its stomach through its mouth and into the opening of the shell. Digestion begins outside the body, and the liquefied tissues of the prey are gradually transferred into the digestive system.
This feeding method allows starfish to consume animals protected by hard shells. Their diet may vary according to depth, habitat and the availability of suitable prey.
Reproduction and life cycle
The species reproduces mainly sexually. Males and females release their gametes into the surrounding seawater, where external fertilisation takes place.
The fertilised eggs develop into microscopic planktonic larvae. These remain in the water column for a period and may be transported considerable distances by marine currents.
After completing larval development, they settle on the seabed and undergo metamorphosis into juvenile starfish. As they grow, they gradually acquire the form, spines and colouration of the adults.
Seasonal aggregations preceding spawning have been observed in some northeastern Atlantic populations. The precise reproductive season of the Cypriot population has not been sufficiently documented and should not automatically be assumed to be identical to that of more northerly populations.
Habitat and depth
Marthasterias glacialis can live on several types of seabed. It occurs along rocky shores and underwater rock faces, as well as on gravel, mixed sediment, sand, mud and areas containing scattered stones.
It has been recorded from the lower intertidal and very shallow subtidal zone to depths approaching 200 metres. Its presence across such a wide depth range demonstrates an ability to tolerate different conditions of light, temperature, water movement and food availability.
In the Mediterranean it may also occur near Posidonia oceanica meadows, particularly on rocks and in open areas around the meadows, although it is not restricted to this habitat.
Distribution in Cyprus
The spiny starfish is a natural component of the marine fauna of Cyprus. It can be encountered on suitable rocky and mixed seabeds around the island, from shallow coastal sites to deeper waters.
Its actual distribution is probably wider than the available observations suggest. Many individuals inhabit depths that are not routinely surveyed by divers, while their variable colouration may make them difficult to notice against the seabed.
Records accompanied by a clear date, precise locality, depth and photographic documentation can help improve our understanding of the distribution and ecology of the species in Cypriot waters.
Global distribution
The species occurs in the eastern Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. It has been recorded from northern parts of the eastern Atlantic southwards to the coast of West Africa, as well as throughout many regions of the Mediterranean.
Older literature sometimes attributed a much wider distribution to Marthasterias glacialis, including southern Africa. The southern African populations are now treated taxonomically as a separate species, Marthasterias africana. Older distribution maps must therefore be interpreted carefully.
Cyprus lies within the natural Mediterranean range of Marthasterias glacialis. The species is neither alien nor invasive on the island.
Ecological role
As a large benthic predator, the spiny starfish can influence the abundance and distribution of bivalves and other invertebrates. Through predation, it contributes to maintaining the balance between different groups of seabed organisms.
Its presence increases the complexity of food-web relationships in rocky and mixed-bottom ecosystems. Remains from its meals may also be consumed by smaller animals and decomposers.
Changes in the abundance of large predators such as starfish may produce cascading effects throughout benthic communities. Maintaining healthy populations is therefore part of the broader protection of marine biodiversity.
Threats and relationship with humans
The species may be affected locally by pollution, degradation of coastal habitats, abandoned fishing gear, mechanical disturbance of the seabed and accidental capture in fishing equipment.
The collection of starfish for decoration or as souvenirs also causes unnecessary mortality. Starfish should not be removed from the sea for photographs, as exposure to air causes severe stress and can interfere with normal body functions.
When a starfish is encountered during diving or snorkelling, the best practice is to photograph it in its original position without lifting, moving or touching its tube feet.
Conservation status
Marthasterias glacialis does not have an individual global assessment on the IUCN Red List and is therefore reported as Not Evaluated (NE).
The absence of a global assessment does not necessarily mean that the species is secure in every locality. Populations may be affected by marine environmental quality, the availability of prey and the destruction or alteration of benthic habitats.
More systematic information is required in Cyprus concerning its abundance, population structure, reproductive biology and possible long-term population changes.
