Σύγχρονες πληροφορίες για την παρατήρηση πουλιών στο Ακρωτήρι αναφέρουν για το Bishop’s Pool είδη όπως Ferruginous Duck (Aythya nyroca), Little Bittern (Ixobrychus minutus), Red-footed Falcon (Falco vespertinus), Little Egret (Egretta garzetta) και Moustached Warbler (Acrocephalus melanopogon).

Επίσης καταγράφονται στην περιοχή είδη όπως Mallard, Grey Heron, Purple Heron, Northern Shoveler, Little Grebe, Spur-winged Lapwing και διάφορα παρυδάτια πουλιά.

Bishop’s Pool at Akrotiri, Limassol – An Important Artificial Wetland of Cyprus

Text: George Konstantinou

Bishop’s Pool, known in Greek as Despotiki Limni, is a small artificial wetland situated on the Akrotiri Peninsula in the Limassol District of Cyprus. Although it was created for human purposes, over time it developed into an important habitat for birds and other wildlife.

The pool lies within the Agios Nikolaos Farm, approximately 2.85 kilometres east of the centre of Akrotiri village. The surrounding landscape consists mainly of agricultural land, plantations and other habitats associated with the wider Akrotiri wetland complex.

Creation of Bishop’s Pool

Bishop’s Pool is not a natural lake. It was created in 1960, initially as a reservoir for the irrigation of surrounding agricultural land.

It was later also used in connection with the artificial recharge of the Akrotiri aquifer, and by around 1998 it had acquired approximately the form known today.

Its history is therefore closely linked both to agriculture and to water management in the Akrotiri area.

The Akrotiri Aquifer

The Akrotiri Peninsula contains an important coastal aquifer that has long been used as a source of groundwater.

Changes in the natural flow of water within the wider catchment, particularly following the construction of major water infrastructure such as the Kouris Dam, affected natural groundwater recharge.

Artificial recharge measures were therefore developed to supplement the water entering the aquifer. Bishop’s Pool became one of the off-stream ponds associated with this system, with water supplied through pipelines.

From Reservoir to Wildlife Habitat

The creation of a permanent or semi-permanent body of water allowed wetland and riparian vegetation to develop around the pool.

This gradually produced suitable conditions for aquatic organisms and particularly for birds.

Today, BirdLife Cyprus describes Bishop’s Pool as an artificial but important wetland and a key refuge for birds within the Akrotiri Peninsula.

Birdlife

Bishop’s Pool is particularly valuable for waterbirds, herons, wetland species and migratory birds.

Earlier ornithological records for the site listed approximately 50 bird species at the pool itself, including breeding and migratory species. The wider surrounding area has supported a much larger diversity, reflecting the exceptional ornithological importance of the Akrotiri Peninsula as a whole.

Cyprus lies on major migration routes between Europe, Asia and Africa, and Akrotiri provides a variety of habitats where migrating birds can rest and feed during their journeys.

Characteristic Species

Birds associated with Bishop’s Pool include the Ferruginous Duck (Aythya nyroca), Little Bittern (Ixobrychus minutus), Little Egret (Egretta garzetta), Moustached Warbler (Acrocephalus melanopogon), Red-footed Falcon (Falco vespertinus) and Eleonora’s Falcon (Falco eleonorae).

Herons and birds of prey may roost in the surrounding groves during migration, while warblers and other small birds feed among the trees, shrubs and fields.

The Surrounding Farmland

An important feature of Bishop’s Pool is its close relationship with the surrounding agricultural landscape.

The fertile fields and citrus groves provide feeding and resting habitat for migratory birds. BirdLife Cyprus particularly highlights the importance of this landscape for the Red-footed Falcon, which uses the area for hunting and resting during migration.

This demonstrates that the ecological value of Bishop’s Pool extends beyond the water and wetland vegetation to the traditional agricultural habitats around it.

Part of the Akrotiri Wetland Complex

Bishop’s Pool forms part of the much larger natural mosaic of the Akrotiri Peninsula, one of the most important areas for biodiversity in Cyprus.

The peninsula contains Akrotiri Salt Lake, Akrotiri Marsh, Zakaki Marsh, saline pools, reedbeds, sand dunes, coastal habitats, scrubland and agricultural areas.

Together, these different environments provide feeding, breeding and resting sites for a remarkable variety of wildlife.

Importance during Migration

Spring and autumn are especially important periods at Akrotiri because large numbers of migratory birds pass through Cyprus.

A relatively small wetland can be extremely valuable during migration because birds arriving after long flights need places where they can rest, feed and regain energy.

Bishop’s Pool contributes to a network of suitable habitats across the peninsula rather than functioning as an isolated wetland.

Water Quality and Wetland Management

Maintaining suitable water conditions is important for the ecological health of an artificial wetland.

An example of this occurred in 2017, when a number of wild birds were found dead at Bishop’s Pool. BirdLife Cyprus reported that the likely cause was botulism, associated with low oxygen levels and eutrophication. Changes in the quantity or quality of water entering the pool were considered a possible contributing factor.

The incident demonstrated how strongly the wildlife of a small artificial wetland can depend on appropriate water management.

Archaeological Interest

The surroundings of Bishop’s Pool are also of archaeological interest.

Near the wetland are the remains of an Archaic sanctuary at the locality known as “Anthropos”. The presence of archaeological remains adds a cultural and historical dimension to an area already notable for its natural and agricultural heritage.

The wider Akrotiri Peninsula contains numerous archaeological and cultural sites, reflecting a long history of human presence in the area.

Access to Bishop’s Pool

Bishop’s Pool lies within fenced private land that is part of a working farm, and public access to the pool itself may not always be possible.

Visitors should therefore respect gates, private property and any access restrictions. Official visitor information specifically notes that, when entrance is possible, the main gate must not be left open.

Birds can also be observed from suitable locations around the wider area without disturbing the wetland.

Conservation Importance

The significance of Bishop’s Pool comes from the combination of several elements: open water, wetland vegetation, surrounding trees and productive agricultural land.

Its relatively small size does not diminish its value. Within the much larger Akrotiri ecosystem, it provides an additional freshwater habitat that can be used by species with different ecological requirements.

Protecting the pool therefore involves not only maintaining the wetland itself but also preserving the quality of the surrounding landscape and avoiding unnecessary disturbance.
