Larnaca Salt Lake Then and Now – Necessary Protection Measures (Web TV) – By George Konstantinou – Politis Newspaper, 24 December 2017

GEORGE KONSTANTINOU, 24 December 2017

Text by George Konstantinou

Larnaca Salt Lake lies southwest of the city of Larnaca. It is one of the two salt-lake systems found in our country and one of the most important wetlands in Cyprus. It is a complex comprising the main salt lake, Lake Orphani, Lake Soros, Lake Spiros and a small lake situated within the airport grounds.

The salt lake is recognised as a wetland of international importance and has been protected under the Ramsar Convention since 2001. It was also designated a Special Protection Area in 2005. Larnaca Salt Lake was designated Ramsar Site No. 1081.

Most of its water comes from rainfall and the underground infiltration of seawater, as the salt lake lies below sea level. It is a shallow lake that normally holds water from November until April. The water then evaporates, leaving the salt behind and giving the salt lake the appearance of a snow-covered landscape.

In past centuries

In the past, the area of the salt lake was connected to the sea, forming a bay that was used as a harbour in previous centuries. Several stone anchors dating from the Late Bronze Age have been found within the salt lake. These provide evidence for the existence of a harbour used mainly for the copper trade and transportation. Fossils of various marine organisms that we found around the salt lake—including crabs, sea urchins and seashells—belong to species that live only in the open sea. Many ancient settlements have also been discovered around the salt lake.

Gradually, over the centuries, the entrance to the harbour became blocked. The harbour was transformed first into a lagoon and eventually into the salt lake that we know today. For centuries, it was an important source of salt for the inhabitants of Cyprus.

Salt was a very important Cypriot export during the periods of Venetian and Ottoman rule. During British rule, it was used only for local consumption. Salt was collected in August by workers who filled large baskets with it and carried them to the shore using donkeys. Later, small rail wagons were used to transport the salt, which was piled into pyramid-shaped heaps. Salt extraction continued until the 1980s.

Thousands of flamingos

Larnaca Salt Lake is known internationally for the thousands of Greater Flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus) that visit it during the winter months, creating a spectacular sight.

Large flocks arrive in Cyprus during winter because severe winter conditions prevail in the northern countries where they had previously been. Thousands of flamingos use the salt lake as a stopping place where they can rest and feed before continuing their journey towards Africa. Several thousand, however, remain and spend the winter here when they find suitable water and feeding conditions.

Thousands of other birds also find refuge at the salt lake, including ducks, geese, gulls, terns, Black-winged Stilts, lapwings and many other waders protected under international legislation.

The principal food of the flamingos and many other aquatic birds consists of the two species of brine shrimp that live and reproduce in the salt lakes: Artemia salina and Branchinella spinosa. Artemia reproduces in the main salt lake, which has the highest salinity, while Branchinella spinosa reproduces in the other lakes, where salinity is lower.

Artemia hatches following the first inflow of rainwater into the salt lake, usually during November or December, and feeds on a unicellular alga. As the water level begins to fall through evaporation, salinity increases and the brine shrimp begin producing their eggs.

The eggs are extremely resistant and survive within the salt and under the high summer temperatures after the salt lake has dried out. They remain there until the first inflow of water causes them to hatch.

During summer, when the lake is dry, something resembling pink lace can be seen around its margins. These are Artemia eggs, which are trampled on and destroyed by people walking freely around the salt lake. This is an extremely delicate ecosystem, and any disruption can have destructive consequences for the food chain.

A delicate ecosystem

There are many dangers that can affect this delicate ecosystem. Fertilisers used by farmers in neighbouring fields can be carried into the lake by rainwater runoff, contaminating its vulnerable fauna. Toxic waste may also be dumped by irresponsible individuals into the streams that supply the salt lake with water.

In the past, a shooting range operated within the salt-lake area and contaminated it with lead shot, resulting in the deaths of several flamingos. Hunting was also permitted in some parts of the salt lake. Fortunately, these problems have now been addressed, but much more remains to be done.

One of the many continuing problems is the severe disturbance experienced by the birds. Thousands of people visit the area to see the flamingos. Many of them, often unintentionally and through lack of awareness, try to obtain a close photograph. Some even enter the water or fly camera-equipped remote-controlled aircraft—drones—causing the birds to panic.

Flamingos usually feed along the shores of the salt lake because large numbers of brine shrimp are found there. By disturbing them, visitors force the birds to move towards the centre of the lake, where they may be unable to feed. Many people also walk their dogs in the area and allow them to enter the water, frightening the birds.

The area around the Hala Sultan Tekke Mosque

People are not entirely to blame, because there will always be those who become excited and want to approach the birds more closely. The responsible authorities must assume their responsibilities by installing information signs throughout the area and fencing off the salt lake.

It is, of course, an extensive area and such a project would be costly. Nevertheless, it could be implemented through European LIFE programmes, as was done at Oroklini Lake. Several islands should also be constructed within the salt lake to provide resting areas and safe breeding places for the various bird species that nest there. Small wooded areas should also be created around the salt lake.

The area surrounding the Hala Sultan Tekke Mosque, which borders the salt lake, has become filled with countless stray cats. People who no longer want their cats abandon them there. These cats subsequently destroy the nests of birds breeding along the shores of the salt lake and also affect the fauna of the wider area.

Hundreds of foreign and local birdwatchers visit the salt lake, and several birdwatching hides should be constructed to accommodate them. One birdwatching hide already exists, but it is not situated in the appropriate location. This form of tourism has begun to grow in Cyprus and should not be ignored.

Larnaca Salt Lake is part of our natural heritage, and we are obliged to protect it as the apple of our eye, thereby contributing to the conservation of wildlife on our planet.

Following the most recent rainfall, the salt lake has accumulated a considerable amount of water. The first flamingos have arrived, and more are expected by January. We can observe them without leaving our cars, since the road runs beside the salt lake. Let us enjoy them again this year while showing greater respect for these magnificent birds.
