Tulipa cypria (Κορμακίτης)

Christodoulou, R. Hand & C. Charalambous

3 Tulipa agenensis Redouté

Tulipa cypria (Κορμακίτης)

Christodoulou, R. Hand & C. Charalambous.

The very rare Tulip Tulipa akamasica

Ίδη το φυτό συμπεριλαμβάνετε στην IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

The very rare Tulip Tulipa akamasica

Tulipa agenensis

How Many Species of Tulips Do We Have, When Do They Bloom and Where Are They Found?

GEORGE KONSTANTINOU, 14/2/2019

Text and photographs by George Konstantinou

The flora of Cyprus today includes approximately 1,920 different plant species, and this number also includes all the native and introduced plants of Cyprus, but not cultivated plants. A very special part of these plants is represented by the beautiful tulips of Cyprus.

Tulips belong to the order Liliales and the family Liliaceae. Throughout the world, we encounter more than 90 different species of tulips belonging to the genus Tulipa. Tulips are perennial, herbaceous, angiosperm, monocotyledonous plants found in regions of Europe and western and central Asia.

Tulips are bulbous plants, and their bulb is ovoid and covered by various brown membranous tunics. They reproduce through these bulbs, which produce underground rhizomes, and these rhizomes in turn produce new bulbs, thus allowing entire colonies to be formed. They also reproduce by seeds.

The main colours of tulips are yellow and red, but white, purple and pink flowers can also be found. The fruit of the tulip is called a capsule and is triangular in shape, containing a great number of small seeds.

Large organised cultivations of the plant are found in the Netherlands, covering enormous areas, which is why the Netherlands is also called the “country of the tulip”. Nevertheless, we have tourists from the Netherlands who visit Cyprus to see the beautiful Cypriot tulips.

In Cyprus, we encounter three different species of tulips, all of which are red in colour, and all are included in the Red Data Book of the Flora of Cyprus, which contains the plants of Cyprus that are threatened with extinction.

The three species of tulips found in our country are:

  1. Cyprus Tulip – Tulipa cypria Stapf
  2. Akamas Tulip – Tulipa akamasica C.S. Christodoulou, R. Hand & C. Charalambous
  3. Tulipa agenensis Redouté

Tulipa cypria

Tulipa cypria is an endemic and rare species of Cyprus. An endemic species of Cyprus means that it is found only in Cyprus and nowhere else on the planet.

The plant reaches a maximum height of 30 to 40 cm and has petals of an intense deep-red colour. The flowering period of this tulip is mainly during the months of March and April.

It is found in Akamas, Kormakitis, Myrtou, Diorios, Panagra, Agios Symeon in Karpasia and at Mammari, in a small location within the Buffer Zone.

Unfortunately, it usually grows in cultivated cereal fields, which are harvested before the tulips have completed their fruiting process, with the result that they are unable to reproduce.

Tulipa akamasica

Tulipa akamasica is an extremely rare plant which for many years had not been classified as to its species and was known as Tulipa ssp. Only recently, in 2014, was it named Tulipa akamasica, and it now belongs to the endemic plants of Cyprus. The preliminary work that led to this conclusion was carried out by C.S. Christodoulou, R. Hand & C. Charalambous.

The Akamas Tulip was discovered in 1991 by Christos Charalambous, but it was not registered as a new species because, based on initial studies, the plant was considered to belong to an already known species.

The plant reaches a maximum height of 30 cm and has petals of an intense red colour. The flowering period of the Akamas Tulip is mainly during March and April.

This tulip is a plant that is critically threatened with extinction, as it is found only in one very small area of Akamas, at an altitude of 370 metres, with a population of only approximately two hundred plants. The plant is already included in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

The Department of Forests has fenced off the area where the plants are found in order to protect them from uncontrolled grazing. However, because of the remoteness of the area, these few plants, which are extremely rare worldwide, are at the mercy of anyone wishing to uproot bulbs for commercial purposes.

I have already found many websites on the internet selling rare endemic species of Cyprus, such as snails, insects, seeds and plant bulbs, without any obstacle.

Tulipa agenensis

Apart from Cyprus, Tulipa agenensis is also found on islands of the Aegean, in Turkey, Syria, Israel, Iran, Lebanon, Jordan and Palestine.

The plant reaches a maximum height of 30 to 40 cm and has petals of an intense red colour. The flowering period of this tulip is mainly during March and April.

In Cyprus, it is found at Polemi, Stroumpi, Fyti and in a small area at Kyperounta, which I discovered in 2011 together with my wife, Fani.

An announcement by the Department of Forests at the time stated:

On Tuesday, 3 May 2011, Forestry Officers, guided by the couple of nature lovers and researchers of Cypriot nature, Mr George and Mrs Fani Konstantinou, located a new population of the rare Polemi Tulip (Tulipa agenensis) at the higher altitudes of the Pitsilia region (1,200 m).

The tulip was still in flower, one month later than its normal flowering period at Polemi, because of the altitude.

As a rare plant with a continuously declining population, it is classified as Vulnerable in the Red Data Book of the Flora of Cyprus, according to the internationally accepted IUCN criteria.

The new location in a community of Pitsilia, the name of which is not disclosed for obvious reasons, includes more than 200 plants growing in the same habitat as at Polemi and Stroumpi, namely in vineyards and along vineyard banks.

According to the testimony of the elderly owner of the vineyard, the tulip had existed there for as long as she could remember and therefore represents an old subpopulation.

The tulip is a plant that occurs in agricultural cultivations and benefits from good agricultural practices, but it may be threatened by the use of herbicides, overcollection, residential development and the abandonment of the countryside.

Officers of the Department of Forests transplanted a number of tulip bulbs to the Troodos Botanical Garden, located at the boundary of the Amiantos Mine. They also contacted the Community Council and agreed on ways to protect the plant in situ.

In general, tulips are threatened by habitat destruction, drought, overgrazing and by people who very often uproot the bulbs in order to plant them in their gardens or with the intention of selling them. They are also threatened by people cutting the flowers to decorate their vases or for sale to florists, thereby preventing the plants from producing fruit, which is essential for their reproduction.

Many times I have seen countless holes in the ground caused by the removal of bulbs. I have also seen people at Polemi many times carrying hundreds of cut tulips in their arms, and because of the quantity, they certainly intended to sell them.

It is unbelievable that many so-called nature lovers visit the areas where the tulips grow, supposedly to admire them, but because of carelessness and indifference they trample them mercilessly, something which unfortunately I have witnessed many times.

All three species of tulips found in Cyprus are protected by strict legislation, but unfortunately I have never heard of anyone being reported or convicted for the offences mentioned above.
