The Beautiful Wild Ducks of Cyprus (Web TV) – By George Konstantinou – Politis Newspaper, 27 March 2018

GEORGE KONSTANTINOU, 27 March 2018

Text, photographs and video by George Konstantinou

All the ducks found on our planet belong to the family Anatidae. They are aquatic birds found throughout the world, and there are approximately 75 different species.

They are encountered wherever water is present: lakes, dams, rivers, streams, swamps, marshes, temporary pools and even the sea.

The males are far more beautiful than the females, displaying magnificent iridescent colours and patterns in their plumage.

They are migratory birds and travel in flocks, sometimes consisting of hundreds of individuals.

They are omnivorous birds and feed on aquatic plants, grasses, seeds, amphibians, insects, worms and fish.

Cyprus does not have an abundance of water or lakes. Nevertheless, during winter and the migration season we encounter several duck species. The most common and familiar are the Mallard, Anas platyrhynchos, and the Common Teal, Anas crecca, both of which are also classified as gamebirds. Several duck species also breed in Cyprus.

Some of the duck species encountered in our country are:

Mallard – Anas platyrhynchos – Prasinokefali

This is the most common species encountered in our country, primarily during winter. It is also classified as a gamebird.

It is a cosmopolitan bird that is well known and widely distributed throughout the world. The male has an iridescent green head, while the female is brown.

It breeds during spring, constructing a well-concealed nest on the ground and laying up to 15 eggs. The eggs are incubated exclusively by the female for 28 days.

The Mallard also breeds successfully in Cyprus during spring at many dams and lakes, including Oroklini Lake, Athalassa Lake and the Bishop’s Pool at Akrotiri.

Common Teal – Anas crecca – Sarselli, Kirkiri

This is a common duck in our country and is also classified as a gamebird. It is the smallest of all the duck species found worldwide.

It nests on the ground and lays up to 12 eggs, which are incubated exclusively by the female. It prefers shallow pools of standing water and is also omnivorous. It does not breed in Cyprus.

During the winter months, it can be observed at dams and lakes, including Oroklini Lake and Athalassa Lake.

I mention Oroklini and Athalassa lakes as the best places because they are protected and have birdwatching hides. As the birds at these lakes remain undisturbed and are accustomed to the presence of people, they approach relatively closely and can therefore be observed easily.

Common Shelduck – Tadorna tadorna – Varvara, Alaourtos

This is a beautiful duck that visits our country during the winter months. It prefers brackish wetlands, particularly Larnaca Salt Lake and Akrotiri Salt Lake.

At Larnaca Salt Lake, these birds can be seen very early in the morning feeding on mud outside the water near the road.

It nests on the ground and lays up to ten eggs, which are incubated exclusively by the female. It does not breed in Cyprus.

Eurasian Wigeon – Anas penelope – Sfyrechtari

This is a small duck that is relatively rare in Cyprus and visits during winter. It also nests on the ground near water. It does not breed in Cyprus.

It visits the Meneou sewage-treatment ponds behind Larnaca Airport every year. The Department of Forests has installed a birdwatching hide there, from which hundreds of aquatic birds can be observed during the winter months.

Northern Pintail – Anas acuta – Souvlopapia, Souvlonoura, Psalida

This duck visits Cyprus in relatively small numbers. It prefers shallow fresh and brackish waters.

It is called “Souvlopapia” or “Souvlonoura” because of the beautiful male’s long, pointed black tail.

It nests on the ground and lays up to 12 eggs, which are incubated exclusively by the female. It does not breed in Cyprus.

It can be seen during winter at Achna Dam, Oroklini Lake and Larnaca Salt Lake.

Northern Shoveler – Anas clypeata – Chouliaropapia, Koutalas, Saxana

This is a common duck in Cyprus, arriving in satisfactory numbers during winter.

It nests on the ground and lays up to 12 eggs, which are incubated exclusively by the female. It does not breed in Cyprus.

It is called “Chouliaropapia” or “Koutalas” because of its broad, flattened bill.

During winter, hundreds of these birds gather at the Meneou sewage-treatment ponds behind Larnaca Airport, Oroklini Lake and Athalassa Lake.

Red-crested Pochard – Netta rufina – Ferentini, Ropalopapia

This is a relatively rare species in Cyprus and perhaps the most beautiful duck to visit the island.

The male has an orange head and black breast, while the female is light grey.

It breeds during spring near water, nesting among dense vegetation and laying up to 12 eggs. It is a diving species that submerges to reach aquatic plants.

During recent years, several pairs have returned annually to breed at Oroklini Lake, although they rarely approach people.

Ferruginous Duck – Aythya nyroca – Valtopapia

This is a common duck in Cyprus during the winter months and has a very distinctive white eye.

It breeds during spring, nesting on the ground near water among dense vegetation. It lays up to 12 eggs, which are incubated exclusively by the female. The birds sometimes construct floating nests near aquatic plants.

During recent years, several pairs have bred at the Bishop’s Pool at Akrotiri. Several years ago, they also bred at Athalassa Lake.

Hundreds of Ferruginous Ducks can be encountered in the occupied areas at the Mia Milia sewage-treatment ponds. Hundreds of other aquatic birds can also be observed there. These are several large ponds surrounded by reedbeds, and the area has developed into an excellent wetland.

Gadwall – Anas strepera – Kapaklis, Kannaoura

This is a relatively rare bird in Cyprus. It does not breed on the island.

Ruddy Shelduck – Tadorna ferruginea – Kastanopapia

This duck visits Cyprus in relatively small numbers. It is slightly larger than the other ducks and has beautiful chestnut-coloured plumage.

It nests far away from water in depressions, burrows, hollow trees and even on cliffs several metres high. It does not breed in Cyprus.

Every year, several birds spend the winter at the Meneou sewage-treatment ponds behind Larnaca Airport and at Larnaca Salt Lake.

Tufted Duck – Aythya fuligula – Ppiskountoura, Mavrokefali

This is a rare species in Cyprus, with only a few birds reported each year.

It is a diving species that submerges to find food. It does not breed in Cyprus.

During recent years, several pairs have been reported at Athalassa Lake during winter.

Garganey – Anas querquedula – Sarsela, Masouratzis

This is also a relatively rare species in Cyprus. It does not breed on the island.

White-headed Duck – Oxyura leucocephala – Kefaloudi, Kefalopapia

This is a very rare duck both in Cyprus and worldwide, with a somewhat unusual appearance and a small body.

The White-headed Duck has become one of the rarest bird species in the world, with a global population not exceeding 15,000 individuals.

The most recent record in Cyprus was of three birds observed at Oroklini Lake on 16 December 2015. They remained there for one week. The species does not breed in Cyprus.

Several additional duck species have been recorded in Cyprus, but they are extremely rare.
